Lead screw chip shield 86
Recently purchased and cleaned up a H54 10" Atlas lathe. Has the feed direction box. Looking for images, plans or ideas for a chip shield to cover the screw for some distance on each side of the apron. I am not interested in the plastic or metal spiral covers. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bHWCLfdiUSE/XqS5fnDSBFI/AAAAAAAAI1k/lJdmgk6EALgMiufc4VTBhinojvLGgwBgwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_0472.JPG

Allen key size for Craftsman 101 4 jaw chuck 22
What is the proper allen key to use with the Craftsman 101 6" lathe chuck? I have used a 7/32" key but, it seems loose. 1/4" is too big. The original owner verified that I should use a hex key but, did not specify witch one. Thanks, Marty

New Member, New to me 7b
Hello everyone, finally got a shaper. Been looking for a couple years and they seem scarce around here in SoCal. Missing the usual. Side door cover, both belt guards and motor. I noticed today the bevel gear is broke in two that goes horizontal to adjust ram position. Happy with the find and am slowly cleaning. Glad I found this group because I am sure I will have questions. It came with a 1/2 horse motor, seems like someone's project that never was finished. I think my main concern right now while I clean is figuring out a vise that will work out well. The belt guards and cover are superficial but of course I want them eventually. Thanks for letting me join. I have several other vintage machines but this is my first shaper. I am glad they have a good following compared to my other more rare machines. Look forward to chatting Vincent

Some days, you just mess up 10
After using the MLA Toolbox table with a pedestal for QCTP (meaning no compound). I decided I missed the compound and had already gotten tired of flipping back and forth between the fixed pedestal and the compound. The MLA plans provide a mushroom button design to mount the Atlas compound. While it is an OK solution, I wanted to address two aspects. One, it puts the QCTP too high, requiring bit height adjustment on every tool holder and second with only a single 5/16 screw holding the mushroom button down, it can't be as stiff as the connection to the original Atlas cross slide cast in place mushroom. I decided to design a new lower dovetail for the Atlas compound that would put the top of the compound at the same height as original Atlas assy, and hopefully be more rigid than the original. The concept for turning the compound to different angles involves a machinist angle gage (a drafting triangle is shown) and individual toe clamps that engage the slots in the side of the lower dovetail. Since I leave it at 30 degrees most of the time, I put two bolt locations into the body that fit the t-slots at 30 degrees so no toe clamps needed at the moment. I'll make them later. Off 30 degrees, the toe clamps would work in concert with the one body bolt location opposite the brass nut as it is accessible to tighten by retracting the compound. I made the lower dovetail about an inch longer than stock so that the upper slide never comes off the dovetail at the forward end of travel. With that change, it is possible to hit the chuck with the lower dovetail (with compound retracted). I think I will nip off one corner at 45 deg where it overhangs the cross slide (see image). That will make it a lot harder to hit the chuck. It will still have more support than the original slide even with this piece gone. It is installed and working but I am going to have to make it over again I think. I'll call this a prototype just to save face. I screwed up in two places. One, I didn't pay attention to how far the gib screws were adjusted inward on my old Atlas compound and as a result, the new male dovetail is the same as the old Atlas male dovetail. A lot smaller than it should have been for best rigidity. Needs to be about .040 wider. The gib rocks on the gib screws (as it did before). The real killer is that I made a math error on my drawing. The height dimension of course. The new assembly is accurately machined within .001 of a dimension that is 0.100 too short. Arghh. So I can use it for now. I think I will do so for a while before making another one, just to learn if there are any other issues.

Tool Post Grinder 22
Woke up earlier this morning than I intended to, but not bad for how my gut has been feeling the last few days. Looked at the tool post grinder I've been watching on ebay for a few days, and saw the price had dropped from $224 to $201, with $15 shipping, and 48 minutes to go... In a moment of madness, I bought it. It's a Themac, with no labels or plates, so no idea which model. Cheapest one new is around a couple of grand, and it supposedly runs, but needs a new cord. Be interesting to figure out which model it is. Downloaded the drawings and such from the manufacturer website, has dimensions that should help me narrow it down. Hopefully it won't be too big to use on my 10" lathes. Also wonder if I could improvise a mount to use it for surface grinding small parts like 1-2-3 blocks and the like... Haven't even got it yet and trying to figure out how to stretch the capabilities. ;) Just a note, the seller has quite a bit of stuff for Atlas Craftsman lathes and other interesting stuff... Also bought a Morse 1-1/2" die holder and a more or less matching tap holder fro the same seller. Prices are not excruciatinglly high.. https://www.ebay.com/str/hermanandcompanyetc I'll let y'all know how well packed and how quickly shipped and such once I know more, but a lot of their stuff seems to be about 10% off right now. Graham Mfg Co Double Knurling tool 9
Along with an Atlas 10F I purchased, the owner had 3 boxes of assorted items that he believed went with the Atlas. He was the second owner and didnt know much about it. As I have made my way through the items, I came across this tool. Many of the items are not for the lathe and I am scratching my head with this one. Is this knurling tool meant for installation in the tail stock? The tail is not tapered, it is 5/8" round the entire length on mine, and is centered where the two knurled intersect. I loaded my pic also here is an example (the only example) I could find of the tool online. The item is sold but the picture is better quality than my phone pic. Any help appreciated. Recommendations for shims for leveling lathe?? 25
I'm finally getting my 12x24 Craftsman lathe set up and will need to do some shimming differently than before, and I'm looking for recommendations for a source of good shims, maybe an assortment so I have what I need on hand. I see McMaster-Carr has a set for under $30 with 2 each of 13 thicknesses. What has been your experience with number and thickness of shims that might be needed? I need to do some more measuring using feeler gauges to see for sure what total thickness I may need, but looking for possible sources of shim stock. Thanks! Jim, in Menomonie, WI

Speakin of Machinist levels and tunit up the lathe 2
I nabbed an ebay cheap precision level a few years back. It may or may not be as good as they say, but I’m not on a boat and it sure helped my lathe. One sheet of paper will take the 6” level pretty much lock to lock, it’s sensitive enough. I hate to even comment about how far out mine was, the bench under it warped some from the weight or simply wasn’t level when I built it. Worlds of difference after leveling. Yes some new supports for under the bench top are planned, then a re-level. Another recent finding, last weekend to be exact. Stumbled onto a YouTube on head stock preload. Now I’ve had the lathe for probably 30 years. I thought I had set the preload but guess I didn’t do a great job. Saw these guys taking massive cuts. I couldn’t get a clean cut on one half that size and don’t even talk to be about using a cutoff tool. While it didn’t show any end play, according to the video after half an hour the bearings were supposed to get warm (way warmer than I would probably like) and mine didn’t at all. Now I’ve been using some good spindle oil instead of the 3-in-1 and that probably helps, but… I’ve done a full ? turn of the nut and it’s just barley (2-4 degrees?) warming after 30-50 minutes of work. Will take another shot at it and see if just a bit more might be helpful. Also went to a quick change wedge tool post (thank you all for the sizing there) and I just took some large cuts for me and still have a really nice finish. Threaded some parts 25.4mm x 0.75mm ( J ) that came out nice too. Cut-off is now easy and clean. Sharing cause I don’t want anyone to think they are hoggin all the mistakes J Greg

Speakin of Machinist levels 4
eventually the lathe leveling conversation leads to machinist levels . Having more than one level can certainly speed things up . If you have any pawn shops in your area they can be a good source for levels & other machinist tools for real good prices . I picked up a 6" Starrett level for $ 40.00 a few months back . Got a Mit 0-1 digital mic for $25.00 & a Best Test indicator for another 25 & a SPI vertical reading test indicator for another 20 . It's hit or miss , but if I'm in the big city & drive by a pawn shop I usually head in & see what they got . animal

3990 was a bust 4
I tried to buy the 3990 today. This was through a real estate agent that was trying to get a property ready to sell. Owner was an older woman that didn't know anything about the tools and her husband was an invalid. Real estate agent asked me if the thing next to the lathe was part of the lathe - it was a hydraulic press. Deal was $1000 and I got to pick up lathe bits that I could find. We got over there and there was a bucket on the lathe that had a steady rest and a few tool holders in two sizes. I spun the spindle by hand to check that everything was moving and turned on the motor. Tensioned the belts and the spindle started spinning. Then I hit the feed. Nothing moved so I went looking for what I had set incorrectly. Then I noticed that there was no leadscrew. Looked back at the gear box and saw lots of bad weld blobs. Lead screw had been cut off at the gear box. It looked like he was set up to make a specific plastic part. He had bins of older computer chips so it may have been some small time manufacturing. He also had a tool post grinder box with no grinder in it. There was also another shed with another lathe - small Sears after they stopped selling Atlas as Craftsman. That one had the Dumore tool post grinder mounted on it. Also a few measuring tools. I gave the real estate agent some suggestions and we came home. 7 gallons og gas and a $28 UHaul rental. If anyone is interested in the lathe or tool post grinder I can put you in touch with the agent. It is located in Hamburg NY (near Buffalo). Picture of the welding on the gearbox. Dave

looking for a recommendation on motor pulley 3
I have a Craftsman/Atlas Commercial 12" lathe (circa 1964). The pot metal pulley on my motor shaft cracked. The bore is 5/8" and the steps are 1.04" and 3.3" in diameter. Any suggestions for where to buy a replacement? Yes, I could make a new one but.... my lathe is down :-( Thanks in advance, Rick

Reasonable price range on a 3990? 24
There is an At;las 3990 about 75 miles from here that I replied to in an ad. Not great photos but it has a 3 jaw and shows a quick change tool post with a boring bar in it. It looks like a garage and fairly accessible. It is being advertised for a client by what appears to be a real estate agent. Story is older guy in ill health and wife getting rid of the house. I have an engine hoist so I could move it into my pickup, possibly by removing the lathe from the table. I am guessing that they aren't getting a lot of interest because the seller messaged me this morning implying that they were very open to offers. What is a reasonable price range on one of these lathes? Looks to be a 12". Serial is 005555. Dave
