SAA Web Archiving Section Coffee Chat with Ian Milligan
Amanda Greenwood
Please join the Society of American Archivists Web Archiving Section for a Coffee Chat on Dec. 6, 2022 at 10am PST/1pm EST for an enlightening talk by Dr. Ian Milligan who will discuss the research use of web archives. Register for the Coffee Chat here:?? ? “Since 1996, web archives have become almost immeasurably large repositories of cultural heritage. The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, for example, has hundreds of billions of unique URLs and over 57 PB of data (and other collectors such as national?libraries?probably have about the same again, combined). The problem thus may not be that we haven’t collected enough data, but that we struggle with what to do with it all! In this talk, I will explore some research use cases for web archival data, and explain what we have done in the Archives Unleashed project to try to “unleash” web archival collections for research use.”? Ian Milligan is professor of history at the University of Waterloo, where he is also Associate Vice-President, Research Oversight and Analysis. Milligan’s primary research focus is on how historians can use web archives, as well as the impact of digital sources on historical practice more generally. Since 2017, Milligan has been principal investigator of the Archives Unleashed project. Amanda Greenwood Bigelow Project Archivist Schaffer Library, 3rd Floor Union College? 807 Union Street |
