weather, reaching around the tranny with my son above looking down and giving advice and helping where he could. That was miserable. Next two times I did it from the top, moving radiator forward and taking off the battery cover and side piece (and maybe something else?) to get better access. There is a bracket that bolts on that has the nylon bushing pressed into it. You can get it off and on from the top, and if you are going to replace that bushing I recommend you take the bracket off to do so. You can also take off the last section of linkage from the gear shift lever to the tranny that has the nylon balls on it, but that has to be done from underneath. I did that the first time to be able to press the ball onto the shaft, and then the ball and shaft into the bushing. However, I was able to use lubricant and channel-lock pliers to press fit the assembly together from the top without taking the shaft off last two times I worked on it, and suggest you attempt the same. A little bit of yelling, adrenaline, and persistance and you can get it. On 6/17/08, dalemisen <dalem@...> wrote:

This is one of those cases where I would much rather roll in without drawing attention, be *very* descrete and respectful, and just stealth camp in the back corner after buying some Wal-Mart provisions. I make sure that I have my plastic Wal-Mart bags there in plain view if/when the security guard comes knocking. It's easier to ask forgiveness later if asked to leave... and that hasn't happened yet (for me). If I already see a half-dozen campers in one corner, I feel fine about popping the top. If I don't see any campers, I suspect (for me) it's best to leave a sleeping dog alone and just go hide in a corner next to three other cars somewhere, leave the top down, lights off, shades down, and scram after about five or six hours of much-needed shut-eye. (I forget which Wal-Mart it was (perhaps Flagstaff), but I was amazed to see about 25 or 30 campers when I pulled in... and some were BIG rigs!) Re: More Questions on Generators
Hi Ken,
Thanks for chiming in... please scroll down to the ###'s below kgkirkley: I checked the site and can't find a price for the eu2000 anywhere.### Well, exactly! I wrote them asking for a quote. Have not heard back. And there are a half-dozen dealers listed for Austin, Texas... so, I will see where the lay of the land is before committing to any dealer, mail-order OR local. As I've mentioned before, I made a heavy canvas 'shroud' thatvelcros around the a/c unit and zips into the front window in place of thescreen. ### Actually, this is elegant and quite brilliant. Can you please post some photos to the group? (I've missed seeing you at the Texas Star Parties.) I especially like that this arrangement would be easier than trying to balance the unit on the door sill, potentially buggering up the cloth or plastic-coated handles... and exposing the interior to possible condensate drippage. There might be room for the generator and a/c up in the luggagecarrier. ### Yes, BUT there is always the hazard of the A/C unit sucking carbon monoxide and other foul exhaust fumes into the living quarters. I would have to have a machine shop modify the exhaust pipe to include a nipple and hose arrangement to escort the exhaust fumes to the rear of the van... and add three new CO detectors for the interior! There's always a complication! The problem would be lifting weight.time. ### Yes, and there's the question of storage... and of course, this kills any "stealth camping" ideas. It would probably be acceptable at Wal-Mart to have this A/C and generator arrangement in the cubby- hole on the roof and the top popped up. My only concern with this pop-up arrangement is that the canvas all around is a HUGE heat loss, especially during the day when the sun is beating on the EVC. I would imagine that going through the side window with an A/C unit would be much better during the hot days. So, having flexibility to choose is probably the right answer. I am still of the mind to take a good A/C unit apart and install the thing permanently in the bottom of the closet. Someone else had this professionally done, but as I recall, it was about $4,000 when it was all finished. It's a major job. I've been thinking about reworking the battery box area and expanding into the rear middle storage area, perhaps making a sound-proof (?) box for a portable generator there. It would be a massive project, but not a bad addition for the EVC. I now carry the a/c inside the EVC andimproving my mpg. ### Yes, it is so good of Winnebago to have thought of the velcro on the front screen like that. I wouldn't want to have to hoist the A/C unit up from the side. Going through the interior is so much easier. Will have to see how all this works at our Texas Star Parties coming up. With so many days touching and into the 100's, it is pretty miserable without some A/C relief. Best, Garrett 1999 EVC, "DolphinJazz" 2002 EVC, "Serenity" |

No matter which Wal-Marts are on the OKAY list it is still advisable to check with the manager first.

Re: More Questions on Generators
Garrett:
Hi Group,I checked the site and can't find a price for the eu2000 anywhere. Does one have to call them to obtain a price? Also, are you at liberty to say what the super duper price was? Do you want to sleep in the top bunk with the top popped? If you do, I will tell you that keeping cool up there with the a/c in the passenger window isn't easy. As you know , cold air is heavy and falls and it won't go up thru the small opening very well, even with a fan blowing up. If you do I would suggest placing the 'window a/c' unit in the center of the luggage carrier, facing rearwards. I've done this for years in our hot Texas summers. As I've mentioned before, I made a heavy canvas 'shroud' that velcros around the a/c unit and zips into the front window in place of the screen. In operation, with the upper bed stowed, the air bounces off the angled pop top and down into the interior. With the upper bed in use its very cool up there. I also use two 12v Walmart clip on fans to keep the air moving. There might be room for the generator and a/c up in the luggage carrier. The problem would be lifting weight. A 5000btu a/c weights about 40 lbs., the eu2000i 46 lbs. You'll have to lift them both up to the luggage carrier, one at a time. I used to keep my a/c mounted in the luggage carrier during the hot months and remove it when it cools down. I now carry the a/c inside the EVC and 'install' it when camping up through the front poptop window, thus improving my mpg. Kent Kirkley '97EVC **** Gas prices getting you down? Wal-Mart Question
Hi Group,
I have not seen in print anywhere the Wal-Marts that are OFF LIMITS for overnight parking. I have heard on various forums that local statutes prohibit camping within city limits, etc., etc., so those Wal-Marts are not available. I think El Paso is one of those cities, no? Is there a list anywhere of these "off limits" Wal-Marts? Also, are all Sam's Clubs available too? In fact, I have never seen it anywhere written or published that Wal- Marts are available for parking over night... it's just always been word of mouth. What's up with that? Best, Garrett |
More Questions on Generators
Hi Group,
Thanks to Jack_son and Joe R for their replies to my last generator inquiry. As a result, I have committed to buying the Honda EU2000i I can imagine that it is rather stupid to run the generator near enough to the EVC that exhaust fumes could enter the living space somehow. And, it will be incredibly attractive concept to set the thing on top of the EVC in the little baggage cubby-hole up front. I'm wondering if there is a way? The whole idea is to install a window A/C unit in the passenger window and run an AC-current line directly from the generator to the A/C unit. When parking at Wal-Marts, for example, I can imagine that they would be a touch sensitive about my setting a generator 15-feet away from the EVC and running an AC line to the window unit. That would be pushing things a bit, no? But, to have the generator on the roof and a descreet AC cord running to the window... well, who would notice? Am wondering if an exhaust hose can be fabricated by a buddy who owns a machine shop? (And route that hose to the rear of the van) And, maybe things wouldn't be *that* unsafe if I installed three or four different CO detectors inside the EVC? Any thoughts? Thanks to all! Re: Advice on generator and A/C operation
Many thanks to Joe R and to Jack_son for their thoughtful replies!
Follow up questions: 1) As per Joe's post, how difficult is it to install a second "soft start" capacitor to a typical 6000 BTU Window A/C unit?? As I recall, capacitors have three wires... so, you've already LOST me! ;) 2) I sent off to Mayberrys.com (as per Jack_Son's recommendation) for a quote on the Honda EU2000i generator. Wondering if anyone knows of any other outfits that will mail-order a Honda ultra cheap? Best, Garrett 1999 EVC, "DolphinJazz" 2002 EVC, "Serenity" "Joe R" wrote: What your describing is a "soft start" kit and it is a secondcapacitor because AC's already have one as you stated. Re: Random Lock and Unlock on 2002 EVC

I have also had a similar problem on my '95 when the lock button on the sliding door gets slightly out of position on the shaft and, in it's downward travel, it?becomes?stopped before the button can rest in the?full down &?locked position.? This causes the locks to acutate and, until?finally the?sliding door lock button finds a place to?locked--usually resulting in a stuck door.? I have solved this (knock on wood) by loosening the lock button so that the plastic button rides higher on the shaft.??It has been more than a month and so far so good.
