Re: 1995 EVC Speedometer Cable?

Apologize ahead of time if this is a duplicate message. But couldn’t tell if the first came through.

My cable separated at the threaded connection next to the master cylinder. It appeared to be intact but the two cables were not fully mated. Check that connection first and hopefully that’s all it is.?

See the photo attached at the blue tape.?

Re: Battery Charging via Shore Power

My understanding is that the isolator connects the engine and coach battery when the ignition is turned on.? Therefore you don't really need the jumper in place while driving since both the coach and house battery will be charged by the alternator.

My 95's EVC stock MagnaTech charger died some years ago and I've been too lazy to pull it out and replace it.? To keep my house and engine battery charged while the camper is idle, I plug in a trickle charger to the engine battery and connect the jumper at the firewall on the isolator to keep both engine and coach batteries charged.??

We generally camp at sites with shore power so with the jumper in place both batteries would be getting charged while we are not driving. I assume the jumper wire would allow a charge to the house battery while driving as it is bypassing the solenoid.?

I may make my wire with small booster clamps to make it easier to put on and take off. Currently I plug in the shore power and connect my trickle charger once a month while the van is parked for the winter but only having to plug in an extension cord has its appeal.?

Re: Battery Charging via Shore Power

Here’s a nice upgraded battery isolator that I’ve installed in many Eurovans and have in my personal EV. This does everything your original isolator does but smarter: instead of being ignition triggered it connects the two batteries once a certain voltage is reached (13.2v) that only is reached when alternator is operating normally and disconnects at 12.7v indicative of a fully charged battery.?

But it’s also switchable remotely, so you can wire in a simple switch to the cabin that will connect the two batteries when needed, including for emergency start situations if you size the cables accordingly. I used 4 gauge wire on mine and this feature has bailed me out more than once...

Here’s more info on the one Ive used:

1995 EVC Charging Issues

Bernie Johnsen

Yesterday, while on a day trip about 2.5 hrs from our home, I noticed our cheap dashboard cigarette lighter voltage gauge was reading about 11.7 volts while driving, however, the dash instrument cluster charging light was not on.? I pulled into an auto parts store and they tested the alternator using a test unit that connected to the battery terminals.? The test unit indicated that the voltage regulator failed but the diodes passed.??

I just replaced the engine battery two weeks ago, it was the middle of the day (no lights needed), good weather (no heat needed), so we decided to make a run for home thinking we'd maybe have enough battery power to keep the motor firing.? While driving, over the next 2 hrs, we noticed that about four times, the voltage would jump back up to 13.8 for about 5 min.? The voltage on the gauge would then drop to around 12.4v and would quickly begin dropping as we drove, which I expected.? So I think the voltage regulator was sorta working enough to send some charge to the batteries as we drove and so we made it home.? The day was shot but no expenses for a tow were needed.?

The van has 240k miles on it and the current alternator was replaced over 100k ago.? Should I replace only the voltage regulator or both the alternator and the voltage regulator and is the? voltage regulator part of the alternator or is that a separate part???

Thanks all!

Re: Battery Charging via Shore Power

I believe it is fine to leave?the jumper on the firewall isolator in place since all it does is bypass the isolator when the ignition is off.? I've done this more times than I can count without issue.??

This means however that you'll be drawing current from both the engine and coach batteries when the ignition is off.? So in theory you could drain both the batteries down to the point?where the van might not start if you are parked for a long time and are using power in the van.?

Does the cable need to be removed once camping season returns? Or is it ok to drive with it installed?
I can see how this would be handy in camp keeping the starter battery charged while playing the radio, using front cab lights etc.?

Don't know yet as it's still in the shop. It's saying there are misfires on all cylinders and yet it runs great and all preliminary tests have been good. They're starting to think it's the computer and they're going to swap it out tomorrow.?

Hi Joe,

I've taken my recently purchased 2000 EVC to Hillside Imports over on Beaverton-Hillsdale a couple of times. I have a stubborn Check Engine light that they are currently diagnosing. They've been great to work with so far and being able to walk home after dropping it off has been nice :)
