Re: What part of the config page do I change the input?
Hello Justin,
Now with both radios connected to my pc it mixed up my
inputs line up.
Please define "mixed up my inputs".? Are you talking about the names
of the soundcard inputs / outputs?? Are you talking about serial
ports for asserting PTT?? Please be specific.
I was thinking under the Adevise line where I
originally had my 991A as 2&1. Now I need it to be 3&1.
What do you mean by "2&1" and "3&1".? That's not valid
syntax for Direwolf or Linux as far as I know.
Is this not the section that needs to be changed in
order to select my inputs? Or do I have my understanding all
wrong. Right now direwolf is retransmitting packets but it’s not
pulling them into my software for it to hear.?
If this is about sound devices changing on you, the issue is around
persistent device enumeration and this is mentioned in the Direwolf
User Guide page 53 which points to this URL for more help:

What part of the config page do I change the input?
Hello everyone.?
? ? Let me start with a little backstory. I have direwolf running on my windows desktop with my 991A. Everything was working just fine. I broke down and purchased a new home and upgraded to the FTDX-10 in the process. Now with both radios connected to my pc it mixed up my inputs line up. I was thinking under the Adevise line where I originally had my 991A as 2&1. Now I need it to be 3&1. Is this not the section that needs to be changed in order to select my inputs? Or do I have my understanding all wrong. Right now direwolf is retransmitting packets but it’s not pulling them into my software for it to hear.?

Hello Armando,
Can you please only copy/paste the text from the window itself
into the emails and NOT send screen captures?? These are very hard
to read which require me to save each picture as a file, then view
them with another picture viewer app, and then zoom in.? Very
cumbersome.? I see you're using VNC but if you copy text from your
Raspberry Pi GUI window, that text should copy over to your Mac's
paste clipboard which should be pasteable into your email client.
Thanks for all the advice. I just connected all
again to get a screenshot of the error but didn't get one at
all. This is what I got:
?? - IMG_8422.jpg did not show any errors and showed a successful
IPv6 connection to a remote APRS-IS server
?? - IMG_8423.jpg also did not show any errors and showed a
successful APRS-IS connection and received an APRS record
?? - IMG_8427.jpg shows that you have sent a packet (line prefixed
with 0L) and a Direwolf received audio level of 0.? That low level
signal is bad but it's not 100% clear what the packet is.? Your
station might be hearing itself via poor wiring or more likely, the
poor audio stages on inexpensive radios.? If that is a real packet,
you need to slightly increase the audio level out of the radio as
well as increase the microphone gain on the Raspberry Pi to give an
average Direwolf audio level of around 50.? You *will* see some
stations LOWER audio levels as well as? other stations HIGHER
levels.? You'll just have to do your best.
?? - I did not see any transmissions from your station so you might
consider setting up a OBEACON (Object beacon) so you can ensure the
output audio levels are correct and ultimately remote stations will
be able to decode your AX.25 packets
?? - For IMG_8426.jpg,? click on the KI5TFY-2 (R) icon.? In the
popup that comes up, click on the "info" field.? In the new window
that opens up, click on the "RAW" URL at the top of the screen.?
That will show you all packets being heard.? If it asks you to log
in and you don't have an account, I highly recommend to create one
as APRS.FI is a hugely helpful tool for anyone who runs an APRS
device of any kind.
?? - For IMG_8426.jpg, the KI5TFY-2 (D) icon showing up, this
probaby means you're sending multiple beacons out.? That's perfectly
fine but the last heard beacon will be the one shown on the screen
and the others are hidden below it.? Back on the APRS "info" view on
aprs.fi, the lower part of that screen will show all the beacons
heard from your station.? If you want all of them to be viewable on
the map, you need to change each's beacons GPS locations by a
fraction be it north / south / east / west.?
I am also transmitting a package with this set up:
APRDroid is a very nice Android app but no different than the
warnings with Direwolf, the use of Beofeng radios can/will have
issues there too.? Your mileage will vary.
But the radio?connected to the easy digi is not showing
signs of receiving or transmitting any signal.
Not true... IMG_8427.jpg shows a pink line starting with "0L" which
is a sent RF packet? on Channel 0.? The "ig" means heard via
Internet "IGate".? Please see the Direwolf User Guide to understand
what all the text means.?? Wait longer and see if you hear other
packets.?? Connect your radio to antenna that's placed outside your
dwelling to lower any RF noise level and improve signal reception.?
If you don't see any received RF packets, check your audio output
level from the radio as well as the Rpi microphone RX gain level.
The Direwolf User Guide details this very well but you might check
out my guide for audio tuning as well:
???
There are other great guides out there on the Internet as well.

Hello Armando,
The CP2102 is the Hiletgo CP2102 from amazon.
Ok.. another Direwolf, Martin,? pointed out this other specific
Hiletgo USB device.? It seems that specific unit is more flexible
than most as it supports RS485 and thus uses DIP switches to
configure that but is overkill for this project but it should work
fine.? For connection from a Raspberry Pi to your Easy Digi, you
will want it to be in "USB to TTL" mode which means RS232 mode with
TTL logic levels (aka +5volts).? You can see a little diagram on
this Amazon link that shows the settings of the two DIP switches and
the one slider switch:
When I referred to the left side, I meant audio to pc

Ok.. as I've read from other user posts, the Direwolf configuration

you wire it like how this schematic is shown.

Please take heed on my previous email and the points made of using
inexpensive radios.? You should expect more negative results than
positive ones but it completely depends on the quality of your
specific radio and then all the other issues I highlighted.? From

When I referred to the left side, I meant audio to pc
section. The R1 and R3 i referred are from the easy digi which
is as follow as well:

Hello Armando,
A) I connected the audio to PC
to the mic section of the sabrent sound card, using the left
side of the stencil as ground.
What do you mean by "stencil"?? When you say "left side", do you
mean the "left audio channel"?? If so, that's correct, Direwolf
starts with the the left audio for Direwolf Channel 0.? The right
audio signal on that same audio card is then Channel 1 if you choose
to use that.
C) Connected a wire from the mic ground to the sleeve?
of the baofeng mic cable section.
D) Connected a wire from the
mic in, to the ring of the baofeng mic section.
Two things here:
?? 1) You have this backwards.? The "speaker" output on the Sabrent
audio device should to to the MIC input on the radio.? Please note
that on the radio microphone connection, there might be a DC voltage
offset.? If so, you might need to add a small decoupling capacitor
to remove that voltage.? The same needs to be checked and possible
fixed on the Sabrent microphone connection as well.
?? 2) The use of Baofeng and other inexpensive Chinese radios
probably will present you with all kinds of difficult issues.?
Please search the Direwolf email archives to see all of the problems
people faced and once they replaced the inexpensive radio with a
quality radio, ALL their issues went away.? The choice is yours but
if you stay with the inexpensive radios, there is nothing else that
can be done to help you make the setup work, be reliable, have
better decodes, etc. as it's a radio HW issue.
E) Connected a wire from the
audio output close to R3 to the tip of the baofeng speaker cable
F) Connected a wire from the
audio output close to R1 to the sleeve of the baofeng speaker
cable.
I don't understand what you mean by R3 or R1 but I assume this is on
the stencil.? Please provide a URL to view this.
for PTT I used a HIletgo CP2102 USB to TTL UART having
the switches configure for USB to RS232 where #1 id on and # 2 is
off and the switch below towards switch #2, and connected a wire
from GND, DTR, RTS to the easy digi respectively.
I have personally never seen a CP2102 serial adapter with DIP
switches and I don't see any here either:
.? Please provide a
URL that shows these switches.
Btw.. the use of an EasyDigi unit is only really needed for HF
radios to mitigate RFI issues.? While they still can be used for
slower rate packet radio, they WILL block higher performance modes
like 9600bps packet, VARA-FM, ARDOP, OpenData, etc.? If you plan on
using higher speed modes, you must remove the EasyDigi unit or
upgrade the isolation transformers on it to pass a wider audio
spectrum.
I also wrote the following line to direwolf config:
PTT /dev/ttyUSB0 DTR RTS
There have been known issues with the EasyDigi and PTT.? I believe
that configuring "DTR RTS" is correct here but please check the
Direwolf email list archives and confirm that how you have wired up
your EasyDigi is the same as what those other email threads
highlight and got working.
When I run direwolf, I start to
get errors and can not use the aprs.
This is most likely a configuration error.? Please paste in the
errors you're seeing and the group can try to help you out.

Re: Not receiving all APRS traffic
Thank you for your extensive reply :-)
?
It is a raw comparison between my OpenWebRX setup and this new setup with a Baofeng and Puxing. Puxing is actually doing a bit better than the Baofeng, but not perfect. The antennas for both setups are quite similar. I have also tried switching them to see if results change. I am using a Roccat juke soundcard. I will need to try with a better radio. I have both a Icom and yaesu mobile station, but I am missing a cable at the moment to be able to connect them.? I will keep experimenting :-)
