Everybody recommends magnetic scales because they can be cut to size. They come in aluminum and stainless steel. Steel is more expensive.

I've thought about a DRO on my 12x36 and on my South Bend 9A. Where I really want one is on my South Bend 16 but there is one small, maybe not so small issue.? The bed length is 144"? with 120" of carriage travel.? I imagine a glass scale for that lathe is going to cost out the wazoo.

I have a 12” Craftsman Commercial. I have IGaging dro , used a 12” and a 36” on mine. I have the Aluminum rails that are actually 6” longer than the given size to compensate for the 3” pickup. 12” is 18”, 36” is 42” . Nice thing with the Alum. Is you cut to fit. On my 3rd set of these ( 2 lathes and 1 mini mill ) and have no problems. Very accurate and work well. Bought on EBay Taylor Tools in Columbia,Mo.

Tachometer for 12” lathe

Attached are photos for the tachometer install on my Atlas 12” underdrive model 3996 lathe. I have a similar install on my 10F Atlas lathe. Both lathes are equipped with a new VFD rated three phase motor and Teco VFD for variable speed capability and to provide the three phase motor power from 120 volt single phase input power. The tachometer is a “Tachulator” unit you can purchase from www.littlemachineshop.com for $110 plus shipping. The tachulator uses a photoelectric sensor that must be approx 1/10” away from the item being sensed. I use a 1/4” square piece of reflective tape attached to the LH spindle collar as shown in the photo. The VFD in the first photo reads 31.2 Hz and the tachulator reads 684 rpm spindle speed. Changing the spindle speed is as easy as turning the knob on the front of the VFD.

An alternative would be to use a hand held photoelectric tachometer with a piece of reflective tape attached to the body of your chuck to take rpm readings.

Re: Tachometer for 12" Atlas

And your machines are much happier, too. ?The Atlas was designed for less than 1 HP, and there are lots of parts - the back gears, the bull gear lock pin, etc. - that could easily be broken by too much power.

Why 3hp? Besides that is what treadmill motors are.

I doubt these lathes and mills need much more hp than what they were designed?for.

One might be throwing money at things that don't really need it.

Of course I upgrade both my mill and my 14" Delta bandsaw with a 3/4 hp BLDC motor.

I will also do my 12x36 Craftsman lathe.

Just had a look at the ELS link and saw this >> Spindle Optical Sensor.

Would that not do what you need if you go with the ELS?

If you are going that route, ELS, why not also upgrade to a larger DC motor? I have converted my Bridgeport mill and my craftsman 12" lathe to 3 HP DC motors using ether LEESON & Pacific scientific motors from treadmills. These are full on commercial treadmill motors not the usual plastic junk treadmill motors.

For speed control I am using KB electronics units. These can be wired into a control unit that can output PWM style signal and thus might be controlled by a ELS style control unit.

I have had my lathe re-powered with the 3 hp pacific scientific motor and KB controller for about 6 months and it is the single best mod you can ever do to your atlas/craftsman lathe. I simply love love love it.

If I were to do that now though, I would look into a 3 phase motor and VFD control instead of the DC. I think if you could score a good used 3 phase motor and use a new VFD it would be affordable.

Man a lot of members here like gadgets if you want to control the speed on your lathe i would use a in line ( power line ) control.? ?
I think it may be cheaper and easy to install?

Re: Tachometer for 12" Atlas

If you do not need a continuous speed reading, one solution would one of those relatively inexpensive, hand held, laser units with digital readout.? I believe the counter within is crystal controlled, so the accuracy should be in the 0.01% region.? These meters come with a supply of reflective tape.? You just place a narrow strip on a chuck or the like and point the laser beam while the machine is running.? An advantage is that you can use it on any number of machines and for such things as setting the idle speed of your automobile engine.?

I bought mine to measure the chuck speed of a micro drill press I was making and wanted to be able to read up to 25,000 RPM.? It worked fine.? This was about ten years ago.? I do not know what these units currently cost, but I think I paid about $28.
