Re: Atlas / Craftsman 10F-12 10" & 12" Lathe Half Nuts / Split Nut
Speedoo51: I had considered that the actual threads in the brass were not accurate to the size of the half nuts.? Yes, when I was reworking my lathe I replaced my lead screw with less worn acme threads, so all these parts can vary the accuracy? of the threads.? Only the? half nuts and the position of the thread dial can tell you when to start your threads.? All good info. On Wed, Feb 6, 2019 at 1:51 PM Jim Irwin <jimirwin@...> wrote:

Dead Center
The manual for my Atlas 10" says a sleeve is provided to go from a #2
Morse taper to a #3 Morse taper. I know little about machining and so I don't know if this means I could buy a #3 Morse dead center and directly put it in the headstock spindle and eliminate the sleeve. Would I be able to do this, or could there still be some problems in the taper of the bought dead center not matching like it should to the taper in the headstock? Stan |

Quick Change Post
I have the Atlas 10" lathe. I do not know what the center to center is,
but the bed length the carriage rides on is almost 36" from where it meets the headstock to the end of the bed. In this group it had previously been determined that it is of vintage 1957 or so. I would like to replace the rocker tool holder with a quick change tool holder. Can anyone recommend a good one for this lathe? Stan |

Re: Atlas / Craftsman 10F-12 10" & 12" Lathe Half Nuts / Split Nut
开云体育This is called “zinc pest” and is the result of the casting alloy (primarily zinc) having lead as an impurity.’Tain’t s’posed to be any lead in there, but has been known to happen. In other words, this is an anomaly not something endemic to Zamak or other zinc-based alloys. The Zamak alloy used in our lathe parts is quite a strong & durable alloy. Check it out. BUT some few parts have fallen to zinc pest.? There is no way to induce this problem in existing parts, nor to remedy it (except replacing the parts). Jim Irwin

Thanks for the links! One caveat for the gears from Gadget047, he says he designed them with a 20 degree pressure angle. IIRC, the original gears have a 14.5 degree pressure angle. Got to get my printer set back up, and get started printing again. Thanks for the motivation! Bill in OKC
