Re: Transmission Woes
I read somewhere that VW consider the differential section of an automatic transmission to be 'sealed for life', probably they did not consider the high mileages we put on these vehicles. GoWesty sells an oil, the diff section takes 2 quarts.

Hi David,
Can you tell me how your proceeded to take your old burner off the burner box without damaging the big 'ORANGE' gasket on the side of the box ? I bought a new burner and would like to change it myself but I'm afraid to do so because of the gasket !!! So far, I've removed the Norcold twice to clean the burner in the box and took time also to insulate the back of the fridge and put a switch on the board for the small fan on the coils side..... 开云体育Maybe they forgot to put some o?l in the differential during the rebuild. It’s not normal for a differential to be emply of o?l and it’s not the same o?l used as the one in the transmission !!! When I had my rebuild last year, the guy had to change the cage in the differential along with the pinion gear that were shot.....The pinion gear itself is almost Worth $ 1,000.00 CAD !!! ? Re: Transmission Woes
We communicated on the Eurovan FaceBook site. Something was wrong. Why would the differential be totally dry? Could it, did it leak out after the sensor melted. If so, why did it get so hot that the sensor melted? Other Eurovan sensors aren't melting. Which came first, no gear oil in the first place, differential got so hot it melted the sensor allowing loss of gear oil? You could contact German Transaxle in Bend, Oregon. They definitely would have a differential or differential parts. I feel they are the premier Eurovan automatic transmission gurus. Whether or not they would provide those without handling the rebuild is another matter. Kent Kirkley

To get back on topic, specifically around the differential on the final drive of the transmission, my question is this: Since my Transmission was rebuilt in October of 2019, then 6000 miles was put on it after the rebuild, with my recent problem of a dry differential causing my speedo sensor to melt and my transmission needing a new differential.? Considering the tech cannot find specific differential parts to rebuild, he's now looking for another core to use parts from.? Should I expect to have to pay for this considering gear oil was non existent?? Is it possible that after the rebuild, normal wear would cause such a situation that I should expect to pay for?? OR should I assume that there was an oversight in the initial rebuild.? ?I of course feel the latter since I complained of vibration and whining post rebuild of the transmission.? The shop reviewed and stated nothing was wrong.? Looking back I think now it was a clear indication that there was a problem with the transmission.? Thoughts?

Re: Transmission Woes
Yes.? You never want the TC clutch to cycle much.? OK on light loads/grades.?
But on steep upgrades do the down shift.? depending on the length and steepness.? Long Interstate grades In D2 is ok to drive 45 MPH behind the trucks.? In that low gear plenty of torque so the clutch stays in solid lock.? I downshift on any grade longer than a city block. often you hear the down shift as the revs pick up.? But its not really the downshift.? Its the TC slipping via the pulsating clutch to keep the revs up while remain in the higher gears.? (they did that in order to increase MPG.)? Fine for the Passat.? but our heavy rigs, you will have high fluid temperatures.? The external cooler has been known to burst ruining tranns.? Albeit you will get better MPG with the cooler so the tranny runs more in the higher gear.? Once lugging is sensed, the clutch unloads the engine for more revs which =more HP..? There is the heat source. |

Re: Transmission Woes
The fluid breaks down with high temps.? Loses lubricity and varnishes up the valve body.? You can save money on tranny repairs and fluid changes with one simple TRICK.? Forget its an automatic.? On a long grades and short downshift manually.? The trick is to keep the gears in SOLID LOCK as opposed to theT C working with its fluid submerged pulsating clutches.?
Am original owner with over 175K ODO miles.? It took me 15 tears to figure it out.? No more overheated fluid, no limp modes and no more frequent ATF fluid changes. On the highways long grades, I just slow down into D3 along with the 18 wheeler on long grades.? Short steep grades of a few blocks, just go into D2.? Then test my experience and do it again with full automatic and downshifting manually to see the difference in fluid temperatures by comparing. The last 4 years..Same fluid, and only rare worst short spikes of maybe 220F.? Which OK as long as its short term.? Burt 99 HD original owner |

Look it up on internet, you can make a meter and check it on stove burner outlet.

One more question for everyone...
Could the propane regulator be malfunctioning? ?Can this be tested? ?I saw a comment on another site from an owner who attributed his poor Norcold LP function to low outlet pressure from old regulator. David |
