Hey all: Just getting setup for d-rats. I am using the 51a radio, using the "orange" RT Systems cable. I have the following set correctly in my radio; GPS TX Mode = OFF, GPS Auto TX = OFF, DV Data TX = Auto and baud set to 9600. I have set up (in d-rats) the 51a radio in the Preferences/Radio tab using Com 3 and baud of 9600. When I start d-rats it shows connected to the 51a. However I cannot get it to transmit when I ping a callsign (ping station feature) or use ping "all stations" to start a conversation. The 51a is selected in the dropdown selection of radios to use, left of send line/button. I realize other station(s) has to be in the "stations" list in order to chat with them first. So where am I going wrong and how do I get other stations propagated into the "stations" section and why will my radio not key up? Thx n5gqb Sly

Sly:
I tested my 51A with the following settings and it worked with D-RATS.
?
ID-31A/51A
|
9600
|
GPS>GPS TX Mode = OFF, GPS>GPS Auto TX = OFF, GPS>GPS Set>GPS Out = OFF, DV Set>DV Data TX = Auto
|
?
Don’t forget to set the right COM port.? Use Device Manager to locate it.? Also, make sure only your radio entry is checked in Preferences>Radio.
?
By the way, I have used my 51A for packet and soundcard modes with my KPC-3+? and SignaLink USB with some special cables I made up.
?
Hope this helps.

OK thanks John for the reply. After comparing my radio settings to yours looks like I was unaware that the "GPS OUT" setting has to be set to OFF, mine was ON. Everything else was verbatim. I had followed a setup guide posted several months ago on this group for the 51 and GPS OUT setting was not mentioned thus missed by me. Not sure if ON is factory default but I don't ever remember changing it. Anyway it works now. Thx Sly n5gqb

Sly, one more thing that puzzled me yesterday morning as I was trying to confirm my settings for you.? I had one instance of D-RATS running on my PC connected
to the 51 (the radio link).? I had another running on the Internet on another PC.? I have a Ratflector that bridges Internet to RF.
?
I could see the 51 keying up, but would not receive data from my other station.? I could ping from either and the station lists would update, but no chat data
would pass between.
?
I fionally realized that I had both stations with the same callsign in the D=RATS preferences.? I added a -5 to my 51 station and everything worked.? I learned
a lesson that it’s okay to run the same callsign on all of MY d-RATS stations as long as I’m not using more than one.? Most likely, I would be putting a tactical call in the Preferences when actually operating.

Hi, this is Jim K6NRA.? Helping a friend out who has a ID-51A Plus. We have not been able to get the radio to xmit, as the previous discussion indicated.? I know I have the correct com port, that is, device manager matches the one used in radio preferences.? Also the cable I've been using works fine for radio programing, so I know the cable is good.? I even purchased the software from RT Systems, a lot more user-friendly than the Icom s/w.
I've checked my radio settings as per this thread, the radio via the computer will not key up.
If I use DRATS with my ICOM 92AD, works fine, of course, I had to use the special Icom cable with usb-rs-232 adaptor, so I know everything on the computer side is good.
edit:? Previous sentence, DRATS works fine with my ICOM 92AD on SIMPLEX, turns out it does not work through our local DSTAR repeater (2m).? After doing many factory resets, making tiny changes in the radio programming, still having problems with the 92. What was found, some operator's radios signals (voice or data) will make it through the repeater but not everybody's radios will make it to my 92.? I'm afraid I've been barking up the wrong tree here, now believing the problem has to be with the other user's radio, in this case an Icom 2820.? It's as though like analog, if the 2820 transmitted with a PL code and the repeater passed it, and thus the 92 opens up, vs, a 2820 not encoding the output with a pl code and thus the 92 not picking up the data.
I know DSTAR does not use PL codes (analog or digital), so what could be missing in the 2820 programming?? I know this is more of a DSTAR issue, not a D-RATS issue but by using D-RATS is how the problem was identified.? Just need the fix.??? -? Jim k6nra
Is there such a thing as setting the radio back to factory defaults, as I don't know what settings the owner did. - solved
I've got a full head of hair right now, but it isn't going to last long as I keep pulling it out, I've spent lots of hours on this thing.? The only thing I didn't do is look at the RS-232 voltages going into and from the radio. - problem solved

Check your usb to rs233 adapter drivers. Some if those, especially ones from Amazon and ebay come from China and require a driver from the company that produced them. Windows will recognize them as an adapter dongle but load a default driver that does not work with the chip set in the dongle. Just a thought from past personel experience. Below is the reset instructions for the 51a.

Jeff:
I just reset the radio, I'm going to install a few DSTAR channels and then re-try DRATS.
I know that not all usb to rs-232 adapters are not created equal.? I normally use the ones using the profific <sp?> chip.? What I need is what we used to call a christmas tree, a small LED indicator device you place in-line with the rs-232, so you can see the lights flashing while sending data.
I don't have any reason to believe I have a cable problem, as I can read/write the radio using the ICOM s/w.??
I'm going to use RT System to write just a few channels back to the radio and see if that clears the problem.
Thanks for the replay -? Jim

Good deal. Maybe you can review the data in the program software before loading it back to the radio and spot the error. Glad you got it going.

This is what doesn't work, something in the programing that the owner did, exactly what's wrong, who knows. With the owner's data, I went through every settings menu and set the contents to factory, unless I had to fill my own info in, ham call, etc.
What does work, factory reset, blew everything away.? Using RT Systems s/w, filled out D-star settings menu. Used D-STAR calculator and created four channels, talk, echo, status, and unlink, all used with a local DSTAR repeater.
If I give the radio back to the owner, it will work with DRATS.? Since the radio is backed up, perhaps the owner could restore a little at a time, it's still unknown where the problem is, could even be a glitch in the data file.
I certainly cannot explain what is going on here, but at least the radio is not defective.

I've got a full head of hair right now, but it isn't going to last long as I keep pulling it out, I've spent lots of hours on this thing.? The only thing I didn't do is look at the RS-232 voltages going into and from the radio.

Mission Accomplished!
I was unable to come to a conclusion as to the actual cause of the problem.
After doing a factory reset and restoring all of the memory channels and other settings, to my knowledge the radio is fully operational.
I wish I had a better answer, but it's done!
Thanks to everyone who offered me ideas.

It sounds more that DV Data TX (it may not be the exact name) was
not set to Auto in the radio setup.
If not set, the radios expect a PTT to send the data.

Problem on the IC92AD solved.? I had no issues using voice on DSTAR.? My problems were with D-rats.? I've used several models of radios with D-Rats and usually communicating to the radio at 9600 baud.? For some reason I could xmit with the 92 but the data never got xmitted correctly.? Then I realized it had to be at 38.5kb, and bingo, the data went out and was readable.?? The other issue, I would not know that it worked unless I had a buddy on the air with me who could send and receive.? To make it more convenient? I borrowed a radio (2820) and a laptop from SHARP (sacramento sheriff's amateur radio program) so I could look across the room and see my progress.? Simplex worked just fine.? I then went to utilize our nearby DSTAR repeater, found that my 92 would send out ok? and the 2820 picked me up.? But, when a msg went out via the 2820, nothing.? After many hours of reprogramming, etc, I found the 2820 was never setup for a repeater.? Once I realized that, stopped spinning my wheels.
Bottom line, the 92 now works just fine.
now I'm back to touching up my ID5100.? I don't know the maximum baud rate I can send to it with, I'm trying to find that info.
So, we can close this trouble ticket, thanks everyone for helping out.? Now I can get back to our monthly DSTAR nets over RF.

It’s likely one setting missing. If you follow the settings in
/g/d-rats/files/D-RATS%20Radio%20Settings.pdf from the D-RATS group, it will work.
