I am not certain but the early (code AAF) low compression EV 5 cyl
engines are probably ok if the timing belt broke, but the latter
(code ACU) high compression engines and all diesels would not be.
A side issue (not on any engine presently used in EV's) is if the
valves will hit each other when the belt breaks. Many VW mulitvalve
head designs have a small chain connecting the cams that will prevent
this.
