Why do you want to use a (apparently not cheap) ball nosed tapered
carbide cutter on a lathe? Surely it would be more sensible to get a bit
of HSS for your first tries with the lathe.

Heated bed leveling. Prusa I3 type printers. Geeetech, Anet.
A simple way to have consistent level beds.So very important in good bed adhesion.
I did not like the 4 x corner adjusters with springs and screws and the use of a paper shim between glass and nozzle,
IMHO opinion very "Heath Robinson" so I replaced with 4 x delrin risers individually accurately?faced to the 4 corner heights.
The DI checks parallelism across the whole of the glass by resting on the X axis rails.sliding along the rods, and also
moving the Y axis front to back.
Simple hook on hook off shoe. holding the DI. Dial Indicator.See photos.
If a X axis parallel adjustment is required and very rarely the 2 x Z axis steppers connected to the Z axis screws can be moved
a smidgen in disable mode to accommodate.
Note one photo shows the glass bed frosted, I bead blasted one side of the glass, excellent for ABS filament bed adhesion.
Use a standard clear Pyrex type glass for PLA.
Hope of interest.

I don?t recommend this approach for holding turning tools cutting metal, but for holding a dial indicator or in this instance, a?
concentric leveling tool, (IE Bar with a roller bearing on the end,) then frees up a steel tool holder for?
other real work. Cost to buy a QCTP steel holder about $20, cost to 3D print about 0.75 cents.
Hope of interest.

Re: New member's Conversion: Sherline Spectralight CNC Lathe #LATHES #CNC

Hi Tamra

Take a look at this link.

If you purchased a QCTP Quick change toolpost with holders from say LMS, at least one of the tool holders has a Vee base for holding?
these types of round shank tools.

There is a myriad of different round nose tools (diameters) to choose from.
2 flute round nose router bits can be used, but you would need a bar with a hole in it, not a big deal, but a designated QCTP
is IMHO the way to go, QCTP also allows you to change the c/line of the carbide tips to the center line of the lathe spindle.
Important.

Re: Belt drive conversion of a mini-mill #3D #MILLS #MODS

I would use ABS because of past experience. I have a Ryobi table top band saw that I had bought when I was newly setting up my hobby shop. I realized that it's blade speed was meant for cutting wood and was too high for metal. I was cutting aluminum but I was losing blades at a high rate. I made an ABS pully and replaced it which brought the blade speed down significantly. I now use bi-metal blades of 1/2" width on it and they typically last 12 months on average.?

Yes, I am familiar with the process involved. However, cutting keyways on a lathe is new to me and will try.

Re: Belt drive conversion of a mini-mill #3D #MILLS #MODS

Thanks. I like this idea. I saw a couple of videos already. I want to try. The main reason for 3D printed was because I have access to good printers and it is fun to make it differently than the usual methods.?

Re: Belt drive conversion of a mini-mill #3D #MILLS #MODS

I tend to agree with Cornelius, but it would be interesting to find out for certain. One of the weaker aspects of an FDM part is the bonding between layers. If you were to print the pulley flat it would be prone to separation with a vee belt, and I think heat from the friction of a running belt would cause trouble as well. If I were going to do it, I would use ABS at a minimum, but I think a nylon-based filament and a toothed (timing belt) system would be your best option.?

Re: Belt drive conversion of a mini-mill #3D #MILLS #MODS

It is very easy to cut an internal keyway on a lathe with just a boring bar and a single point cutter.?
Set it up on the toolpost , center it , and then do the cutting by moving the saddle in and out using the handwheel. Similar to a shaper.
After every stroke just advance the cutter incrementally . Once set up, the actual cutting is less than 5 minutes .?
I have cut numerous keyways this way . My biggest one was 1/4 " wide 1" in length, in steel.?
There are a Youtube videos on this method.

My opinion is that a pulley, 3d printed with a home 3d printer will not be strong enough.?

Belt drive conversion of a mini-mill #3D #MILLS #MODS

Guys

Has anyone made a belt drive conversion for a mini-mill using 3D printed pulleys? This stay-at-home thing is making me restless and I am looking at a new project to keep me occupied. Yesterday my mini-mill started showing some internal gear related issue and that got me interested in this project. I have been looking at the document with drawings made by?Jerry Rollett in 2006, that has posted in the files section of mini-mills GIO group. Of course, Jerry talks about aluminum pulley that has a keyway. Well, I do not want to buy a broach to cut the keyway and then an arbor press to hold the broach, etc., all just to cut a keyway on a couple of pulleys.?

I thought a 3D printed pulley with a solid build (i.e., 100% infill) should give me a good amount of machining allowance to smoothen out imperfections on the vee groove surface and yet leave a pulley with full possible structural strength.??

Any suggestions??

Hi Tamra
Welcome to the forum.
I assume you are referring to 3D printing of a lid and base for holding some involute gear cutters.??
File creation approx 1 1/4 hours for both, I use Mastercam to develop the CAD and convert to STL.
I use Slic3r for the gcode generation.

1.5 and 2 refer to the Metric module of the gears.?
Imperial commonly known as the DP, diametrical pitch.or basically the size of the gear.
20 DP being very common with a pressure angle of 14 1/2 degrees.
For comparison, a? #1 module is equal to 25.4 DP.? a # 2 is 12.7 DP. pressure angle 20 degrees.
If you have a passion for making your own gears, we can help you start on this forum.

Re: New member's Conversion: Sherline Spectralight CNC Lathe #LATHES #CNC

Do you have a boring bar toolholder for your lathe? That and possibly some sleeve collets should let you mount a router bit in your lathe. I put an AXA clone Quick-Change tool Post (QCTP) on my Atlas TH42 lathe. It would be FAR too larger for your Sherline, but there are similar toolposts that will fit the Sherline. Sherline sells a QCTP, but it's a bit pricey. https://www.sherline.com/product/2250-quick-change-tool-post-and-three-holders/ The boring bar tool holder is the one on the left in the photo. LIttle machine shop has an OXA toolpost that will fit your lathe, as well. https://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=4039&category=-419988835 and it's considerably cheaper than the Sherline. With your lathes and mill, you should be able to make your own, if you want to, as well. http://www.toolsandmods.com/lathe/mini-lathe-qctp
