Actually, the door speakers are 6 3/4 and the biggest issue you will
run into is finding some that are shallow enough to fit if you want a
OEM look. The cutout in the dash is for 4 inch speakers - you can
easily remove the current tweeters but also finding replacements is a
bit tricky.
The wiring is going from the stereo to the tweeter to the door speakers.
The rear panel speakers are 5 inch and there are no good and easy
replacements avail. I tried a couple of things but at the end of the
day it seemed easiest to just leave the stock speakers in.
I replaced the door speakers with a set of Sony's (cut off the coax
tweeter) and replaced the dash tweeters with a set of coaxes
(Infinities). I then added an external crossover. Net result is more
transparence in the mids and highs, still mumbling weak lows (which
almost entirely disappear when going more than 45 mph.
Its hard to make it into a concert hall.
And yes, first thing replace the stock radio unit. It sucks.

I just got my 2003 EVC about a month ago. The stereo had been replaced
w/ a Sony. I was planning to replace the speakers soon. I know the
doors are 6 /12. What about the dash? I took off the cover and it
looks kinda funky. Will aftermarket speakers mount ok? What size?
