NOW I understand (tires)!
I have been amazed at how many posts are generated for tires (in the
vanagon group too). I just bought (had to be ordered) some Michelin LTX (215/75R15) from discount tire. They jacked up my rear end so much that I was afraid it would affect the fridge operation. It also had VERY close clearence to the fender well. We tried putting them on the front but clearence was not enough when you turned (have 195/75R15 Goodyears there). So Discount Tire decided to give me 195 Goodyears on the back (they almost had to order these too, I got lucky and they found a pair). What I have learned: No matter what anyone says 215s are WAY too BIG for the 95 EVC. Although I did like the extra clearance it gave the vehicle. 195s are the size recomended in the manual. 205s might work. Tires for this vehilce are hard to find. Because of above you must do your own searching and find the tire, then convince the tire dealer it exist (they most likely will not have it in their database). I dont like the Goodyears that I now have, their tread is a little zig-zagy and possibly noisy due to that. Tires for the EVC are expensive. Last year when I bought the Goodyears they were $150/per tire. So this is why (IMHO) EVC and Vanagon owners are so relentlesly chating about tires. SeanG BTW anyone out there running 215s? |
Re: Step resistor
Donald Gibbons
The resistor you are looking for is in the fan housing under the
glove box. But you can't see it, let alone touch it until the glove is removed. Pull the glove box, a bunch of phillips hd screws, and you will see the fan motor and just to the left of it, the plug to the resistor pack. One phillips hd screw holds it in. When you remove the pack take a look at it. If it is burned or crispy get a new one. But if it looks good then maybe only the thermo fuse is bad. You can replace the fuse. Finding it may take a bit of work, They are sometimes known as TCO's (Thermal Cut Outs) and are available at most electronic supply stores, but maybe not radio shack. The stock one is rated for 216c and you should use one with atleast that (but not much higher) temp rating. There are two ways to remove and replace the fan. The book says remove the dashboard (!) but some on this list have done it by removing the fan only from the motor thru the hole in the firewall (can get at it under the hood) and then removing the motor from inside. The problem is that there is not enough room to remove the motor/fan assy with the dash inplace but removing the fan gives you the room. |
Discounted EV parts
Team Degenerate Motorsports
I noticed a few people on the list talking about parts
prices/availibility for our beloved EV's I just wanted to give you another place to check out - Mike "Potterman" and his wife are super people - I've met him a couple times and competed against him in driving events. They are first folks who love VW's like us and have been a great source of parts to many people on RAMVWWC and the A2-16V and vwautoX lists including myself. I am getting ready to have my timing belt and water pump changed and will be getting the parts thru them - when I saw him last week during the one lap he did mention sourcing EV parts recently with good luck. I am not affiliated with virtual world - just a fan! Bill 93 weekender |

Re: Awning installation
Larry Schellhase
I installed a Shady Boy awning on my 99 EVC. I used
the sheet metal screws that came with the awning. I first mounted the awning using as much 3M double stick mounting tape as I could get on the back of the mounting brackets. I tapped the centers of the holes and drilled pilot holes. I then unstuck the 3M mounting and drilled the screw holes. I didn't find anything except space. My awning is mounted directly over the sliding door (the Shady Boy has a very compact footprint and folds out for a larger coverage area). I used as much marine grade silicone gel as I could get into the holes before putting in the sheet metal screws. It would be much easier if you have a helper to hold things in place. --- "Edward A. Step resistor
Allen Roy
only the High speed works for my dash board heater fan in my 93
Eurovan. I'd like to check the step resistor to see if it is broke, But I don't know just eaxtly where it is. I do not have a car manual, I bought the van used. Or, if there is a fuse that I need to check, where it is. That same fan is making alot of noise, how big of a job is it to replace myself. Allen Roy |

Re: power doorlocks "jumping", 95 EVC
Donald Gibbons
EV power locks operate by following each other. Each door has a
motor/switch unit. When one is locked/unlocked they all do the same. Normally. If one unit gets slow for some reason it will lag behind the others. Then when the other locks see that the first one has not followed it they go back for the laging unit. More or less they will do this forever or untill the battery goes dead. You get the point. What you can do is try and find the unit that is operating slower then the others. This is the bad one. Take it apart and clean/lube/seal it up. Make sure you are careful to put it back together exactly the same as it came apart! |
Re: Awning installation

All:
Has anyone done an awning install on a 99 EVC? I'm doing one tomorrow. What kind of bolts did you use to anchor the mounting brackets? Did you get access on the inside of the Van to put a washer and nut on or did you use some type of expanding fastener from the outside? What did you find when you drilled and where? Anything would be a help, Thanks EAB 99 EVC |

Subject: [ev_update] power doorlocks "jumping", 95 EVC Has any one ever experienced their doorlocks jumping up and down. Mine, on occasion jump up and down many times till I close the door. Sometimes I lock the door from the inside and when I unlock it, it relocks itself. The only way to get out is too open the door very quickly between the time when I unlock it and it relocks itself. At this time, while the door is open is when it "jumps" up and down till you close the door.
