Speaker upgrade for 2003 EVC
Larry Schellhase
Two years after I had some body work done on my 99 EVC both the radio and the speakers were blown out, don't know what happened in the body shop.
Anyway, I took it to Al & Ed's Autosound and replaced the radio with an Alpine. The manager said that the only speakers that would fit the existing cutouts were MB Quart 6.5" speakers. MB Quart is a German company. The speakers were expensive at $250 for the pair but they fit and sound great. For some reason neither the tweeters (dash speakers) or the rear speakers were affected. Actually, the door speakers are 6 3/4 and the biggest issue you will

run into is finding some that are shallow enough to fit if you want a OEM look. The cutout in the dash is for 4 inch speakers - you can easily remove the current tweeters but also finding replacements is a bit tricky. The wiring is going from the stereo to the tweeter to the door speakers. The rear panel speakers are 5 inch and there are no good and easy replacements avail. I tried a couple of things but at the end of the day it seemed easiest to just leave the stock speakers in. I replaced the door speakers with a set of Sony's (cut off the coax tweeter) and replaced the dash tweeters with a set of coaxes (Infinities). I then added an external crossover. Net result is more transparence in the mids and highs, still mumbling weak lows (which almost entirely disappear when going more than 45 mph. Its hard to make it into a concert hall. And yes, first thing replace the stock radio unit. It sucks. Florian 03 MVWK --- In ev_update@..., "drnich2222" <drnich2222@...> wrote:

If I remember correctly, the EVC has a radio and speakers that are different
from all other Eurovan models. Many of us non-EVC owners are quite satisfied with the original front-door speakers. Should any EVC owner desire the original front door speakers in perfect condition from a Weekender, let me know. Bob W. ****Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Excellent point. Somehow I thought he was talking about a Weekender.

The rear speakers for the EVWK are unique and not easily replaced.

They are straight 5 inch speakers. But its not only that, the frame is pretty unique too and won't really allow for an airtight fit to enhance the bass. Most people, after trying a couple of things, resort to keeping the stock speakers. In the end any replacement would be only marginally better. And there is not a lot of space to build in other speakers without impacting any of the moving parts (like the bed). Florian 03MVWK - have tried to replace the rears at least 3 times. Still stock. --- In ev_update@..., "neal34695" <neal34695@...> wrote:

I attached them using their brackets to the seat belt brackets on either side using (lots of) nylon ties. I ran wires up & under the trim panels toward the rear and the amp. (or, if no amp, toward the front and solder into the original rear speaker wires). The Audiosources swivel toward the rear in case I want to have a "tailgate party". |

I finally ordered speakers from Circuit City and had them install.
The original EVC speakers are 6 1/2 " in the door w/ tweeters in the dash. They have a crossover in there as well. The door speakers are rather shallow and most will not fit. Polk makes the DB series separates as well as a DB series slim that work. I used Polk separates(db series) in the front and Polk DB 461 in rear (4x6's). I just had Circuit City install as I didnt feel like messing w/ Crossovers. Cost me less than $70 for install. Sound is good. --- In ev_update@..., "Florian" <fkahlert@...> wrote: wrote: know thereplaced and itdoors are 6 /12. What about the dash? I took off the cover size?looks kinda funky.
