Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL

not mine , just passin? on

animal

Looks like mine and also without 4 jaw chuck, but it does have steady rest.. So a little more investment is required on top of $500.

The current Machinist's Workshop has a DIY 4-jaw chuck. Might be an option for cheap bastriches like me. :)?

The value of one's time is greater than the 60 bucks or so you have to spend on a replacement chuck.?

Where did you find a new replacement 4-jaw chuck for $60? Besides that, making your own would certainly be good practice. :)

Ebay is full of 5-inch 4-jaw chucks at aroudn 60 bucks and they are new at that price. Find one that matches your spindle.?

Even if it were 100 bucks, it still beats making your own.?

The cost of materials alone will cost more than that, unless you chose to make a chuck out of mystery steel and not harden the jaws.?

But that would not be a chuck, it would be just a worthless chuck-shaped object.?

Andrei

Show me even one for 60 bucks...or even $100...that has a threaded back plate!

The backplate is a separate item that you buy or you make. Nobody sells new chucks with a backplate because they don't know what lathe you have.?

Go to littlemachineshop.com and buy a backplate for about 30 bucks (for 4") or up, then turn it to match your spindle and chuck and you are done.?

As for the chuck, just do a search on eBay for K72-xxx where xxx is the diameter in millimeters. So, it is 100mm for 4", 125 for 5" and 150 for 6" chucks. The prices I found with great ease start at $59 and go up from there.

Instead of complaining about it, just do the legwork. I spoon fed you all the information you need to find your chuck/plate combo.?

Andrei

Some people are just too lazy to find the solution themselves.?

Knowledge is like manure, it won't do any good unless you spread it around.

Actually, 1 1/2 x 8 is such a common size they actually do sell chucks with a backplate that is pre-threaded.

Regardless of how you buy the backplate (by itself, or in the same box with a chuck), you still have to turn the backplate, to ensure true running ON YOUR lathe.?

So, it is not a big?deal to purchase the two separately.?

Andrei
