Re: I Need a 3 Jaw Chuck

Oh, if you buy an older chuck, you're taking pot luck that it will be useable. I put a Shars 4-jaw 6" chuck on my Atlas when I bought it, because the Atlas chuck that came with it was out by .014".? And the Shars was cheaper than an original Atlas chuck. Which might be good, but might not. I would love to put a Buck Adjust-tru chuck on it, but they cost more than I paid for any of my larger lathes. If I were working as a machinist, that would probably be easily justifiable. As a hobbyist, nope! YMMV!

With a decent 4-jaw and a stub spindle you get better accuracy than you would with all but the best 3-jaw chucks, and less time spent dialing parts in. You don't always need the accuracy of a 4-jaw, but I don't see it hurting anything unless you're working for high production. Your needs are unlikely to match mine, so my advise may not fit at all, but! A stub spindle will speed you up with a 3 jaw chuck, too, so very worth doing.

Re: I Need a 3 Jaw Chuck

Make yourself a dummy spindle stub. First single-point threading project I did in my machine shop class, instead of what I was supposed to make, was just that. You cut it to as exactly duplicate the lathe spindle as you? can manage, and use it to check fit on stuff to go on your spindle. Saves a lot of time and setup work! It's also nothing fancy. I actually made two of them, one being 1-1/2"-8 tpi cut on a 3" or 4" piece of 2" round stock for my Atlas TH42, and the other 2-1/4"-8 tpi on a 4" or 5" piece of 3" round stock.?

Edited

I haven't been on the group for so long, I'd forgotten it had to migrate away from Yahoo
With that in mind, ?I apologize if this post is in the?wrong place
I have a 10" (not nine) atlas lathe with assorted accessories, including turret, milling attachment, steady and follow rests, quick change tool post, collet holder, some collets, small three jaw chuck, larger four jaw chuck Boring bar, knurling tool, a few incomplete accessories, like taper bar, change gears and a few mystery parts. Comes with a good wooden cabinet with three drawers, work light and pan for coolant.
it's not in perfect shape. The switch could stand rewiring- reverse doesn't work. The power feed F/R lever isn't working that well either Still, with a little TLC, this can be a good tool for your shop, and at a decent price. I'll get some photos loaded soon, Meanwhile, here's my local craigslist ad, which has pics

549 is the vendor code for Emco, an Austrian machine tool manufacturer who made lathes and mills until a decade or two ago. Now they make vertical machining centers and all sorts of cnc equipment.?

Their manual lathes range from the lowly Unimat to the 13 inch toolroom Maximat.?

Hope this helps.?

P.S. What is Sears?

Make sure that the sling's are not contacting the leadscrew at any point . Remove the tailstock , chuck , anything else to lighten it up some . the balance point of a lathe in the air can change at any second . Best to remove from the base/stand & keep the unit a low to the ground when moving .

Re: Reasonable price range on a 3990?

It will definitely go into the cellar in two pieces.? Taking it apart in someone's garage will be based on how hard it is to get it apart.? I need to look at it first.? I am finding nothing on how to release the belts to the spindle from the bottom.? The last thing to make the trip into the cellar was a 725 pound Enco Mill/Drill.? I will probably bolt the lathe to a 8' 2x10 and just sort of slide it down the stairs using the tractor as an anchor and the engine hoist to pick up the bottom end and roll it into the cellar.

I went to ArnFest last year. Its promoted as an Annual celebration of vintage machinery. There were ~30-40 sellers set up to sell there stuff on Saturday for the swap meet. Not all machinist related but enough for me to be happy. It took me less than an hour to see the whole swap meet. I sold some stuff and Mr. Pete was selling there next to me. I bought a chunk of aluminum from him. The swap meet was in Union, IL in the Illinois Railway Museum parking lot. This is a multiday event with lots of activities. You can google "ArnFest Illinois" and find their web site for further details. This years ArnFest is Sep 21-24.
No affiliation but a fun time if you like trains or vintage machinery.

Re: Reasonable price range on a 3990?

I definitely understand the cost of tooling.? The little 6x18 Craftsman I have was bad enough and the Enco mill that I got in March is getting really bad.? Luckily I got that on its shipping pallet for about 1/2 the price of a new one and the guy threw in a Bridgeport vise.

I have an engine hoist so I could move it into my pickup, possibly by removing the lathe from the table.

I am guessing that they aren't getting a lot of interest because the seller messaged me this morning implying that they were very open to offers.

What is a reasonable price range on one of these lathes?? Looks to be a 12".? Serial is 005555.

Re: Reasonable price range on a 3990?

I'd say 1000 to 2000 assuming it is in good condition and depending on what comes with it.? Steady rests, milling attachments, etc, are valuable.? Atlas lathes seem to have jumped in price over the last few years. ? But price depends a lot on the local market. ?

I recommend finding someone who is familiar with Atlas lathes to go with you for inspection.? It would be easy to spend hundreds more replacing things that are broken or missing.? And a badly worn bed or spindle could turn the lathe into scrap.?
