Re: I Need a 3 Jaw Chuck
I agree Andrei, 3 jaw is standard equipment.? This was my grandfathers lathe and he bought it from his brother who was an electrician and did a lot of conduit and maybe some work on boxes with it as well.? So maybe the 4 jaw met his needs better.? Maybe the 3 jaw went missing at some point as well. -Jody On Sat, Apr 18, 2020 at 2:23 PM Andrei <calciu1@...> wrote:

You can probably live with a cheaper 3-jaw for a while, if the compressor is a priority. But it is odd that you did not have a 3 jaw. That is the workhorse of a lathe and the 4-jaw comes always later. From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Jody <jp4lsu@...>

Thanks Andrei,
I've come across some of them and yes a bit pricey.? Especially as I'm about to pony up for a new air compressor.? Maybe I can manage my frustration a bit longer to find a deal.? I was making spider for the lathe and thought it would be a good project
for some experience and it became very frustrating and time consuming taking the work out of the chuck to test fit threads, flip around to bore ID on one end and clean up OD after work was completed.?
Not to mention I don't have a QCGB so that added to time and frustration as well when switching back and forth boring, threading, boring & cutting.

It will give a really hard abrasion resistant case but still soft and "deformable" under that .001/.002 surface hardness. Done this before as well.
Water quench will probably give a higher hardness, still not deep though.
Very nice project no matter what!

Jody, Buck chucks are adjustable for runout and are cool. A bit pricier but worth it

Hey guys,
I have a 12" (101.07403) I've reached a level of frustration having on a 4 jaw chuck and am ready to get a 3 jaw.? I don't mind setting up the work in a 4 jaw but removing the work to check something and then having to re-chuck it is getting tiresome.
There are a few on ebay currently of different brands with the 1 1/2- 8 threads.? (Atlas, Cushman, etc)
Should I try one of the older used chucks or try a new Shars or something similar or stick with an old one?? I would like to find an Atlas 6" diam chuck but they aren't cheap.? Am I rolling the dice either direction with accuracy?
Thanks for the input and advice.

开云体育If it's low carbon like 1018ish it won't respond. All that'll happen is it'll get hot until you quench, then it'll be cool. Only difference will be color. Dave? Bruce, it is a hand vise. Harden it with the torch and oil or water, depending on your steel.
I would harden the whole part, not just the jaw, because it is small enough.

Bruce,
Awesome job on the hand vise!
Where the heck did you find a left hand thread wing nut to pin onto the screw?
Doesn't matter, I like it right down to the handle!
Regarding heat treating: what did you make the jaws out of??
Low carbon? Only option is case hardening.
Anything you might do at home with a torch is likely to give only a very shallow depth. Might call a commercial heat treating place near you to inquire about carburizing.
Explain your situation, they "might" give you a deal.

Re: Need Pulley for Craftsman Speed-Reducing Attachment
Dave Matticks – I was not able to find a left hand wing nut.? I used Fusion 360 to do the drawings.? Instead I purchased a hand full of right hand wing nuts from McMaster-Karr in the next smaller size.? Then just drilled it out and re-threaded in left hand 3/8”.? The body and jaws are 1018 steel.? I have done some case hardening of small gun parts.? Don’t know whether to case harden just the jaw faces or the whole thing?? It is just a hand vise after all.? May just use some Brownell’s and try the jaws first to see how I like it.? Heat jaw face to cherry red, dip in the case hardening, re-heat to cherry red for a couple of minutes, quench in oil, clean up…………? See what happens. --Bruce Varner |

Angle set by compound, toolbit is nothing more than a parting/grooving tool.
Nothing special but it works.
For a one off even on a bigger machine I'd still do it the same way, easier than making a couple form tools! Nice finish comes free.

Your kid is wise, Animal. But there is TP at the store. Found it at Safeway yesterday. Limit 1 pack per purchase. No need to panic.

I was thinking about a smaller one as a little paperweight for postage stamps, hardly use 'em anymore though.
This one's more suited to my ration of 3 squares of TP a day.
Maybe tomorrow I'l make a tiny one for fun!
