The question then becomes ... how...?? Don't want to destroy whatever is retaining the ball at the ID.? Drill out from the OD to expose the spring behind the ball.? Then how to close that opening

I would replace the ball and spring first. I have this lathe and have lost
the ball and found one close that works.

I tried that group first, when I first got this lathe, last summer.? Lots, if not all have or are familiar with the 6" lathes.? Apparently I was not compatible, didn't make it though the new member

I don't have a lathe like yours but looks to me that the spring and ball would be put it the blind hole and a pin pushed in from the thru hole side to depress the ball while sliding it over the

Neither.? Only one ball, total.? That one ball is shifted from the inner groove on the spindle to the outer groove when the drive coupler is moved from the "engaged" position locking the spindle
