This is a report on the current Frankfurt Auto Show... this page shows
the new VW concept car that they want to use to compete against BMW and
Mercedes. Note the comment about how they will achieve success, not by
the engineers, but rather the marketing guys.

Thank you to Todd V, Russ,John W, Sue and others who helped me with
suggested routes through Colorado. It was a great trip. Took the I-70
route to Gleenwood Springs and then down through Redstone. Stopped in
Ridgeway. Nice little town and a beautiful drive from there. Took over 8
hours in good weather with a few breaks to help support the Philiip Morris
Company. Would like to take southern route next time when we don't have to
catch a plane out of Denver.

I did with the driver's side window. Oddly enough it went away of its own
accord. The shop told me these things are self-adjusting in some way and it
has to do with the mechanism designed to sense if someone's hand is in the
way, upon which it quickly reverses and goes down again. I found while I had
the problem I could work around it by tapping the control to stop the
window's movement just before it reached the top, then get it up the rest of
the way by tapping on the control a little at a time.

I just put on a set of Agilis 51s and am having VW do a 4 wheel alignment.
Has anyone had this done? any problems or benefits from having it done. It's
pretty pricey too at $148.

Bill, we have 68,000 + on our 93GL. as we speak(read?) it is at my VW dealer
to have the belts changed. Dealer said they were worn so II'm not taking any
chances.

Throw in just some random colored wire that could either be a second negtive
or second postive (no explaination of course) and THEN you have German
wiring. You know the old saying about German cars: If it takes four bolts to
hold it on, they'll put on five.

Funny...that's one of the problems I had with mine that Lodgemobile fixed.
I wonder how many Norcold units out there have loose thermocouplers.
Ever since they fixed mine - it's been perfect - it lights right up and runs
cold at all elevations.
Labor Day weekend I was on four day camping trip up at Seqouia and the
Shaver Lake area...
Camped at 7-8,000 feet with no Norcold problems!
Did you get yours back yet?

Personal Duty #1 solution:

I find a plastic peanut butter jar works great for middle of the night
bladder calls. Doesn't take much space and is easily rinsed out. I
replace it each time I empty a jar of peanut butter.

I have had similar success with a quart cylindrical glass container made

for

salad dressing. Fortunately no glass breakage yet, and if one is careful,
the metal cover will not get rusty.

Just a quick update....I did another search through the NHTSA/DOT website
and found one possibly two more EV engine fires. Originally I had looked
under the catagory entitled "FUEL: FUEL LINES:HOSES:NON-METALLIC". Just for
the heck of it I cruised through the other catagories and under "ENGINE" I
found two more entries one occuring on August 4, 1994 (I believe that this
is a duplicate of the engine fire found in the FUEL LINES catagory), the
other occuring on January 4, 1996.

As more info becomes available I will post.

Mine gave out at about 130,000 miles.? The service tech said they're typically good for 75,000 to 100,000 miles.? I got a lot of life out of mine, although if it breaks, your van requires a tow.? Plus, there is a chance of some valve damage.? Mine was OK, but there have been some others who have reported engine damage.? If I were you, I'd assume the previous owner didn't want to fork over the $450-$500 the VW shop charges to replace the belt.??? My opinion only, but this is a good job for a neighborhood garage with European car experience.? Might save you a few bucks.

The odd thing for me is that I specifically asked the service advisor about the belt at the 60k, 90k and 120k maintenance intervals.? They checked the belt each time and said it looked OK.? It's not part of the scheduled maintenance, just "inspect and replace as needed".

I'm not going to wait for a possible recall, although I really appreciate all the effort Ric has put in to date.? I've replaced most of the weak VW clamps with solid, screw-type clamps.? However, I need to replace old fuel line hose as well.? Two quick questions for those of you who have already done this procedure.? First, what size fuel line did you use?? The local VW shop doesn't have a clue.? I'm guessing 5/16 inside diameter is close to the metric size.? Second, the clamp on the blue plastic line was so loose, I just pulled it off, hose and clamp.? The clamp on the black line is still pretty tight.? How did you get the clamp off without breaking the plastic line?

The reverse connections you describe should have led to a gazillion amp
current flow from the 24 VDC source through the nearly zero resistance,
limited by the "fusing" capability of the wiper ground wire. I would expect
this wire to have vaporized instantaneously. On the other hand, had you
connected the jumper cable to the engine block as reccommended, one or both
batteries most probably would have overheated and exploded, spraying battery
acid among other things. This is why safety glasses are reccommended when
jumping a car battery.

Is this wire a ground return for the wiper motor, or is it a ground
connection for the otherwise isolated motor frame? The latter case would be
for electrical noise suppression, so if it is broken the wipers may still
function but you may hear noise on the radio, especially on weak AM stations.

I continue to be intreagued by the fact that you still use the term "No
worries..." in your signature.

I have 98k miles on my '93 GL...bought it used from a dealer...I don't
know if the timing belt had ever been changed...probably not.

Assumimng you had the misfortune of having one break, at what mileage
did it happen?

I've got 156,000 miles on mine.? Original motor, original owner.? Driven everyday to work.? Does double duty as the Soccer Shuttle on weekends.

I've religiously changed oil/filter every 7,500.? I stick to the scheduled maintenance theory every 30,000 miles.? No major engine troubles other than a broken timing belt, which as we all know, is NOT mentioned in the maintenance schedule.? Components and accessories have started to show their age.? Transmission (auto) is beginning to shift abruptly from second to third and third to fourth.? May be the torque converter or modulator.? Replaced two bad CV boots on Monday.? Needed a quick weld the other day when the bracket that joins the downpipe and the cat gave out.

I'm hoping for 250,000 to 300,000 miles before parting company.? I hate car payments.

I posted some bad information recently about the California camper sold at VW
dealers in Germany. I'm going to Germany next week and Reimo arranged for a
camper while I'm there. I misunderstood and though this was a Reimo
conversion.

I now find out that it is a Westfalia. Reimo did not have any of their demo
campers available, so they are getting us a Westfalia. Must be like Ford
executive arranging a Chevy rental car for their business associates.

I wonder if VW uses the name California, since my Reimo catalog shows
California conversions in it. I may know more when I return.

I'm planning on taking lots of pictures.

My wife and I are off to Germany this Sunday, so I will be signing off the
list in a day or two until I return in a few weeks.

I will not be able to process any orders while I am gone. We will be
shutting down the business until we return. Any orders that come in before
Saturday will be shipped before we leave. Otherwise we can ship the week of
10/4.

I have 292,000 km on my 92 EV; engine has 250,000 km.
Original engine was replaced under warranty by VW in '94.
The only major item has been replacement of timing belt and rebuilt clutch.
These Audi engines do last a while.
My '86 Audi 4000 had over 320,000 km.

I have 101k on my 95 EVC> According to an Audi mechanic I talked to they
will run 300k easily. He said that it is easy to find used Audi 5 cylinder
engines because they outlast the auto body.
