Thanks Stephen - I was just under there and everything is just swimming around, so the
anchor points those ball bushings would provide does sound like the likely problem. Do
you recall accessing them from directly under, or twisting arms around from the wheel-
well area? I can't see a thing up under (over) there thus far!

Sounds more like something came loose and not a bushing. It's really a
matter of getting under the van and looking at the shifter rods and levers
and seeing if something looks disconnected.
