Apple TV 4K, Gen.3 (Latest) video issue
Hi All,
I've been working remotely with a client that is having an issue with playback or *SOME* content on Netflix and A-Prime. Though many titles play fine, some titles will start to play but only provide audio and a black screen with subtitles. Very weird... This new Apple TV was put into an older media room (~10 years old), about a month ago and has not seen much/any use until now. I've insured that the unit is on the latest tvOS (v16.2 I think) and hard-booted it.? no fix... Because of the age of the AVR/Projector, the Apple TV is set to 720p/SDR. Anyone else seeing issues like this?? TIA! |
开云体育Hi, i think it?s an HDCP issue. The ATV plays out HDCP 2.2 content and i would think the projector (and/or AVR) will only support HDCP 1.4. This can be fixed by using an HDFury Linker. ? Cheers, Thorsten ? ? Von: [email protected] <[email protected]> Im Auftrag von ckangis ? Hi All, |
Thanks guys!
The AVR and projector definitely only support v1.4, they're 10 years old!!...:) Limbert, do you think that even if the Apple TV is set to 720p/SDR, that it would still try to play? the content at a higher level? also, when we get a black screen, sometimes we still see subtitles...:( Thorsten, Thanks for the HD fury recommendation. that may be what I need....I just wish things would do what I tell them to do...:):):) |
If the Apple TV is configured for 720P/SDR, it should (will) not try to send higher resolutions and/or HDR. Geoff On Tue, Dec 27, 2022 at 11:21 AM ckangis <chris@...> wrote: Thanks guys! |
Geof is right, maybe there is something with the content, try to see if there are any differences in the format (4K HDR, HD, FULL HD)? of the content you are trying to reproduce, for example: 4K Movie = OK Full HD Movie = OK 4K HDR = OK 4K Dolby vision?= black screen Limbert On Tue, Dec 27, 2022 at 12:21 PM ckangis <chris@...> wrote: Thanks guys! |

Limbert, That's likely what is going on...But it shouldn't. It's one of my biggest pet peeves with the digital age...for various reasons, things beyond our control don't work right, and we are required to fix them even though we have no way to do it...:( |
I'm pretty confident that Apple has done a fairly good job of getting this functionality correct, meaning that "should" and "will" are interchangeable in this case.? They would have a lot of unhappy customers using AppleTV 4K models on 1080P or lesser displays if they screwed this up and the device was trying to send 4K or HDR to displays that can't handle it.? Is there anything between the AppleTV and the display in this case that could be messing with things?? The culprit could be an AVR or even Crestron DM gear sending the wrong EDID info back to the AppleTV. 开云体育I cannot get video on Prime Video “The Peripheral”, something went wrong message, but sometimes it is playing and I can get a brief flash on video that blanks but sound still works.? AppleTV 4K, Sony 950H, not sure about the 1M cable.? I ran through settings on ATV from 4K Dolby Vision down to 720P, none of them work.? Weird thing is that is the only show that has that problem, everything else seems to work just fine. ? From: <[email protected]> on behalf of Geoffrey Reynolds <greynlds@...> ? That sounds like a problem with the streaming app rather than the device itself. Geoff On Thu, Dec 29, 2022 at 1:11 PM MSTC <kol.mstc@...> wrote:

In my setup(~10y/o), ATV - Older Denon AVR? - Epson Projector.?
If the issues were device wide, i.e. No Video for anything, I'd say that this is my older setup, but since the problems only arise with certain content, I'm primarily blaming Apple/Services... 1. Even when I don't get what I'm expecting (cant watch movie), I still sometimes get a black screen WITH subtitles, which I see as video vs no video 2. If the ATV is set to 720p/SDR, it shouldn't try to deliver a different format. 3. If it is trying to deliver a different/unsupported format, why isn't it a universal issue, instead of an issue only with certain content...This seems to tell me that the issue is the ATV changing (or getting confused) the format based on the content. We're going to try factory defaulting the ATV to see if that resolves things. if these conditions still happen after that, I agree that it is likely an interaction between the ATV and the system. I'll take the blame when I do something stupid or ignorant, but on this I would still put the blame elsewhere... |
I don't think you're doing anything stupid or ignorant here.? In cases where you get a black screen with subtitles that are visible, the ATV clearly isn't sending 1080P / 4K / HDR to a device that can't handle those formats or you would be getting nothing at all on the screen.? The problem could be that some apps require a certain HDCP level for some content and the older display doesn't meet the requirements - the suggestion of adding an HDFury device into the mix could very likely solve that. IIRC, you're located reasonably near me.? I've got several HDFury devices around that I'm not currently using.? If you would like to try one or more of them out to see if they'll solve the problem, let me know.? IIRC, I have an Integral, Linker, Vertex, and Vertex2 - I would need to double check on the Vertex.? I also have a Maestro TX/RX pair, but I can't recommend it as I had lots of problems with it. 开云体育Hi, ? i had to hook up an old 1.4 projector while waiting for our final showroom device and wasn?t able to play anything with a ATV 4K connected to the system (Trinnov Altitude32 preprocessor, then madVR Envy video processor, then projector). I wasn?t able to get anything to work with the ATV, other than displaying that it?s not allowed due to HDCP issues. ? I tried everything from factory reset, buying a second one for cross-checking, going for fixed low resolution settings, etc. Nothing worked, except adding the HDFury Linker. ? Cheers, Thorsten ? I've seen the issue with AppleTV (and Roku as that goes) not streaming certain content in the past.?
Just had a case a few weeks ago where the Apple TV would have sound but no picture when streaming some Acorn programs -- the picture would appear at the beginning of the steam but very quickly go black.? No DM in this system in this case but there was a Denon receiver and a AVPRO HDMI video balun between the Apple TV and the TV.? My go to fix when this happens is to connect the AppleTV directly to the TV and use either Toslink or ARC to get sound back to the receiver.? The other solution I find that works is replace the balun with a Crestron DM-TX-xxxx and DM-RMC-4KZ-100-C balun system -- it is the only balun system that I have found that works consistently. Probably not a good solution in your case.? But I avoid putting a receiver or active HDMI cable or balun between the source and the TV at all cost -- just have had too many issues with having other devices in the HDMI path. |
