I set things up on my FT857D going through a Timewave Navigator USB sound device and below are my results.? Below, this is what I see on my setup regardless if the Radio's DATA cable is NOT-connected, connected (but the radio is off), and Radio is on 144.390.? Is your issue around line item #2 being present?? Considering that I'm seeing this packet when no cable is connected means it's NOT an FT857 thing per se.? All I can guess is that HTs are grounding their "audio out" lines when PTT is asserted.? Compared to other setups where the lines are floating and Direwolf is sensitive enough to hear the "bleed through" from the other audio lines.

Would you agree with my findings here?

Hello Mike,

Ah.. interesting.? I also have an FT857.? Let me see if I can reproduce your problem and if so, maybe this could be a legit enhancement request to work around a radio "quirk".? It might be a challenging feature so only John would be able to comment on if/when it would be added.

Re: Audio "Feedback"

That is correct with the 857. It only happens with the 857 if the mic in is connected with the speaker output of the 857. If I disconnect the mic and ptt line, all is well. Having either one or both connected cause the sound cards to hear itself. And this could be caused by the configuration I'm using. I have nothing isolating the two lines like most will do. They are connected directly to their destinations with a resistor in line to reduce audio levels.?
But it's all a headache. I'm learning, but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.?

Hello Mike,

?

I don't think it's a software issue with the sound cards, except for the filtering problem. Since I read on another thread that should filter out my beacons but it doesn't.? And I don't think it's a lot to ask for a mute on transmit sorta thing but I don't expect it to ever be coded in. Never hurts to ask. That's why I'm here trying to figure out the weird audio issues. As for the cards. In all technicalities you could say they are all bad. They all do it on my 857D it appears. So I'm hesitant to get any cards at this point because it's so hit and miss on the end result. And a big miss on my 857.

I think I might have misunderstood your previous email.? Are you saying that regardless of the soundcard you use with your FT857, Direwolf is always hearing what it's sending?? Putting it another way, it sounds like there might be an issue the way that the FT857 behaves in that it connects received audio to sent audio maybe when the radio is keyed up?? If you were to disconnect the PTT line from the radio, does Direwolf still hear itself sending packets?? Does Direwolf still hear itself if the AFSK cable is disconnected from the FT857?

So not sure what to do. I love APRS and Direwolf but this is a headache for any transmitting.?

Mike,

Why do you think this is a software issue?? You have working USB devices and you also have broken devices.? I don't think it's a valid ask to have the software try to work around broken hardware.? I'm just guessing here but I suspect the play audio output getting into the record audio input.? This could be due to bad connectors, a bad PCB, bad components, a bad mixer in the CM soundcard chip, etc.? I would just trash the bad devices and replace them.

Hello Mike,

Considering the Amazon link charges $7.99 for these white sound cards (and I had issues with them myself with Direwolf on a Raspberry Pi), why not give the Syba units a try for $6.25 : .? Ultimately back to your original question: it sounds like your malfunctioning USB sound devices are defective since you can swap in an identical good unit and then things work fine.? Btw, your good and bad sound devices identify themselves identically so there is something else wrong with the defective units them behind the USB interface.

I have one of those chipsets. It does provide the same issue when nothing is plugged in. Once I plug it into the radio it's gone. I may purchase some more of these and see how it goes.?

The cheap ones I purchased are great outside of this one issue. I don't have an interference from them.

Re: Audio "Feedback"

Further testing, even that chipset does similar feedback. Using the CM119 on my Yaesu 857D, no matter the setup it hears itself but not on my HTs. There's gotta be a way to have it mute itself on TX? Or even filter itself out. I tried using the FILTER 0 0 ! b/NA7Q-7 and nothing was filtered out. Unless I'm not understanding how the filter works?

Hello Mike,

?
These are the cards I'm using in the link below. I have 2 of the same in working order that do not have this issue. I have another card that I'm unsure of the brand that is also fully functional without the issue. It's the new ones that have the issue. If I swap the sound card with the known working ones, the issue goes away.
I will get a capture of the cards.

I bought a similar looking USB sound device from Adafruit some time ago:

??

Unfortunately, I found the Adafruit unit was creating huge amounts of EMI (strong birdies and broadband noise) on various 2m packet frequencies (144.015Mhz, etc).? As such, I boxed it up and never plan on using it again.? I just dug it out and this is what I see when I connected it to my system:

seen run dmesg:

--

I would recommend you use the recommended Syba SD-CM-UAUD soundcard which uses the CM-119 chipset.? They are known to be reliable, reliably made, are inexpensive, etc.? One of the key issues I've seen with these cheap soundcards is that when they are first introduced on the market, they work.? Then other competitors jump in, copy it, cheapen it up, and the resulting product start to have various quality issues like DOA, intermittent operation, EMI
issues due to a lack of proper filtering/shielding, etc.

The errors in the background were from Xastir, caused by me closing Direwolf. Nothing wrong there. But I'm using Direwolf with APRSDroid over BT on one Pi. But that isn't part of the issue, as I also use Xastir on the same device.

Ok.. check out that one APRSdroid ticket to make sure you're using rfcomm in a compatible way.

Hello Mike,

Few basic questions:

?? 1. Are you running PulseAudio on your Raspberry PI's?? It's generally not recommended for these low end computers and it's recommended to uninstall it.?

?? 2. When you say you have some soundcards working well and "new same" sound cards that perform poorly.? Which sound devices are these?? Can you swap out a bad unit for a known good unit and prove that the problem follows the sound card?

????? 2.a.? If the problem follows the sound card, capture the output of "sudo lsusb -vvvv" for both the bad and good cards.? Send us the difference here to see if the cards are seen identically or not

Ps.? I see you're working with Direwolf here.? Your email here was a bit vague, your screen shot also showed errors with AGW/PE, etc.?? If you're using Bluetooth with Aprsdroid and Direwolf, there was a newer APK posted on the the AprsDroid site addressing some TCP-KISS issues:

??

Audio "Feedback"

I'm using various setups with Direwolf on Raspberry Pi's, but I have some strange audio issues that I haven't had until I got some new sound cards. They are the same as the other I use in my installations without any issues.?

So my issue is the input seems to hear everything that's going through the output. Anything I send, is heard and displayed by Direwolf as being heard. Even with nothing plugged in. Only if I mute the mic does the issue go away, but then I can't receive anything. Is there some sort of solution for this issue? Or do I need to toss away my sound card for new ones.

Re: Audio Level Indicator

-? ? ? ? ??

An explanation, of the two numbers after the audio level, can be found in the documentation section:

Re: Audio Level Indicator

ill bet im wrong
but what ive gathered its kind of a result of a poll of the decode
and you want the yeas/nays to sort of equal the bigger number on the left
so if you see 60 31/27 ?thats pretty good ?but 60 15/35 ?thats not so good

i hope im wrong ?buts its a fun explanation

Re: Smart...CBEACON????

Thanks all?for the input.

I think David (KI6ZHD) was the kick in the right direction I needed. For some reason, I was stuck on the Direwolf SMARTBEACON idea, and the Linux AX25 'beacon' just never came to me. Strange thing is, I did something very similar a long time ago on another project.

Should be a?fairly straight forward?BASH?script to run a PERL / PYTHON routine to check on the vitals (Temp/voltage/sunlight etc.) and decide what to do from there. I'll dig into this option further when I get a chance.

Audio Level Indicator

Sorry if I overlooked this in the documentation, but what do the numbers in parentheses mean in the audio level output?

The "34/21" in this example:

... audio level = 68(34/21) ...

Thanks in advance.
