Re: Whats the best exhaust system ?

We have the two mufflers and pipes that are associated with them made by a company called Ernst. This is a German company and the stuff I get from them is always top notch. Usually aluminized steel so that it will resist rusting better. Bosal and Ansa are not aluminized and rust pretty quickly here in the North East where I am located. I have an Ernst Muffler on my Vanagon and it is holding up really well. I can get the Catalytic convertor for $495 (this has the pipes attached to it and goes to the pipe right before the manifold. Then the middle muffler and pipes is $120 and the rear muffler and pipes would be $130. I can ship anywhere in the US and we usually ship that day. Of course we will be closed on Monday but I can ship these out on Tuesday if you are interested. Just give me a call at 856-327-6936 or check out our webstore at www.vanagain.com

Re: Cracked Exhaust Manifold-no part availability!

You should ask them first. If they can't get the part and you can they probably won't care. However if you show up with a box of parts
that you bought from someone else and then demand that they install them, they will probably tell you to take a hike.

Hope this helps,

Re: VAGCOM on Seattle's Craig's list--THIS IS NOT LEGIT!

Stuart MacMillan

Folks, this is a hacked & pirated system. Legitimate USB Vag-Com "dongles"
have internal coded chips that couple to the software when it is downloaded
to any computer from the Ross-Tech web site and plugged into the test
vehicle. There is no software "key" to install. This guy has hacked a
"key" for one version of the software, and it would most likely be an old
version. Buy at your own risk, knowing you are supporting an illegal
operator.

Better yet, forget it and buy a legitimate dongle from Ross-Tech (or a
private party selling a real one that doesn't need a "key" or software disk)
so they can stay in business.

This guy has been selling this on Craigslist since last year. His name

I met him, had him install it on my laptop and run a test on my 95 EVC
on the spot to make sure it worked. The engine test worked fine. I'm
glad he did the install for me because there were a couple of twists I
would have missed. I also bought the 2x2 cable from him which is needed
on the 95.

I have since tried to run it once and had issues, but he gave me his
number and I just haven't got around to calling him about it. Judging
from meeting him and his willingness to give me his number (which is
still the same), I expect he will walk me through my issue.

This is my experience for what it's worth.

Re: Fuel gauge

I had the usual suspects of guage issues and dash light issues on my
cluster last summer. I could reach behind the board and move the multi-
pin connector and things would start working. I replaced the VR and
soldered it directly to the board......still the same issues. I then
tested the old VR and found it to be fine.

So I went over the solder joints with a fine tooth comb using a
magifier and found several cracks. Some of the cracks were in the
connections to the multi-pin connector. It took a couple of passes and
testing until I got things right, but things have now worked great for
a year.

I'm not saying VR issues don't exist, but it clearly was not the
problem on my 95.

I phoned him right after the message came in, &
we talked for 25 mins. Then I saw your message.
He was at his 'day' job, & I think the email goes
to his auto sideline business.

He didn't say how long it was going to take to
obtain more. He said he didn't have the software
'key', but was sending a free copy.

I didn't mean to be speaking for him, but I was
sure more on this list would be interested, so I
asked about additional units. I just paid him via
PayPal, and he is shipping tomorrow.

I told him I'd gladly pass the word here when mine
arrives, + advise when he has more units to sell.

I attempted weeks ago to start a VagCom Group Buy
here, but it fell flat. Only one response, saying
it may not work.

In past 2 years I tried several times to get info
on VagComs, only to be more confused after. I
didn't mind paying, but I wanted to be sure I only
had to buy once, & be able to use for both VWs, &
with my notebook.

I feel he's legit. He has the best communication of
any of my ~40 on line purchases. Update next week.

Re: VAGCOM on Seattle's Craig's list

He is likely selling pirated software with a generic cable, or he has the older freeware version of Vagcom.

You should find out what version software he has. You may be paying too much. You may be able to find the cable on ebay. and a copy of the older software from a listmember.

You'll want to look at the connection of the voltage regulator as

BUT, the conclusion -- that there's "cold solder" on the circuit
board
-- is wrong, imo. Having repaired three different clusters, and
having

seen a fourth upgraded cluster where VW eliminated the
problematic
socket entirely, I'm convinced the problem is not "cold solder"
but
rather the problem is the socket itself: it's too loose fitting.

IOW, don't worry about the solder joints holding the socket to
the
circuit board as bamberg advises; they're fine. Instead, remove
the
VR

(remove one screw, then slide it out) and notice that the legs of
the
voltage regulator (VR) slide very easily out of the socket. You
will
notice there's barely any friction at all, and no friction means
unreliable connections.

Then, with the VR entirely removed, hold the VR firmly between
your
thumb and forefinger (your flesh makes a great heatsink, and I
guarantee
you will not overheat and damage the thing if you are squeezing
it
between your fingers) and tin its leads with solder to fatten
them
up.

Then, slide the VR-with-fattened- leads back into the socket (and
note
it
will fit nice and snug), screw it down and then reassemble the
whole
mess. Gauges will work.

Re: Is 2001 VR6 24V a drive-by-wire

All 2001 and later (24V engine) models utilize an electronic throttle pedal
actuator. Model year 2000 was the last year of a throttle cable, or
mechanical type.

OK. That's a start. I figured out that the tool holder snaps on the
backside of the jack. There's a hole in the tool holder that looks
like it probably accomodates a plastic fastener that would engage the
inner sidewall someway. Every way I tried, though, hits the vent
duct for the battery; still, there is rubber padding on the inner
wheel well.

Every VW I've had has been too clever in this department - once you
take the jack out, I can never remeber how it goes back together.
Maybe it's just me.

Hi Bill,

I wish I could take a picture, I just read your message - but I'm
literally walking out the door on a two week jaunt (river float,
camping, hiking - but not biking) and the morning after I return, I'm
on the road for two weeks on business... I won't be able to take
pictures for a month!

But I'll certainly do it then. I just looked through my last trip
pictures (Moab) to see if I have a picture that shows it, but I don't.
:-(

Yeah, I can't believe they don't have some good pictures on their web
site. Sales prevention at its best.

I did find a couple of pictures of just the cargo rack on a van on
their blog:
.
<>
blogspot.com/2008/04/custom-hitch-cargo-rack.html
and this info about Eurovan's on their site blog:
.
<>
blogspot.com/2007/02/vehicle-fit-series-eurovan.html
bot not exactly what you want to see.

So - I a few minutes so let me say this...

Looking at the one picture they do have, with the rack/bike carrier
combo on the gold SUV... I would say my bikes sit maybe 4" or 5"
higher than that when on my van - because the Eurovan's hitch is
probably about 5" or 6" closer the ground than the SUV pictured - and
the extended post is 10" taller than the std post.

I'm 6' tall and I can easily lift my bike onto the rack. I do have to
lift it up on there, but it's not hard for me to do.

And if looking at that picture again... see how the bikes' tires are
pretty close to the cargo rack - well, the taller post gives you space
between the tires and rack - enough so you can make good use of the
cargo rack. And you can kinda move your bike tires around a bit to
fit stuff on there.

And their bungee net really works good for securing your gear. You
just have to put the bungee net on and then attach your bike rack so
the post is going down through the bungee net.

Now, one issue I've had with this set up is I must put the bikes on
there "just so" with the kids' smaller bikes positioned in a certain
spot so I'm able to swing the whole thing away to open the back door.
And I have to lift the back door when the rack is not all the way
swung out, and then swing it out the rest of the way. It's not a
problem, it's just a little tricky - but once I got it down, it's been
fine.

Now, I have not tried it, but I think if I loaded the bike rack with
four adult mountain bikes, I might have some trouble getting it to
swing away.

That being said, after I read their Eurovan page about how they off
center the box version for a Eurovan, I think if you're going to order
you should talk to them about doing that with the cargo rack too... I
think that would help in getting it out of the way of the Eurovan's
door... and I wish I would have asked them about it when I ordered.
Then I probably would not have to be so exacting about how I load my
bikes and gear to make sure I can get the back door open.

And one last thing, because the Eurovan's hitch is pretty low to the
ground, you have to be a little careful when pulling out of places
with a dip or something... I have scrapped the bottom of the big
"pivot bolt" on the ground a couple of times... but that thing is
stout - and I'm not worried about it at all.

Well, I hope that helps - and like I said, if you can wait a month
I'll take some good pictures. It not, I hope this helps you with your
decision. (Oh, and I don't have any interest in or affiliation with
Stowaway2)

OK - I'm outta here - and won't be reading for a couple of weeks - so
I hope everyone is well!

when loaded a bike on an EV? Their site only shows photos of the
std length post.

Thnx,

It does fit up against the right sidewall of the battery compartment but I am too lazy to go empty out my battery box so that I could describe it to you in better detail or even take a picture - sorry.

there's a VW tool holder - also laying loose - that leads me to believe
there is some slick retention scheme that I'm missing.

On the other hand, the jack was located on the left side in the stock
Eurovan, so maybe Winnebago just took it and threw on the right side to
make room for the furnace. Does anyone have a "factory" retention
setup. It looks like the battery vent duct would interfere if I tried
a mirror image of the stock system.
