Wiper Blade Replacements

pop top rattle
<When traveling on rough roads (paved or otherwise) my '97 Eurovan
pop-top makes a lot of noise as if it wasn't locked down.> Kent, yes it could be your bed platform. Also, there are L shaped hooks, you've no doubt seen, that hang down from the roof to engage the latches. The hooks are adjustable by loosening a nut on each one just under the roof. These can get loose and cause a rattling noise. Cheers, jc |

Ticking Noise with 2000 EV (vacuum?)
My 2000 EV has about 2500 miles on it. It has made a noise since day
one. It is a faint ticking noise that you can hear inside the car but not out in the engine area. More noticable when under a load but you can hear it at idle. It almost sounds like a tach cable or vacuum ticking noise. It isn't in the engine. Anyone have a similar noise. I'm going to drive another new EV to compare the sounds. Maybe it is the power steering. Now that the weather has turned colder (less than 40 deg F in the moring. There is a noise when making tight turns. My wife always drives it so I don't hear it as much. Could be a tight power steering system. Any thoughts? I do all of my own work and really don't want to take it to the dealer (yet). Jeff |

Re: Ticking Noise with 2000 EV (vacuum?)
I have this ticking noise on my 99 Weekender. We also have the same ticking
noise on our 99 New Beetle. On the New Beetle Email List there was a discussion a while back in which many said it was the fuel injection. Don't know if this is right or wrong, just passing on an idea. Rolland Brower 99 Weekender |
Re: Exhaust Systems
In addition to the safety inspection aspect, if you're concerned that
the exhaust system would be close enough to the wheel to heat the brake, I'd also worry about what that heat could do to the tire -- and not just while you're driving, but especially when you stop. With no moving air to help dissipate the heat, a hot exhaust system could radiate heat for a long time after you shut the engine off and cause damage while you're parked. I learned about this the hard way. I didn't lose a tire, but on my vacation this summer I melted some stuff I was hauling on a hitch-mounted cargo carrier. I didn't take into account how much heat is really generated by the exhaust, how far it would radiate, and for how long. Thank God the stuff wasn't particularly valuable or combustible. Some things within 2 feet of the tail pipe didn't fare well, nor did my self-esteem when I was "grilled" mercilessly by nearly everyone who found out about this little episode. The hitch is worth about $200 new if it's made by Delan! I'd get it!

From: LTVess@... [mailto:LTVess@...] Sent: Thursday, November 18, 1999 10:21 PM To: ev_update@... Subject: [ev_update] Fun at the junkyard. Went to the local wrecking yard yesterday to prey on a burned out 93 EV GL. I went for the 2" trailer hitch ($20), but couldn't get it off as the rim on which the van was resting was situated right on one of the bolts. Unfortunately, the van was scheduled to be crushed today as the only parts left on it after the fire were the rear bumper and side caps (maroon), rear hatch and taillights. I'm going to go back tomorrow and if it didn't get crushed as scheduled I will get the rear hydraulic struts ($5 each). Don't know if dragging a hoist out there is worth it for the hitch. I took the driver's side taillight to replace a broken one on mine. Tried to get to the passenger side one, but the rear A/C unit had melted into the access area. $10 for the unit which is in perfect shape. Also got a FUBA roof-mounted antenna off a wrecked Passat. Took out the factory antenna on my 93 EV and put the new one in its place. Looks slick; like the Cabrios. It was easy to install, too. It fits right in the drain hole and has the same profile as the windshield. The old antenna hole now serves as the drain hole. The FUBA blends in with the van much better than the metal one. $3. I would have liked to have mounted it on the roof, but it would not have cleared the garage door. Wired right up with no problems. Happy EVing Todd 93 EV GL 90 Passat Gotta love the junkyard. A tip for all you Europhiles out there. Anyone looking for European Side Blinker lights: The front marker lights on the early Audi 5000s are exactly the same as the small ones used on most A2 VWs in Europe. Just install a higher-wattage blinker bulb, remove the emblem from the car, snap in and wire up. $1 each. And, there are a lot of wrecked Audis out there. . . Also, had my front brake calipers painted bright red. Looks cool. They now match the "SCCA" colored tow hooks. One other thing: The only other completely burned-out car in the foreign section was a 99 New Beetle. It must have been in a HOT garage fire because it was burned uniformly and everything but the unibody, engine and doors melted. There was roof and hood damage from what looked like trusses falling on the car. The funny thing is the rear of the car is labeled "FRONT." They do kinda look the same from either direction, don't they. For the twisted folks like me out there, I took some digital photos of both the EV and the Beetle and can E-mail them to you if you like. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Looking for the latest consumer electronic gadgets or computer equipment? eBay has thousands of audio equipment, computer games & accessories. -- Who has the best tool box to fit on either side of the rear seatI use stuff sacks to store tools. They fit anywhere and don't rattle about. They come color coded so I know what's in there. We use stuff sacks in the lockers, also..especially good for clothes that don't need pressing. They stack in that closet and fill it right to the top without falling out when you open the sliding door!! Gary from Maine |
Re: Tool Boxes for under rear seat
I have a 4 drawer plastic tool box from Sears which fits perfectly
under the rear shelf in my MV. I don't have a stock number, but here's the description... its black with red drawers. Three of the drawers are for sockets and ratchets, etc. (1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive) the other drawer is a large drawer for misc. tools. I think it cost me about $40 for the box.
