Repower of my sailboat 5
Hi group, I am currently planning to repower my 35' trimaran to electric and need to find someone with direct experience sizing motors and other important considerations for such a project. Anyone with this type of knowledge please post or email me. Also if Oconaill has the Motor System which was posted on 11/28 I would like to discuss how that might work for my conversion.

EBAA Journal
I arrived home last night to find the latest issue of the Electric Boat Journal in my mail. It is a 32 page double issue, jammed with information and stories about electric boating. Many thanks to Ken Matthews for devoting two of those pages to the Electric Boat Club (p. 18-19). This should help get the word out that this is a great place to exchange ideas and information. From recent conversations I can see that our group is both serious and knowledgeable. What a fantastic resource!

Motor, prop and gear testing 2
Hi Donaldbear and all,<br>You asked in an earlier post if you could have a copy of some Motor/prop data for your spreadsheet. I'm going to be doing some motor, prop and gear testing in a month or so. If your interested I'll send you a copy of the data I collect. The data will have e-meter output, shaft rpm, and boat speed. Along with the data I can give you the specs. for the equipment used so you have a baseline. (I have a friend with tons of props I can swap out until I find the right one) BTW, a very accurate and cheap Tach can be had at "Wal-Mart ($19.97). It's sold as a "BELL" Bike Speed computer but it works great as a RPM sensor. It uses a Hall effect sensor and magnet for sensing and with two magnets is good to +/- 4 RPM (0~1660 rpm). After mounting(on prop shaft), to use, read the speed of the display and convert it to RPM using (RPM = speed read from Bell bike spedo*5280*12/62.9/60/2). The "62.9" is for the 27" wheel setting of the Speedo and the "two" is for two magnets. You can record your boat speed and tach readings and convert it later. Using a tach of some kind to get shaft revs will give better data to work out the gearing with..<br>Enjoy the Holidays<br>Joe Peek<br>ECB<br>P.S. in you speadsheet how high an eff. are you seeing with the data collected so far...like hp in, hp out or % eff?

Maiden Voyage 7
I launched my 23' fantail at the end of August, subsequently worked on installing the propulsion system components and, a few days ago, managed to take her out for her maiden voyage. Since then I've had her out a couple more times and can now give a preliminary report.<br><br>Most important to me, the motor is extremely quiet even at speed. This was one of my two prime reasons for going with electric propulsion but until the boat was actually in the water and moving along at cruising speed I just had no idea how it would really sound. As it is, the noise of the bow wave is louder than the low hum of the motor. So this aspect was a resounding, important success.<br><br>The othe big question was speed/range. I am using a 13 X 12 prop that was given to me--quite a bit smaller than I'd been intending. But I thought that I'd see what she would do with that setup. <br><br>What I find is that the boat's most efficient speed seems to be around 4.3kts or so. At that rate she draws 20A (just under 1 hp). Since I don't want to draw my battery bank down below about 70%, that gives me a realistic range of 8.9 hours (as calculated by my e-meter) or roughly 36 mi.! I'd been hoping for around 25 which will be about the most I would ever need. The farthest I've "cranked it up" so far is 60A which is the equivalent of about 3hp. (The motor is rated at 4.1hp continuous/ 6hp peak.) At 60A she does 6.2kts but has a range of only 17mi. or so. But 6.2kts seems like bombing along (and in a straight line!) to a guy who's used to sailing, paddling, or rowing little boats around this lake!<br><br>Larry

Electric propulsion for 18-20' boat 2
Greetings! I have some questions that I'm hoping some of you might be able to answer.<br>My intent is to use one or two submersible electric motors, e.g., Minn Kota RT 70, 24V, to propel a smaller boat that will have ample room for two people and two large dogs. There are ready-built displacement hull launches available, but they are "pricey" and the layout is not ideal for our situation. I'm considering an aluminum fishing boat with a planing hull (e.g., a Lund) as these have the entirely open layout that I desire with high freeboard and lots of room for the sea dogs.<br>I understand the loss of efficiency compared to a displacement hull compounded by the fact that electric motors are a bit under powered. Does this make the idea unworkable? Does weight play a factor? The aluminum runabout would not weigh nearly as much as the fiberglass launch.<br>I need to consider initial cost vs. usability. I can carry extra batteries for cruises of six to eight hours if necessary. Another possibility is the "expedition" type canoe of long ago. The hull would work better, but I also need stability as there is coastal cruising (New England, primarily CT and RI) involved.<br>Speed is not critical -- the boat will obviously not plane with electric propulsion. Am I loony or this idea worth looking into? I would appreciate any comments, from anyone who has done anything even remotely similar or anyone who has any suggestions. Thanks!<br><br>Doug<br>taliesin@...

Hull Speed (Was: Maiden Voyage) 2
Thanks for initiating the discussion on hull speed and, conveniently, using my launch as the example! Before building the boat I performed much the same calculation and arrived at much the same result as to theoretical maximum hull speed. The designer specified the speed as "up to 6 knots". The hull speed is actually just about 6 kts.<br><br>I have always understood, however, that "hull speed" was not quite as inflexible as you describe. My various displacement boats over the years have always been able to exceed hull speedeven the ones I rowed!<br><br>I think of it more like riding a bike. While youre on the flats it takes more power to go faster but the application of that power generally results in a fairly rewarding addition of speed.<br><br>When a boat hits its hull speed its like encountering a hill on the bike. (Its actually very much like this since the displacement hull is in effect trying to climb the hill of its own bow wave as it tries to increase speed, right?) So as you try to peddle the bike faster AND uphill it takes quite a bit more effort for even a little increase in speed. And for our displacement hull its as if the hill gets steeper with each little increment of speed you try to add. At some point you are working VERY, VERY hard to go even just a little bit faster. Just aint worth it.<br><br>This particular thread started because of my stating that I had installed a prop that was less than ideal (I think) and was wondering what effect a change of prop or shaft rpm would have on performance. But, like most of us electric boaters, the goal is not so much faster as FARTHER. If a change of prop/shaft speed could convert my most efficient cruising speed from 4 kts. to 4.4 kts with the same amp draw, then Ive added significant miles to my range.<br><br>There are some photos of the boat at: <a href=http://www.tsca.net/puget/AmberLaunch.htm target=new>http://www.tsca.net/puget/AmberLaunch.htm</a> which were taken at the launch in Aug. I have some later photos with the boat underway, under power, but, unfortunately, I need to find a friend who can scan them for me. <br><br>Larry

Propeller effency
Does anyone have any first hand expierence with using a Kort nozzle on electric boats. My research seem to indicate that they may help especialy when dealing with the low speed that electric boats tend to run. One manufacturer of an electric outboard claims a 50% increase effecency in prop performance with speed up to 10 to 12 knots. I know that they will increase the thrust especialy at lower speeds and are used on tug boats. How much increase in speed can we expect?? It might be an area where we can all benifit if it will "lighten the load" on the motor. If the data that I have seen about tug boats (which is where they appear to be most widly used) can be can be carried over to the electric propulsion of small boats it should result in a BIG increase in effency especialy at low propeler speed. If you can take a prop which is 40% effecient at say 4 knots and even increase its effency by 30% it should result in a decrease in motor loads which would greatly extend range.

Cog belt discussion
Thanks for your offer Don. Let me see how things go this spring. I may be getting back to you. I need to get the storage area in the stern closed in for the life jackets and finish fitting out the cuddy cabin first.<br><br>Thanks again,<br>Jim "Zinger"

Photos finially posted 10
I finially got some photos uploaded. I don't know why they still say "0" by my album, but they are there. These are in reference to my message # 20, way-back last year. The hull and stopsides are awlgrip paint. This spring I want to non-skid the decks anad add some varnished teak trim. I just put it on a trailer before Christmas and moved it home for the winter. <br><br>It might interest some of you in knowing this is a low budget yacht. I have less than $2,000 invested so far, including a $300 trailer I had to purchase. It took most of the summer getting it ready to use, but it was worth it. My wife and i like leisurely cruises down the Sassafras River. It fits us just perfect.<br><br>My project over the winter is a 24 volt go-cart.<br><br>Best wishes to everyone during the upcoming New Year.<br><br>Zinger

The New Year 2
It seems that the Electric Boat Club has found a niche for enthusiasts. I have enjoyed "listening" to the recent conversations and have learned much.<br>We have the ability to exchange ideas, post photos and we have listed a few links to related companies and groups. What can we do to make the club better in 2000? Your ideas and suggestions are most welcome. Paul

Boat Use 2
Larry - Great suggestion. I'll start. In fact I just wrote a short article for the EBAA on this subject at Ken's request. Our 14' Elco is kept in our garage, winter and summer. I am fortunate to have a large enough space that it fits on its trailer with the cars in place. It is just a few minutes from here to the Erie Canal and Becky and I have spent many hours cruising its quite waters in silence - enjoying the herons, ducks, osprey and other birds. We have taken it to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where we cruised some of the backwater bays and sanctuaries. We have taken on Adirondack Lakes, Vermont Lakes and Otter Creek. Most cruses are two hours or less. We can't get up and walk around so the body kind of gets tired - although I have been out in it for over four hours non-stop. We sometimes take a picnic supper or lunch and just dine in solitude and quiet. Becky sometimes reads and I just enjoy watching the shore move by. We have taken family and friends - but I do think a 19-21' boat is better at that. The 14' launch is ideal for the two of us in many ways. It is easy to launch, trailer, and get into tight places.

Electric 35 foot sailboat 2
Aloha to David Tether. My husband and I might just take you up on a sail on your boat. We are months away from investing in a electric system for our 35 foot sailboat recently launched. www.aloha.net/~encore<br>Seeing is believing and here in Hawaii, it is hard to find boats of this nature. Do you know of any similar sailboats on the west coast closer to us? By the way, we hear rumours here at the EVA meetings that "the wheel" system has fizzled. According to your email thats not true. Correspondance from anyone in the EBA Club would be appreciated regarding a system for a 35 foot sailboat... Mahalo Gabriella

valentines visit to Solomon Tech.
We are ready to purchase our ticket to come to Maryland - just waiting to make arrangements with you. It will be a fun valentines trip. My email address is encore@.... Please email me your email address and phone number so we can discuss the details - the most important being that we would love to get out on the water on your boat and see how your system works and then we can happily return to hawaii and report it is not fizzling! I cant tell you how excited we are to finally begin this transition. We are particularly interested in your boat on the chesapeak (sp?) as my husband is a 7th generation wooden boat builder and for our travels he needs a portable generator to run his tools when he works on other boats or for emergencies etc etc... we only use our motor in and out of harbors and think that a recharging prop under sail is great (although I think our speed is more like 5-7 knots). Can you also give me the phone number of Dr. Frank Robinson with his permission? I used to be a LA County Lifeguard in his neck of the woods and might make arrangements to have my parents visit his boat as my dad is a lover of boats and very mechanical. They will be driving through LA within a month on their way to Oregon. I would like to have my fathers opinion on this too. Anyways, time is of essence, I am actually going to try to call information and track you down as my ticket agent told me that I need to purchase my ticket "yesterday" to get the keen price they quoted me. Great article in multihulls
Solomon Technologies article in Multihulls was outstanding, and if you check the most recent issue of Home Power Magazine you'll find two electric boats featured there on pg.60 "Solar Boats in Finland" You can download a .pdf of the whole issue #74 and read/print that article. <a href=http://www.homepower.com/index.htm target=new>http://www.homepower.com/index.htm</a><br>Hey E-boaters, sorry to have gotten so quiet but I have refocused my attention until the Ice thaws in the South River, where my boat now rests under 18" of fresh powder. My attention is now on dreaming of the trimaran conversion and driving my new Electric VW Vanagon 120V DC.I picked it up last week and can't wait to drive my converted e-van to my E-boat this spring for an entire electric commute/weekend. Sorry it's slightly off topic but I had to tell someone who would appreciate it:)

Solomon Tech's web site 2
Hello David,<br>Have you gotten Solomon Technologies web site up and running yet? I would love to learn more about your new motor. We have about 12" of snow here on the Upper Eastern Shore also. I have drifts 1/2 way up my 22' boat and trailer. My electric gokart is UNDER one of the large snow drifts. Glad to hear you are progressing so well.<br><br>Zinger

Chat Room 2
To my knowledge we have never used the Chat Room as a club. David Tether, of Solomon Technologies has offered to be in the Chat Room to discuss various technical issues with members. We have selected February 7th, at 8-10 pm EST as the time and date for the Chat. I felt this should give members sufficient time to plan on participating and also allow our West and East Coast members to join in following work (Sorry Hawaii!) Let's see how this works. Paul
