Re: 3D Printing Files for Gears, etc
Just in case anybody does not know, the gears for the craftsman 109, are the same gears that will fit the Atlas 618 and craftsman derivatives, I own both lathes and interchange gears at will.?? I don't know if anyone has a 3D printer on this group, but in case you do (or know someone that does), I modeled all of the gears, the keyed hub, banjo, lathe handle, and a transposition gear for my Craftsman 109 lathe and posted them on Thingiverse:??
I have included all of the STLs, DXFs, and Autodesk Inventor files for each model in case people want/need to edit the files.? I licensed everything under a Creative Commons - Non-Commercial - Share-Alike license meaning anyone can share or use them but cannot sell them:?? Enjoy! |

Before you take any drastic action, check to see if your lathe has a belt tensioner and if it is in the correct position. After these check out, and the belt is still loose, it means you have a stretched belt. While this can be corrected sometimes,
it also may mean that you need to replace it. There are several sources on the net for belts that are stitched and belts that are fused with heat. Here is just one source on the net that has both. There are maybe a dozen or more other vendors, but this is
one I remember from a post on another list.?

Is it suitable to use belt dressing on the flat belt for a lathe?

I have a South Bend and two Atlas lathes. One has wide belt drive. I can’t seem to get the tension tight enough to prevent slip. Any hints? |

Re: Atlas / Craftsman 10F-12 10" & 12" Lathe Half Nuts / Split Nut
BTW: I am not certain brass is the best choice of material. I think the E-Bay sellers are machining them from brass because it is a common material, easy to machine, and is much softer than the leadscrew and will be kind to it. I would prefer C932 Bearing Bronze (aka SAE 660 bronze). I asked one of the sellers who was making them in his shop if he could do it in bronze but he declined. Bearing bronze is about 30-40% more costly than C360 brass. Alas, I do not have the machinery nor have I yet acquired the skill set to make them myself.? Meanwhile, the ZAMAK split nuts for a 3/4" leadscrew are still available from Clausing.

Re: Atlas / Craftsman 10F-12 10" & 12" Lathe Half Nuts / Split Nut
Yes, there was a copy of the Atlas half nut installation instructions included with the new nuts. No adjustment needed other than moving the tailstock to the far RH end of the bed, lock down the taikstock, then move the saddle down to the far RH end of the bed as far as the tailstock will allow. Then use a 7/16” wrench to loosen the hex head screw on the underside of the leadscrew bearing bracket. Then engage the half nut lever to clamp the half nuts onto the leadscrew. This sets the leadscrew bearing bracket front/rear position. Finally tighten the hex head screw on the bottom of the leadscrew bearing bracket.
This was an install on a Model 3996 12” Atlas (aka “Craftsman Commercial”). The “Adjusting Lead Screw Alignment” instructions are shown in the Model 3996 Operating Instructions and Parts List in the Group files section. On an Atlas 10F lathe, the 10F-16 leadscrew bearing bracket is solid with no forward/rear adjustment. I guess if any adjustment was necessary one could shim behind the bracket or remove a slight amount of material from the mounting face of the bracket. Steve Haskell Troy, MI |

I put a brass set in two years ago and posted the pics.? Some here thought it was OK and others stated that the Zmac was a good set and the standard to maintain.? As I remember, there is an adjustment that was to be made if you use the brass set.? I would have to go the shop (miles away) to find the paper.? Did you get this paper with the half nuts?? 开云体育If the OD was perfectly coventry to the bore , this would work.? However that is never the case. Barrel work should be set up off the bore.Thats an interesting idea? though. -Jody -------- Original message --------
