Re: [OT] Fiber Terms - What are you using?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

It seems that most of my dealers have determined it¡¯s more cost effective and less trouble/failure prone to sub out fiber (where used ¨C I¡¯m still surprised by how relatively rare it¡¯s been) to whomever¡¯s doing the Datacom install in the building.

?

They just pull and terminate the fiber to a standard fiber patch box (bolted to the wall) or panel (invariably the top space in the rack) certify the runs for optical loss/attenuation and the integrator uses off the shelf pre-fabricated patch cables to make the jump from that patch panel to the DM/network gear/Extron fiber products/etc.

The time has come when we need to start using fiber for DM, audio, and other video apps. I'm familiar with how to term fiber and the various methods, but I'm curious what products, connectors, term kits, etc you are all using.

?

I've been eyeing the Corning kit for their UniCam connectors which are pre-polished and terming these seems like a breeze and very fast. The kit is also relatively inexpensive although I realize connectors may cost more.

?

Crestron's kit is expensive and I see it is made by AFL.?

?

Also looking for experiences with various brand of single and multimode fiber cable. We generally use Belden or West Penn, although I'm only sort of satisfied with WP.?

?

Thanks for the input.

Re: Combinable / Divisible Rooms

There was a whole long thread on the topic but I'll restate my opinion here:

I haven't needed crosspoints in my 12 years of Crestron programming. Remember, you don't need different signals for "dvd power" on different touchpanels. No need for a buffer here, unless you need to track where the press came from. I pretty much have many touchpanels programmed, and only have tp1_ and tp2_ signals for things that NEED to be different, like page flips and some feedback. Otherwise, make them identical.

As far room combining, BSS BLU's have a GREAT room combine signal and logic. It even handles automixer gain references and such. Then from a processor, just recall room config presets.?

<RANT> I tried to do a split room design with a QM-MD7X2 with that unit handling audio. Our rep (and Crestron) insisted at the time we program this with System Builder. HUGE MISTAKE. SB was not cut out for that, and the bigger problem was they left out over 20 really important joins in the Crestron module used in SB so I couldn't control things I needed to. It never got fixed. They wanted me to do SB then fix it in SIMPL, but that's a one-way street. Not doing it.</RANT>

Re: Combinable / Divisible Rooms

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Divisible rooms are tied with voting systems as by far my favorite single type of systems to program [as long as the engineers haven¡¯t tried getting overly cute with it (e.g. 2 CODECs shared against any of 5 room sections in any combination with the attendant mess that becomes of AEC references, camera selection/routing, etc., etc. )]

If you have multiple processors, don't split up the logic, centralize it all in one program.? You'll thank me later.? Don't use crosspoints unless you're already comfortable with them, stick to what you know.? Buffers work fine at this scale.

Be prepared for them to change the room numbers and master rooms around on you, because if it hasn't already happened (and they haven't told you yet), it will.

At least the TP stuff will be a little easier these days with dynamic source lists and visibility joins on everything.

Good luck.? Divisible rooms are one of the places where control systems can really shine.

Determine which room will be the master/have the master logic when rooms are combined early. If it¡¯s a 3 way room, this is almost invariably the middle room for every scenario. Neil, Lincoln, Chip,

I figure you're top on the div-space list code gurus, but anyone with experience of conference centers with all areas needing background music and combining rooms without any sensors at all, I could use a pep talk before I dive into this one on my plate at the moment. 7 areas, 6 7" panels, a few video zones, but for the most part all audio with input audio plates and mics all around. Crestron lighting and some 232 or relay controlled shades in some rooms too.

Thinking of using XP's.

Since there are no sensors, I was wondering if you recommend I have only one panel capable of setup modes and not having that capability on all panels?

There will be one behind a receptionist' s desk, but its designed to be a panel to control the pre-function space. Again, no wall sensors.\

I believe I need to create an XP for each zones individual zone controls and then one for each combination.?

Re: Laptop suggestion for Crestron and AMX

You don't need a ton of processing power for Crestron software, other than some programs being single threaded, where core speed will launch apps faster.?

Definitely get a SSD and 8GB RAM is fine.?

I would actually keep to a 1080p display as Crestron programs don't HiDPI scale that well. I end up running my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro @ 1080p even though it has a QHD+ display.?

Speaking of which, I'm loving my Yoga 2 Pro. It's outdated now but still performs great, and my backpack has never been lighter. You do have to use a USB3 Ethernet dongle but it's no big deal. I bought two of them so I can even do dial NICs, WiFi, and USB Tethered phone (for Internet) all at the same time (Yes, there are situations).?

I'm a big fan of Dell laptops, when purchased direct, and mostly their Latitude, Precision, and XPS lines. Vostro is nice for the price point. Their store-bought is OK but nowhere near the level of support.?

Touch screen is nice for when you run XPANEL for testing... which is partly why I went with the convertible.?

Re: Laptop suggestion for Crestron and AMX

Raj,

? I am looking for a new Laptop for this purpose as well. ?Did you find something? ?I know that the Crestron Owners Group on LinkedIn has a discussion on this. ?Most folks seem to be going with Microsoft Surface Pros for fieldwork, while a list of others are using Macbook Pros, but have to run some type of Windows emulation to get the software to run.

I am interested to see if you have purchased anything yet, and if others have any recommendations.

Re: Combinable / Divisible Rooms

Just do it. Make sure you get all your combined scenarios before you start. Get it from the customer, not the engineer. I've been told by engineers one thing with 5 rooms that had like 7 different combine modes, assignable ATC, hot plug and of course all scenarios except combine all were wrong. I was pissed. As long as you get your thoughts clear before you start you shouldn't have problems. If I remember correctly Lincoln makes the user shut down the system before combining, I've never done it this way.. I always make it so the user can select whatever mode whether the room is on or not. Just make sure to block the user out from pushing buttons while you do all the mode set up and you will be good. Users love pushing buttons when you are the middle of calling a preset in a dsp or something, or going no I would rather combine this way and the system hasn't even finished processing the first selection from 2 seconds ago.

Re: Controllable Mixer

I know this thread is old, but BSS BLU works great with 3 series. I was only looking at this because I was searching RANE HAL and trying to find anything related that anyone can share as far as support, controls and if unsolicited feedback is available. The demo from from their site seems very basic and no real module other than a small S+ that ramps volume 1000 steps. Other than that, I am totally a newbie on this product and need to get caught up like yesterday.?

Anybody work with RAN HAL before and share horror or dream stories?

Thanks,
