Re: 93 mv weekender auxiliary battery help for newbie

Hi Robert,

I don't have the van handy to take a look, but the only round hole I
remember under my table is the socket for the "leg" that sticks down
from the bottom of the table. It holds the table in place when
folded... no electricals.

As for the socket under the driver's seat, there may be a fuse, I
don't remember. It is wired to the battery under the seat. The best
thing is to slide your seat forward and take a look. A previous owner
may have made some changes. I think my socket was disconnected -
anyway it is now because I don't have the under-seat fridge.

as for the outlet under the table, the same plug for the cooler
doesn't fit in this and i have no
idea what would. it is a penny size round hole and the manual says
nothing about it other
than where it is located and all my google searchs have turned up empty.

new battery, just wouldnt turn over

That's the BIG clue, right there. If your battery went dead and you
put in a new battery... and, subsequently you did get the engine
started, but are lamenting that you have a rough engine... and then
spend all kinds of money at a dealership. Slow down a second!!

Did you perform a throttle body adaption after your battery install?

If you didn't, you very well could have a very rough engine.

But, you can fix it yourself (if that's the problem) without much
fuss and certainly no expense. Just do the throttle body procedure
and see if that doesn't clear up the rough engine.

Re: coil and other codes, 99 euro running rough and wont start sometimes.

Hi Todd,

If the starter doesn't go when you turn the key, that's most likely a
totally different problem than if the starter goes but the motor
doesn't start.

"No starter" is usually a relatively simple thing to figure out...
- not in Park or Neutral (I have seen this more times than you'd think!)
- weak battery (try a boost start?)
- poor (dirty) battery connections
- poor connections in small wire to solenoid
- bad ignition switch
- bad neutral safety switch (try starting in Neutral)
- bad starter or starter solenoid

Turn the headlights on... they should be turned off automatically when
you turn the key to start. If not, that suggests something in the key
switch or related wiring.

I have sometimes connected 12v from the battery to the small wire on
the starter solenoid. If it cranks, starter is OK, problem is
somewhere in the circuit from the battery to the key to the starter
solenoid.

Can't comment on the CEL and coil... I have the old 5 cyl motor which
is very different.

Thanks for the advice. But I'll bet I can build one for about $100
using parts found at a marine supply & home depot. No welding need be
involved, just good strong stainless steel brackets. I'm just trying
to find someone here that might have done it successfully & cost-
effectively. And I'm unemployed & trying to start up a new business,
so that "$300" of my savings account needs to find it's way into my
stomach! ;)

Billy:

Unless you 'absolutely' have to have a roof rack.......I would suggest no
going that route.
The roof rack and whatever you mount there will impact your gas mileage at
least 2-4 mpg.

I have removed my Yakima Tracks towers and just put everything inside.
An alternative would be a rear hitch mounted carrier......no drag.

I see your point as well. While it never happened in a Wal-Mart lot, I have been chased from
other spots. Nothing worse than being woken from a deep sleep in the middle of the night
and told to move on.

Re: [93eurovans] 93 manual trans shifter bushings (?)

First time I did the repair lying on the garage floor in freezing
weather, reaching around the tranny with my son above looking down and
giving advice and helping where he could. That was miserable. Next two
times I did it from the top, moving radiator forward and taking off
the battery cover and side piece (and maybe something else?) to get
better access.

There is a bracket that bolts on that has the nylon bushing pressed
into it. You can get it off and on from the top, and if you are going
to replace that bushing I recommend you take the bracket off to do so.

You can also take off the last section of linkage from the gear shift
lever to the tranny that has the nylon balls on it, but that has to be
done from underneath. I did that the first time to be able to press
the ball onto the shaft, and then the ball and shaft into the bushing.
However, I was able to use lubricant and channel-lock pliers to press
fit the assembly together from the top without taking the shaft off
last two times I worked on it, and suggest you attempt the same. A
little bit of yelling, adrenaline, and persistance and you can get it.

On 6/17/08, dalemisen <dalem@...> wrote:

Thanks again,

IIRC there are two nylon balls and a nylon bushing in the linkage on

think Steve at Europarts sells a kit with all the pieces and
recommends replacing them all at once.

Replacing the components is not technically difficult, but access is a
bit of a pain and it can take some perseverance.

Sounds more like something came loose and not a bushing. It's really a
matter of getting under the van and looking at the shifter rods and
levers
and seeing if something looks disconnected.

This is one of those cases where I would much rather roll in without
drawing attention, be *very* descrete and respectful, and just
stealth camp in the back corner after buying some Wal-Mart
provisions. I make sure that I have my plastic Wal-Mart bags there
in plain view if/when the security guard comes knocking.

It's easier to ask forgiveness later if asked to leave... and that

If I already see a half-dozen campers in one corner, I feel fine
about popping the top. If I don't see any campers, I suspect (for me)
it's best to leave a sleeping dog alone and just go hide in a corner
next to three other cars somewhere, leave the top down, lights off,
shades down, and scram after about five or six hours of much-needed
shut-eye.

(I forget which Wal-Mart it was (perhaps Flagstaff), but I was amazed
to see about 25 or 30 campers when I pulled in... and some were BIG
rigs!)

Just my TooSense on that one... but, I do see both points of view!

Hi Ken,

Thanks for chiming in... please scroll down to the ###'s below

###
Well, exactly! I wrote them asking for a quote. Have not heard
back. And there are a half-dozen dealers listed for Austin, Texas...
so, I will see where the lay of the land is before committing to any
dealer, mail-order OR local.

As I've mentioned before, I made a heavy canvas 'shroud' that
velcros
around the a/c unit and zips into the front window in place of the
screen.

###
Actually, this is elegant and quite brilliant. Can you please
post some photos to the group? (I've missed seeing you at the Texas
Star Parties.) I especially like that this arrangement would be
easier than trying to balance the unit on the door sill, potentially
buggering up the cloth or plastic-coated handles... and exposing the
interior to possible condensate drippage.

There might be room for the generator and a/c up in the luggage
carrier.

###
Yes, BUT there is always the hazard of the A/C unit sucking
carbon monoxide and other foul exhaust fumes into the living
quarters. I would have to have a machine shop modify the exhaust pipe
to include a nipple and hose arrangement to escort the exhaust fumes
to the rear of the van... and add three new CO detectors for the
interior! There's always a complication!

The problem would be lifting weight.
A 5000btu a/c weights about 40 lbs., the eu2000i 46 lbs.
You'll have to lift them both up to the luggage carrier, one at a
time.

###
Yes, and there's the question of storage... and of course, this
kills any "stealth camping" ideas. It would probably be acceptable
at Wal-Mart to have this A/C and generator arrangement in the cubby-
hole on the roof and the top popped up. My only concern with this
pop-up arrangement is that the canvas all around is a HUGE heat loss,
especially during the day when the sun is beating on the EVC. I
would imagine that going through the side window with an A/C unit
would be much better during the hot days. So, having flexibility to
choose is probably the right answer.

I am still of the mind to take a good A/C unit apart and install
the thing permanently in the bottom of the closet. Someone else had
this professionally done, but as I recall, it was about $4,000 when
it was all finished. It's a major job. I've been thinking about
reworking the battery box area and expanding into the rear middle
storage area, perhaps making a sound-proof (?) box for a portable
generator there. It would be a massive project, but not a bad
addition for the EVC.

I now carry the a/c inside the EVC and
'install' it when camping up through the front poptop window, thus
improving my mpg.

###
Yes, it is so good of Winnebago to have thought of the velcro on
the front screen like that. I wouldn't want to have to hoist the A/C
unit up from the side. Going through the interior is so much
easier. Will have to see how all this works at our Texas Star
Parties coming up. With so many days touching and into the 100's, it
is pretty miserable without some A/C relief.

I agree. Many stores don't want you there because others took advantage.

I have seen people in big RV's in Wal-Mart lots with awnings out, lawn chairs in position, and
BBQ grills set up. They look like they had been there for days or weeks! I'm sure this is not
what Wal-Mart had in mind when they were initially liberal in allowing over night parking,
but as is so often the case, some ruin it for many.

Add Las Vegas to the banned list. Went into effect sometime within the
last year as I found out first hand.

I've seen Wal-Mart camping cited in a number of publications, but I'm
thinking that maybe the first I heard of it was on some TV (perhaps
travel-related) show.

There is a website that tracks which ones do and don't allow camping:

grounds.com/ walmart_nocampin g.aspx

. com/walmartpark. htm

I've got the Free Campgrounds West book, and it has been reasonably useful.

The thing I need now is an update for TomTom Shared POI data with that info.
