My wife is smart enough to see through that.? She would be quick to point out that making parts on a machine to fix that machine obviously is no justification for having the machine.? It would have to also be able to make parts for some other valid reason. ? ?

As I and others have written here many times, there are PDF file scans of many of the Atlas produced manuals on the various model lathes and other machines.? The other manual that you should acquire was also written by someone at Atlas Press Company and a current copy of it was shipped with each Atlas or Craftsman lathe sold.? The title is “Manual Of Lathe Operation And Machinist’s Tables”, or MOLO for short.? It was first published in 1937 and was revised numerous times up through 1988.? It was reprinted 32 times over that period.? Over the 33 editions, there were 9 major versions and numerous minor ones.? The 33rd Edition is still available new from Clausing.? However, although the tables didn’t change much, the photographs, lubrication chart and threading charts changed a little or a lot to match the current models being sole the year in which each Edition was printed. ? I would recommend that you acquire an original of the version that matches your specific machine. The current best place to find them is eBay.? Average selling price is about $35 +/- $10. ?Some eBay sellers have delusions of grandeur.? Except for Versions 0 and 1, I wouldn’t pay over about $45 for one. ? To aid in finding the correct version, I wrote two documents, a MOLO history, and a selection chart by lathe model number.? These are also in the Group’s Files section.? Note that the Version number (0 through 9) was made up by me.? If you ask an eBay seller what version number the one he is selling is, the best that you can hope for is “hunh?”.? Also, as explained in the History, from the first edition in 1937 through the 15th in 1952, the Copyright page (rear of the Title page) just says “Copyright 1937”,? Consequently, quite a few eBay sellers have claimed in their write-up that the one they were selling was a First Edition.? In more than a decade of following the ads on eBay, none have ever been right! ? Robert Downs ?

Re: P/n for L3-27 GEAR CASE with bushing.
Hi Ralph,
Yes, mine too, and even on Clausing's list that they sent me. ?This is on the illustrated parts sheet. ?On the numbered parts list, both mine and the one Clausing sent me, L3-27 is listed as Screw, stud bracket. ?It appears the part number for the actual Stud Bracket, or whatever this part is actually called, ?is not listed. ?
Causing replied they were not able to quote price due to the list being wrong and the part not listed on the part sheet.. ?They went on to say they will look into this and get back to me. ?
I'll post their reply.

Chris, there is no offense, man. I am just trying to give you advice so you don;t make the same mistakes as I have. There are times when it is advantageous to look at alternatives, but sometimes the cost difference is minor and the performance difference is
huge, and not in a good way.?
I tried the hat felt on my milling machine and it did not work. Spending 10-12 bucks on a set of wipers and wiper guides is cheap insurance against a chip finding its way in there and gouging or jamming your ways.?

Hat felt has been steam-treated to harden and stiffen it. It will not absorb and transfer oil as well as regular, un-steamed felt. you can buy a piece of felt online at eBay, sometimes at a crafts store, and definitely at McMaster Carr, or spring a few
bucks for the kit and be done with it.
Use the right tool for the right job, and hat felt ain't it.?
If you have one then you have a pattern. My mother made felt by putting a wool garment into the washing machine. When I start looking I'll go to the thrift shop , looking for a felt hat or something. What i don't know is thickness, like would
an innertube work for the wipers?

Craft stores usually have felt from synthetic fiber. The kind you need is wool felt. McMaster Carr is probably the best place to get it. Or maybe Grainger.

It was actually a fun project,

justify their use to our wives!

P/n for L3-27 GEAR CASE with bushing.
The lathe in question is Craftsman 101.07403, S/n 15154, 12 X 24, standard change.
Page 3 of the parts list I have clearly shows the part named GEAR CASE with bushing as having part # L3-27. ?This is the housing that carries the L3-52A stud that the lead screw slips into. ?
Looking at the parts list on the back page of this manual, Part no. L3-27 is listed as the screw that holds this bushing bracket in place. ?I am not seeing any listing for the part, I'll call it the lead screw bushing bracket, that I'm looking for. ?So it appears some confusion crept in when this parts list was compiled.
I have an inquiry in to Clausing now asking about this part, and their reply was they were having a problem identifying this part. ?
Checking lists on this site I am not able to properly identify this part. ?
Can anyone provide the real part number for this part?
And if so, does any one have one they don't need?
