Porta-potty

Russell LaForce

I keep a male urinal in the 93 EV MV, which seems to be mostly
adequate for my family of 4. myself, wife, and two boys (9&11). We
do have a porta-pottie (kenmore) but hardly ever used it and a
plastic washer or seal broke last year and it wasn't worth fixing.

I also belong to the GoodSam Club for RV owners and one page 67 of
the October 99 issue of Highways, there is a description of a
portable commode with 2 sizes for $17 and $11 with replacement
supplies generic from a grocery store. The Company is FENtool Inc.

Re: Engine Fault Codes?

Donald Gibbons

Reading fault codes is easy or hard depending on the year/equipment.

Early 5 cylinder EV's - These have no check engine light. The only
way is with a scanner like VAG 1551, a very expensive item.

Late 5 cylinder EV's - These HAVE a check engine light. By using a
simple jumper wire (sometimes supplied with the car!) you can watch
the check engine light flash the "blink" codes.

VR6 EV's - These all have ODB II control systems that need a VAG 1551
or better to read codes. There are a few cable/software based
aftermarket scanners that hook up to your home computer but these
cost several hundred $.

T4 Paradise

To: EV Group
I visited Koblenz, Germany on business two weeks ago and had an opportunity
to spend a full hour in a beautiful showroom full of various VW vans and
trucks. It was T4 paradise. I looked over and sat in several models as I
sipped my complimentary coffee. I like to collect brochures and here are
the ones I picked up. If anyone has a questions on features I'll try to
answer them. I don't read German or feel I am an expert on these but have the
pictures to describe.
- Der Transporter
- Der Caravelle ( EuroVan GLS is derived from this)
- Der Multivan (MV and MV Weekender are derived from this)
- Der neure Multivan Atlantis( this was a beautiful special edition of the
Multivan with grey/blue seating fabric that was sharp. It has the neat
reversible center seats with the option of having a cooler in place of the
right center seat. List price was 73,000 DM list or about $36,000 US with the
2.8 Otto V6. The showroom model had many options including a navigation
system built into the dash and was prices in the 85,000 DM area with taxes.
They also have a 2.5 liter TDI with 5 speed listing for 57,645 DM or $29,000
US. Wish we had this model in North America! I would consider it. )
- Der California Coach ( closest we have is the Winnebago camper but this
model offers many more variations as they all do)
- Der California Advantage (looks like a special edition Coach)
- Der Colorado ( now we are getting serious. This looks like the front of
the Eurovan pasted onto a camper. Like the Rialta I believe.)
- Der Missouri ( not the T4 platform. I think it is an LT platform. It
looks nicer than my house on the inside!!)

A far cry from my local NJ dealer where it is a rare sight to even see any EV
in the parking lot.

Is there any way to read the engine fault codes that are stored in the

Re: Awning installation - Fiama 45 Plus

Edward A. Bevan

Kent:

I'm installing a 45+ 8'2" on my 99 EVC now. I don't know how similar
your brackets are though, mine are the T-4 brackets which don't mount on
rain gutters but rather require drilling ( that's right, DRILLING ) the
outside panels and bolting the brackets on. My job is going quite well,
but it is involved. Instead of using rivnuts or expanding bolts, I
decided to drill through both walls and then remove part of the interior
to put a small steel plate in there and spin some nuts on. This is doing
it the hard way for sure, but after talking to many people including an
auto body tech and a very nice man at Fiamma ( pronounced fee-AMA )
named Bob that does their installs. I decided that it's the right way
for me. As a matter of fact I just got back from the Hardware store with
some rare 1/4 20 X 3" stainless steel bolts and lock nuts and so I'll
probably finish up tomorrow if I can get some good silicone caulk
somewhere.

As for the awning, I'm so pleased that someone else bought one so that
others will be able to compare our comments on it rather than just
having one source. The weight is a little daunting. The first thing you
think is that somebody made a mistake and shipped you a piece of farming
equipment instead of an awning, but then you open up the box and see
that it is in fact an awning, only heavier than you thought it would be.
I'm excited about this awing but I'll restrict my comments to the
following until I've finished the install and have a little experience
with it. It's about 50 lb.. It seems to be of very good quality and
design. It has sporty good looks that would go well with most white
vans.

Also: Fiamma assures me that for an awning of this length, two brackets
are quite sufficient. Judging from the way things seem, I agree. As for
it damaging the vehicle I'm not sure how you mean. I see know reason to
fear this, but this could be the difference between our Vans.

Good luck

I ordered one from Go Westy. It just arrived yesterday. It seems
pretty heavy and only utilizes 2 brackets to attached it to the
vehicle. I'm a little worried about it damaging the vehicle.

On the other hand, the additional weight on the passenger side should
help balance the overall weight displacement from all the equipment
on the drivers side.

Any feedback on it's functionality and the strenght/integrity of the
brackets?

I'm doing one tomorrow.

What kind of bolts did you use to anchor the

Did you get access on the inside of the Van to put a
washer and nut on
or did you use some type of expanding fastener from
the outside?

What did you find when you drilled and where?

Anything would be a help, Thanks

Sunroofs

Hello, I'm new to this group and have just purchased a 2000 MV. I
love my new van, in fact it is the van I have been waiting 20 years
for someone to make. I had a '71 bus many years ago and loved it, but
my new Eurovan is far superior in many ways. I just had a sunroof put
in this week and was told that they would be able to install a 17x36
sunroof. What I got was a 16x32 sunroof. They claimed that the roof
braces did not allow for the 36" length of the larger sunroof. I find
this very difficult to believe, as there is a 5" clearance between
the frame of the 32" sunroof and the roof braces, as measured on the
roof. I simply can't believe that a 36" sunroof will not fit. Can
anyone on this board offer me information that can support that a
sunroof larger than 32" is possible? I am looking for some proof for
support, because I want to go back to this place and demand a larger
sunroof. I'm very disappointed in how the little sunroof they
installed looks in the large area over the cab. Also, does anyone
know the dimensions of the factory power sunroof? Thanks for any and
all input on this, I appreciate it. Kathy

EV Ignition Wires

RocknRolz

A few days ago someone on the list was looking for ignition wires for the
EV. I found a set of Bosch wires for $59 (on sale) on the BusDepot web site.
I am using the Bosch wires currently and they fir well. However, I paid over
$80 at a local store. Mine came with a lifetime warranty.

1. Lots of people will say "that's a neat awning" or
more likely "that's a neat little awning"

2. You can get it in almost any color or color
combination you want. Mine is solid dark blue.

Re: 2000 cough question???

Jeffrey L. Krattenmaker

This Spring, I experienced the very same scenario ... an occasional cough
that lit the check engine light ... the dealer first changed one plug wire,
then the ignition coil but all to no avail. Finally a stuck EGR valve was
replaced and I haven't seen the check engine light come on, since.

Please post what the dealer tells you the problem is.

I've been dealing with a problem with similar symptoms for about 6
months with my 97. Some coughs are worse than others, and the check
engine light doesn't always come on, nor does a OBD code get stored,
after the smaller ones. The first suspected culprit was bad plug
wires. Replacing those didn't fix it, and the cough gradually became
more frequent. The next guess was a bad ignition coil pack.
Replacing it (under a "goodwill" warranty, fortunately) seemed to
help, but the cough has gradually come back. The light finally came
on this week, so it goes back in for service next week.

I can't be sure we've got the same problem, but whatever it is has
stumped the "experts." Maybe yours is smarter than mine. I'd rather
not use the dealer to solve this, but if it is still the ignition
coil pack (~$400 part plus ~$150 labor), I want THEM to replace it
under the warranty instead of "coughing" that up myself.

Re: 2000 cough question???

Michael G. McCarthy

The advice given re the saved codes is exactly correct, but the first thing I always do before calling in the troops (ie, the dealer mechanics and their diagnostic 'puters) is to make SURE connectors are hooked up properly. ?VWs (Bosch) wiring has gotten better over the years, but is still not as good as Japanese. ?The connectors are prone to water contamination, corrosion, and simply bad mechanical contact. ?There are also instances of simple underdesign (the infamous fuel pump relay overloading the fuse plate on ALL water-cooled VW's from the mid-70's to mid-80's comes to mind. ?TEN years of underdesign -- ?where are the class action attorneys when you need them?).

Obviously a new vehicle probably doesn't have corrosion or water contamination problems (yet), but they might. ?When I have an intermittent problem I get under the hood and inspect/re-connect every connector I see. ?Any EEC system generally requires ALL inputs (temps, throttle position, RPM, and a host of others) to function at maximum efficiency. ?If info is missing or sporadic, the EEC will typically default to rich (ie, safe) modes. ?Your vehicle will then run rougher, miss occasionally, and get poorer mileage (all of which are better than defaulting to a lean mode, which can result in overheating and damage because generally lean burns hotter -- sometimes much hotter -- than rich).

A small screwdrive to pop the clip on each wiring connector and a can of WD-40 can work wonders.

Mike

Re: 2000 cough question???

Donald Gibbons

Your EV has a very nice engine control system called OBD II. I say it
is nice cause it has a very good memory. Anything that happends while
the engine is running that causes the check engine light to come on
will be recorded. Then when you take it to the dealer and say "It did
this" they hook up to their computer and see what happened.

Since your EV is under warrenty (Right?) take it back and let them
have a look. It should not cost you anything.

Oh, and don't worry about them not knowing about EV's. The OBD II
system is used by all VW since late in 96.

Re: Awning installation - Shady Boy?

Larry Schellhase

In a strong wind I would most likely take it down.
Although a couple of times the strong wind came while
we were away from the van and it survived, it looked
somewhat like an inverted umbrella.

The two things I like most about it are the small
footprint and the height. I am 6'5" and most awnings
keep knocking me in the head. I can pitch the Shady
Boy so that I never run into it (I only have to watch
out for tripping on the guy lines).

I think "pitch it" is the correct term for setting up
this awning, it is a lot like a backpacking tent.
Which is another reason I like it, it is light weight
and funcitonal - no unnecessary frills.

While set up is not difficult, it does require some
thought. For this reason I would not recommend it for
my mother, she is 80.

I haven't yet had the opportunity to use it in a
strong rain. In a rain I would have to pitch it with
the outside edge lower than the van side of the awning
to get the runoff going in the right direction. This
will take away my head room, however, I think it would
provide a nice dry spot in front of the door - with
the exception that, as with most awnings, there will
be some leakage between the awning and the van.
