Re: Is AMBE chip needed for D-RATS?
There are a LOT of GMSK boards out there though a lot of them are moving away from plain RS232 serial ports just because no one has them anymore. Anyway, maybe the Moencomm boards will work:

From the computer API view, it seems to look like a repeater node, so by running a ratflector on that computer linked to that software, an unmodified d-rats client should just work. The site is back up. They had a power failure over the weekend. Unfortunately some of the products that would be of direct interest for this project do not appear to be available in kit or assembled form. is a GMSK modem with a standard serial port. Should be easy to write a program to translate from a ratflector i/o to what gets transferred to and from the radio. I can not find this product for sale though. Full schematics and such are available on the site. is a re-implementation of the original GMSK node adapter. One modification of interest here is that it presents an RS-232 data port that outputs the same data stream as is available from the serial port of an Icom D-star radio. I also can not find this product for sale either. Full schematices, etc are available on the site. What they do have is the mini-hotspot, but that is missing the serial port and apparently needs a special USB driver, which limits it to Linux and Windows at the present time. I can find other versions of that mini-hotspot for sale in the same price range. It seems that if I go the hardware route, a Raspberry Pi based solution is currently looking the most attractive. 开云体育Hello John, Yes, this looks like a great place to start and considering there are Rpi & BeagleBone images available, that might be a super easy way to try.? The thing you'll need to figure out is how get D-Rats to use the available Dstar stack.? I suppose two serial ports could be used but there must be a way to interconnect them virtually. --David |

开云体育Hello John, ? That's a copy of Tom Sailer's Soundmodem.? It was impressive for it's day and it's diagnostic views are still unsurpassed in some respects but it hasn't been supported for years and there are several alternatives out there now that are VASTLY superior for actual decoding. Here is a quick breakdown of what's out there: ?? But like you said, none of these do GMSK
Yes, that looks pretty good for a software based GMSK modem!
USB drivers?? I don't think you've stated your question properly.? You're looking for a full Dstar protocol stack to run over this GMSK modem and that looks to be here: ??

I definitely will try the software route. I am looking for Linux based operation. I found: and . I do not see any support for GMSK there. The looks more promising. Even though it targets a Raspberry pi, I should be able to also use an x86 linux system instead. The thing there is that I do not want to use the c2 stuff. I have subscribed to the gmsk_dv_node list and asked about the USB drivers. No response so far. I am also looking at the freestar * solutions. There site only seems to have ISO downloads. It seems to me that the radio/computer portion should be similar to a repeater setup, but only repeating messages from a local ratflector instead of over the air. I am finding a lot of dead links in this search. Regards, -John |
Re: MAPPING SOFTWARE/STATIC MAPS
kk4lac@rocketmail.com
Interesting you should bring this up this morning. I started the Map Download Utility about an hour ago, entered the lat long info, set it to a 10.6 mile diameter, hit start and it's sat at "Downloading (0%)" ever since. So...questions:
1. I assume this is downloading over the internet connection - and not waiting for me to start D-Rats and connect to something else. 2. I note that for lat/long you must enter the degrees followed by a space (it inserts the degree symbol), then enter minutes followed by a space (it inserts the ' symbol), and finally seconds followed by a space and enter the " symbol. Could this NOT be downloading because of an unreported error in the way I've entered the lat/long information? 3. Should I have expectations for download times longer than the last hour or so sitting at 0%? Thanks! Bob KK4LAC |

As I had left the QSTs on before with no one mentioning that they were excessive or disrupted, I did not realize the impact. I was not aware that the location report could be used as an alternative. I do not know if the ISP kill timer will allow 10 minutes of idle. I will have to test that out. Regards, -John |
Re: Is AMBE chip needed for D-RATS?
Hello John,
You're correct in that the DVSI AMBE chip is only needed for the Vocoder section but it wouldn't surprise me if many implementations EXPECT to see the AMBE chip there even if it's not being used. The DIY market for Dstar is very robust and with various GMSK modem boards out there now (even all SW versions too). I don't see why this wouldn't work but you might need to work with the GMSK modem vendor to get the SW to work properly. --David KI6ZHD |
Excessive QSTs
I have a noticed an increase in the amount of un-necessary QSTs on the Public Ratflector. It has come to the point where it is difficult to have a conversation with someone without being interrupted by unattended stations sending bulletins that have no value. I have resorted to filtering them out in order to keep my screen clear. If you need to keep your internet connection alive, simply send a location report every ten minutes. It will not print any text in the chat window. Please keep all other QSTs to a minimum (I don't need to know the temperature at your location). If your station is unattended, please set your status to Unattended using the selection box in the lower-right corner below the Stations list. Thank you in advance, de Patrick (N3TSZ) |
Is AMBE chip needed for D-RATS?
From what I can see, the AMBE chip is only needed for Digital Voice mode.
If that is really the case, it should be possible to build a D-RATs/Digital mode adapter for existing FM gear usign a GMSK modem. I have not found any information on the Wild Wild Web for such a project though. Any one know of any? Regards, -John |
Re: MAPPING SOFTWARE/STATIC MAPS
I believe D-RATS has an excellent built in mapping capability that is specifically designed to be used without a network connection.? There is a utility program, d-rats_mapdownloader.exe, located in the same directory as the executable for D-RATS itself, that will download map tiles for a selected geographic area.? Once downloaded D-RATS will use the cached tiles.? I am not a real wizard at all this, but did manage to download maps for the local area here and create overlays for points of interest such as trailheads.? The maps are basic street maps, not topographic maps.? Perhaps a real expert could tell us how to get topo maps loaded.

MAPPING SOFTWARE/STATIC MAPS
Hello: I wondered what software or static maps people are using for when WiFi is not available. ?I am aware that with Google maps you can download a map of the area you are in assuming there is cell coverage/availability or wifi. ?But in an emergency that won't be likely. Has anyone found a mapping software that will work with D-RATS? ?It would be nice to utilize this for both the ID-51A & ID-5100A radios. Thank you for your assistance. 73 Glen KB1DNI |

D-Rats ID-51A and RT Systems Cable
For anyone else out there pulling their hair out trying to make D-Rats key the transmitter, I have (finally) had some success with this hardware: ID-51A (original flavor), RTS-05 cable (orange), Windows 8.1 netbook, latest build of D-Rats. ?As otherwise noted, you have to carefully shut off all the GPS stuff on the radio. Apparently, GPS data and other data are trying to use the same limited slot in DV mode. There are charts on where to shut off GPS (at least 3 settings need to be "off"). Also I saw a note that "power save" has to be "off". Mine was "Auto-short". I turned it off and it works---but not 100% sure this was really necessary. Now for the new part----using the HT and the RT systems cable, I was very frustrated that the radio seemed to transmit once (when D-Rats connected), then never again. Eventually, I found that for some reason the Comm port was being disconnected on the netbook.?I tried a few different scenarios (different computer, different cable, etc.) and always the same thing using the ID-51. Until I decided to reduce the transmit power on the radio. Only on Mid or High power on the ID-51 did it continue to disconnect the comm port. Lower power worked fine. What I believe is happening is the HT, using the rubber duck, is pump RF into the RT Systems cable and causing the comm port to shut down (I could unplug and re-plug the cable and it would work again---for one transmission). I am going to put a couple ferrite beads on the RT Systems cable and report back how that works (if it actually does anything positive). Moving the radio or antenna away from the computer seems to help. Reducing the transmit power definitely helps. I notice the $70 dollar iCom cable has 2 ferrite beads included. I suspect iCom may have seen the same thing. Just some info if anyone like me was trying to make a "go-kit" with the HT and a netbook or laptop and D-Rats. 73, KC3BLF |
