All I am asking is just a "hello" from forum members of 260+?

Nothing more or nothing less, if members?cannot be bothered to respond with a simple "hello"?

then they have either passed on, or have not been interested in any of the large range of digitalhobbyist topics.

I do not think there is a more diversified forum for digital hobbyists than this one.?

The last meaningful post was by me in April 2021,?we were?receiving over 50 posts per month in?the?heyday

and I do not think blaming the?Covid pandemic has any relevance,?in fact most of us being in some kind of?

"Lockdown" over the past year should have meant possibly more time on our hands to be hobbyists. and

hit the?computer keyboard with questions and answers.

Gene, you have responded "fantastic", and I appreciate it very much.

I am just trying to get a reality check on whether we continue with the forum or it goes the way?

many other forum groups go and that is down the pan through?apathy ?

It would be a pity to pull the plug, I do not want to do this, but again just a simple hello, or even suggestions on how

to improve this forum or anything.??

All?the best to fellow hobbyists.

Just because that is YOUR experience, does not make it everyone¡¯s experience. {And yes a realize you are not exactly saying that it is}

Personally, I was considered ¡°essential¡± and as a result had 0 ¡°down¡± time due to covid, AND have had both knees replaced (one at a time) during the pandemic.

I have had almost 0 shop time since it started.

?

On the other hand, I think you are somewhat correct, in what I believe to be your intent.

A forum like this withers and dies if there are no relevant posts, but a flood of ¡°hello¡± every X days ?would not really stop that.

Such posts are like weeds in the garden, but at least they are not spam and scam.

Gene I am so glad you replied, I 'd hate to lose you from any of our mutual groups.

Jim I would also be very interested in your ball screw conversions, especially the mechanical doings.

I have instigated lots of long winded, but interesting for me, discussions in the past.
I will resume once I am done with the garden and household construction projects including?a new roof.

I have a long list of things I need/want to do.

Starting with GRBL, anybody know GRBL and interested in a project? I am "thinking" of using GRBL to turn ball ends and concave ends on my lathe.

I know the last version of Oleg's ELS does convex and concave but that version is still in Russian,

I still have not got Z working on my lathe yet, I do have the motor mounted?and am still thinking about how to do X.

I read the "30 day" thing as well.

I'm a lurker. I can't post anything meaningful because I'm not there yet. I'm slowly working through the long list of projects after making major life changes (retiring, farm changes, family health, grandkids).

I also am the owner of 21 groups ranging from 500 down to 2. I can tell you that 95% of the activities in a group are from less than 10% of the members. Everyone on the group gets what they want.

I am of two minds about this. In Johns defense, GIO has moved to a per-member charge to all new groups. New free groups can have up tp 100 members, IIRC, and remain free. At 101, they start charging a small fee, though I don't remember off-had if is per member or per new member, in addition to the monthly or annual charge. It steeply increases the cost of a group.?

OTH, I am really only remotely interested in CNC.y real interest is in learning the manual machines I have acquired, and some supplemental 3D printing.?

Older groups like my Metal-Shapers-and-planers group, with 3400 members would be several hundred dollars a month if they weren't grandfathered. Since this is a hobby for me, It would likely get us shut down, and makes starting a new group cost prohibitive.

And I will no longer be able to upgrade any of my smaller groups.?

I seldom post except to answer questions I can look up answers to, or know off the top of my head, and for CNC stuff that ain't much. So I'm another who probably shouldn't be here.

"Lockdown" over the past year should have meant possibly more time on our hands to be hobbyists. and

I remember that "incident" very well. It did strike me as very peculiar, to use a polite term.
It was John L in October 2020 in the "No compound" thread - a topic started by yourself :)

I found and joined this group because the topics being discussed are interesting to me.
I am just learning from the knowledgeable people here and very rarely comment,
because I don't feel like I have something valuable to contribute.

Now I'm hearing that 30 days without posting will get one kicked out from this group.
To be honest, this sounds rather outrageous to me. Many internet forums or discussion groups are owned/operated by a single individual or a small group,
so it's natural that some of them will enforce some kind of rules that make sense to them. These rules are usually clearly listed when you register on the forum.
But so far I haven't participated in an internet community where you are suddenly told that not posting will get you kicked out.

I wish JimJohn was just grumpy, and didn't really mean it?

Wish everyone well, in case I will be kicked out after this post :)
Cheers
Gene

Ralph,

I am going by John's original post, which said:

30 days of no posts even hello will drop you out.

Perhaps he will reconsider...

Re: New Mill and CNC Conversion #MILLS #CNC

This was the first I had heard of the 30 day rule, and I agree with Charlie I would not like to see "Hello" posts most days.

Phill?

Re: New Mill and CNC Conversion #MILLS #CNC

Is there a? "30-day post or out" policy for Digital Hobbyists?

John had not replied to my post.

John,

First, while I greatly respect you, your work, and your work ethic, everyone has different priorities on how they use their time here on this Earth. To say that any priorities not in line with yours are "all just excuses to me" fails to recognize that we are all responsible for making our own decisions.

Second, you and I have discussed lurkers and the large percentage of members in every group that do not post regularly. These members derive a great deal of benefit just from reading the posts and discussions and should remain members. I belong to numerous groups, and have learned much simply by lurking. I don't have time to keep a schedule of when I must post to each to remain a member! I also don't want to receive a daily messages from Digital Hobbyist consisting primarily of "Hi", "Hello", "Howdy", etc. I disagree strongly with this "30-day post or out" policy, and, confirming my earlier email to you, I therefore resign as a moderator for Digital Hobbyist.
