It's funny that this popped up today. I was just out in the garage messing around with my 10F (with the horizontal countershaft so these holes are empty) and was wondering what the unused holes were

??? the holes in front were for the back gear covers on each side of teh headstock . SOuth Bend dod the same thing with their 9 & maybe some 10" lathes . ??? animal

I have searched thru my 1937 and the 1967 How to Run a Atlas lathe handbooks and I find no information as to their use. In the 1937 book, it shows those with round head screws and

These holes line up with the spindle back gears. ?I wonder if the intention was they could be used with a suitable detent pin for indexing holes not provided for by the 60 holes in the bull gear?

The varispeed has two sliding cones.? One is spring loaded, the other is operated by the hand wheel.? If you turn the wheel one way, it widens the cone, and the spring-loaded one will just slide
