Milestone 312 Ace vs VR Trek

Some facts and user experiences are now beginning to filter through about the latest Wi-Fi equipped Milestone 312 Ace player and Wi-Fi radio.? Player and radio Radio and playing audio files and books are its prime features although it will do more with added colour identifier modules and one or two other things which I think are paid-for extras.? So here's what I have heard so far and some detailed questions to folow.

So far I have heard via Access-UK list of its more flexible file system without the need to place books and other audio files in specific places, although the VR Trek's insistance on doing this has never been a chaw for me.

Its smallness is a selling point being, we are told, little bigger than a credit card if a little thicker.? I will say that being able "to put it in a shirt pocket" has never held great apeal for me;? no doubt that's just a personal thing.

I do wish though that this latest Milestone had acquired a Podcast player but alas! it will be some time before that appears.? It is nice to have more than skeletel information on this Bones Player from Germany.

Now, I should no doubt try writing to Milestone on the Podcast player suggestion but more important to me at the moment is, Will this Milestone handle BBC High Quality internet streams?? I am hoping that Adrian who's on this list can try these out - which wil work only within the UK.

I wonder if these rather long and convoluted URLs are actually from a third party site, but I know there is at least one person here who might answer this, and even know of a convenient place where (all) BBC high quality radio feeds are listed.? I in fact got to the feeds above by looking at:

I looked at the answer for accessing BBC Radio Sheffield and then modified that for the other two stations above.

It could well be these feeds are used by Smart Speakers to access radio via BBC Sounds.? They address the annoyance I have not being able to access BBC local radio on the VR Trek using the lowwer quality 128 kbs streams,?? denied to us until Sunday due to the Winter Olympics.? Pretty The HQ streams will not get around accessing local sport due to rights issues.? Sure the Trek will not handle the HQ feeds.

Its looking like the Milestone may become the favoured internet radio and player for vI people in the UK.? the dealer selling it here has been misleading in implying the trek does not do Blue Tooth (and) Wi-Fi, which we all know isn't true.

so, any thoughts?? Anyone hearing of a Trek replacement

Ray.

Re: Stream and trek and playing higher quality broadcast streams

Hi Ray

I am not sure what message you are referring to regarding bbc streams but a good alternative to the stream for radio is the evo 10, it has radio capabilities, the voice is ivona I think, I know it is Amy and that is ivona. Also the recordings are very clear. I have ordered my milestone but it is on back order, it is a bit expensive but Steve nutt played it to me over the phone once I had ordered it and it sounded good, the good thing about it is that it is both bluetooth and wifi and is being up-dated all the time. When I get it finally I'll let you know what it is like. For me it is going to replace my streams because I can't see hw up-grading the stream mark 2 any time soon and I don't need the vr treck.

Regards

Adrien

Subject: [vrstreamuk] Stream and trek and playing higher quality broadcast streams

Here's the thing. Again we in the UK using the vR Stream and Trek are being denied access to BBC local radio streams because of the rights issues attaching to the Winter olympics, with all stations being cursed with the dreaded repeat announcement.announcement. So I wil eventually go on to talk about alternatives to the Stream/Trek.

I do not as yet much want to go for an Amazon speaker and join submit just yet to the BBC's urging for us to go to BBC Sounds for everything. So what about alternatives?

Adrian mentioned the Milestone player which has been updated and wonder if he or anyone knows of it capabilities on the radio streaming side? Until now there has been the Sonata player issued by Wireless for B Blind, but support for that is being ended later this year. So, apart from playing on a smart phone or your computer there appears to be no alternative to the HW players - unless that one imported from China by one dealer is really a going concern. So, my agonisingly long message on this is really a plea for an alternative to put me out of my agony imposed by the joint efforts of Humanware and digital rights issues politics.

Ray.

the playlists I use are all for the lower quality 128k streams which the VR players handle. Pele West who's on here believes the HW players wil not handle the higher quality streams which I believe the Amazon speakers use but these streams are subject to a longer delay. For me that could be tollerated if only the Humanware players would handle them. So, what chance an updated player will handle those streams? We don't know of course, and HW is, as usual not forthcoming with anything about the latest player and what it will do. Indeed, that is if it will still be a player as a replacement could concentrate on the mobility aspect of the Trek.

Hello Adrien,

I have the Milestone 112 Ace which is the recorder. You can either have all recordings stored in one folder or have them in five folders which you can name for storing information, so you can name the folders according to what is stored, e.g. Calendar, Notes, etc. You can also have clock software installed so you know what the time is. The Milestone is credit-sized with five buttons on the front face and one button on the top-left end. You can either record using the internal microphone or use a stereo external microphone. |It is perfect for making quick notes.

The Milestone 112 Ace is the basic model. The Milestone 212 Ace contains a book reader and music player, the Milestone 312 Ace is the all-rounder and contains TTS software for reading text files.

For more information and where to purchase, visit:

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Re: help with updating my VRS

Hi Ray

Yes I think it'll be good if they could bring out a new vr stream, the treck is out of my reach but a stream replacement because I don't need the treck, why pay for one? But the stream is always going to be popular. Have never seen a milestone, what are they like?

Just to say a Thank You to Henry for the link to the Trek download page.Just a few thoughts on the Trek and it competitors.

With cSun coming up soon I wonder if we are about to get news of a
replacement for the Trek? Competition in the field of accessible
players is a little keener now with the Wi-Fi equipped version of the
Milestone now at last coming into the UK. then there is the Blind
Classic 2 phone which has a decent internet player and now a podcast app
too - something the Milestone still appears to lack.

Hi Henry and all. Glad you got sorted with the update. Can you or anyone give a direct URL to the Humanware download for the latest update? Its much quicker to do it that way than to let the Trek download the updates.

I am guessing though that this could well be the last update the Trek will get, except perhaps for a map update which seems to arive usually in the early spring.

Hi Henry,
Once you've inserted the SD card into your VRS with the update file on the
root, power the Stream on and the rest of the process completes
automatically. You'll hear the percentages as the Stream updates until the
machine powers off and that's it. You should then be up to date.

Cheers and good luck,
Sandra.

Connect the stream to usb or mains, which ever stream you have, put the sd card in stream and power it on, it should start the up-date process strait away and you will have to press confirm a few times. Hope that helps.

Hi all,

Over the past few weeks, I’ve encountered a rather strange occurrence when for some odd reason, my Victor Stream will switch itself off without any warning.

The other day, I was listening to an internet radio recording I’d made, when the Stream suddenly went silent and on checking, the device was switched off. There was no warning, or any announcement to say Victor stream powering off, as it does when the battery is empty.

Yesterday morning, I was out and so left the Stream recording but on my return, I noticed no sound and discovered that the Stream had turned off.

On playing back my recording from yesterday morning, I noticed that during the final minute or so ,the audio jumps a bit, before the recording ended ,with the usual “end of recording” message.

In all instances when the Stream has mysteriously turned off, the unit had been charged and yesterday, it was plugged in and pretty much fully charged.

Re: Victor Stream switching off

Hi Hans

That is quite a difficult question as I have a number of SD cards containing music that I use in my stream, and another one for books. Most of them are Sandisk or Kingston.

The last card I bought was a Sandisk 128GB Class 10 SDHC card. Before I could use it in the stream I had to format it as FAT32.

I believe some people have used 256Gb cards in their streams, but I have not done this yet.

Pele
