Hi John,

?

Hello, I will not yet contribute to much. I mainly will read and try to follow discussions.

Best regards,

All I am asking is just a "hello" from forum members of 260+?

Nothing more or nothing less, if members?cannot be bothered to respond with a simple "hello"?

then they have either passed on, or have not been interested in any of the large range of digitalhobbyist topics.

I do not think there is a more diversified forum for digital hobbyists than this one.?

The last meaningful post was by me in April 2021,?we were?receiving over 50 posts per month in?the?heyday

and I do not think blaming the?Covid pandemic has any relevance,?in fact most of us being in some kind of?

"Lockdown" over the past year should have meant possibly more time on our hands to be hobbyists. and

hit the?computer keyboard with questions and answers.

Gene, you have responded "fantastic", and I appreciate it very much.

I am just trying to get a reality check on whether we continue with the forum or it goes the way?

many other forum groups go and that is down the pan through?apathy ?

It would be a pity to pull the plug, I do not want to do this, but again just a simple hello, or even suggestions on how

to improve this forum or anything.??

All?the best to fellow hobbyists.

To be honest, this sounds rather outrageous to me. Many internet forums or discussion groups are owned/operated by a single individual or a small group,
so it's natural that some of them will enforce some kind of rules that make sense to them. These rules are usually clearly listed when you register on the forum.
But so far I haven't participated in an internet community where you are suddenly told that not posting will get you kicked out.

I wish JimJohn was just grumpy, and didn't really mean it?

Re: Offlist -- RE: [digitalhobbyist] New Mill and CNC Conversion #MILLS #CNC

I am of two minds about this. In Johns defense, GIO has moved to a per-member charge to all new groups. New free groups can have up tp 100 members, IIRC, and remain free. At 101, they start charging a small fee, though I don't remember off-had if is per member or per new member, in addition to the monthly or annual charge. It steeply increases the cost of a group.?

OTH, I am really only remotely interested in CNC.y real interest is in learning the manual machines I have acquired, and some supplemental 3D printing.?

Older groups like my Metal-Shapers-and-planers group, with 3400 members would be several hundred dollars a month if they weren't grandfathered. Since this is a hobby for me, It would likely get us shut down, and makes starting a new group cost prohibitive.

And I will no longer be able to upgrade any of my smaller groups.?

I seldom post except to answer questions I can look up answers to, or know off the top of my head, and for CNC stuff that ain't much. So I'm another who probably shouldn't be here.

Re: Offlist -- RE: [digitalhobbyist] New Mill and CNC Conversion #MILLS #CNC

John,

I guess, then, that you didn't literally mean saying hello every 30 days :)
I think frequency of messages will come and go, as ocean tide.
As long as (new) people interested in these things will have ways to find a way to this group,
they will sign up and ask questions, or propose their own topics.
If I remember correctly, I was referred to the group by another member, I think it was Ralph.
Don't know how other people find out about it, and decide to sign up.
If anything, the quite general and all-encompassing name might be making it more difficult for people to understand what the group is about? I don't really know what to suggest as an improvement, though.
Perhaps the group just needs new blood, people with interests in these topics and enough time (and lack of excuse-making) to make some projects and post about them. How to find and attract this new blood? I guess making some projects, and writing blog posts / making youtube videos about them, get them noticed by hackaday etc. All with a link to the group.

Cheers
Gene

Guess I will say hello then. I am looking to get into the hobby and enjoy learning different perspectives.? My guess is there are quite a few like me who are trying to garner some education until time/money becomes available.?

Thanks,

Look for "reference mark every 50mm" or "quadrature with index" and an R pin?on the connector pin out. When I bought my scales the documentation showed a 'R' pin but I hadn't known enough to order that option. (The ebay seller had something in the listing about letting them know if you wanted the 'R' option.)

I have silently been a member of this group (never before today commented) because I can not contribute or even comment intelligently due to being 2" from being homeless due to a large tree and unscrupulous contractor.

I had hoped to be able to continue to try to learn something new from this group, but if I must be cut, so be it, you are the boss.

Good luck with your decision(s).

I came here as a newbie, having very little experience with milling or CNC, so I have no reason to post often, but I read a lot.? If posting ever 30 days is a requirement, then you can unsubscribe me, because I promise I won't post very often.? I've managed many groups, and been on many more, and never heard of such a requirement.? You'll be losing a lot of learners, but I suppose that doesn't matter.? Good way to let a group stagnate, as the same posters post the same info to each other.

John, someone in the Digital Hobbyist Group told you to shut up?

I remember you had some conversations with Charlie when you first joined but I do not remember anyone telling you to shut up.

I joined the group to see if it could generate some interest in me doing CNC and CAD. I am a retired ET with more than 36 years of electronics background. I put together an all manual machine shop when I retired 15 years ago. I purposely avoided anything to do with electronics as I am burned out on it. I even built the shumatech DRO350...what a shitshow that turned out to be. Poor design with lots of noise issues. Even down to getting the polarity wrong so you have to use batteries with the scales...Frustrations I don't need. So, I bought the DRO 550 as it was supposed to be excellent and a huge improvement...then people started using them and all the glitches started falling out. Fortunately I hadn't bought glass scales yet and all the parts are still in the box.
So I will quit lurking and go elsewhere.

Thanks John,
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? I’m actually in a following phase just now ( and it’s too cold in the workshop at the moment) I’ve worked for years trying to get the crossdrive on my Boxford automated. I have just completed that task. So all of those projects that needed that to be done with it are now waiting! So an ER40 collet chuck is next up now that I can cut an accurate taper and do the 1 mm thread. it’s always a question is lathe conversation an enabler or an end ?

John, are you sure about that? I have had a long stretch of no post in all of the forums I subscribe to
and have not been dropped out of any of them.

Of course in thinking about it I was dropped out of a Facebook group, without any warning or mention.
But none of the GroupIO groups.

So just to make sure I do not get dropped I am posting this :-)
