Yea we did this type of thing as a redundancy solution and It was slightly quirky at first but in the end it seemed to work pretty well. Not sure if thats the solution you are working towards here,

We have used a Mobi Control device on a few occasions and they are simple to set up worked without any problems over a long period. They have a built in battery and ideal to signal power fail.
