Re: 12/15 lunch plans: Michael Finney, Spark

Please note that there is a winter
storm watch for tomorrow, with some
considerable accumulations expected.

I'll send an update out tomorrow a.m.
with any details if plans change -
you never know with these storms
but as long as the restaurant is open,
I'm within walking (sledding? skiing?
distance of downtown).

thanks

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend.

Starting at 11:30 am on Thursday, December 15, the Washtenaw County Election Commission (of which I am one-third) will be meeting, possibly for hours, to consider 26 sets of proposed reasons to remove certain public officials from office via petition drive and recall election.

The officials whose conduct is questioned are two members of the Milan city council, and the three top officials of Pittsfield Township.

Our job is to determine whether the proposed reasons are "clear" enough to satisfy the statute. We have already received several legal briefs on this, and expect to receive more.

This proceeding will not be televised, but it is a public meeting and will be held in the basement meeting room at 200 N. Main, in downtown Ann Arbor.

Re: 12/8 birthday lunch non-summary

Diane Durance

Ed,
Happy Birthday (a little late). Sorry I missed the lunch -- it sounds like
it was a really good time.

Thanks for keeping me in the loop.

See you soon,
Diane

Here's a non-summary of the 12/8 a2b3 meeting at Eastern Accents.

First, you should take a look at the group photo for the event, taken
by David C. Bloom, who stitched the snapshots together and did the
necessary photoshopping to make sure he was also in the picture. It's
up on Flickr at

with some amount of annotation started. I'll add as many more bits of
markup as I can there, so that everyone's face has a URL attached if
they want one.

Going through the faces one at a time to say a
few things -

Wayne Baker is working on visualization
tools for mapping social networks over
time - some of them generate movies.
(I'd welcome more details!)

Larry Kestenbaum handed out copies of
his office's country directory listing all elected and
appointed officials to city, county, and township
offices.

Patrick Haggood came in from Detroit and
is working on teacher education and technology
infusions into teaching.

Kathy Brade at Pearl Crescent helped organize
the day. A "pearl crescent" is a type of butterfly.

Lou Rosenfeld is started up a book publishing
company.

Alan Guiterrez is working on and about to
release a web site about and for the people
of New Orleans.

John Hritz was at a David Allen "Getting Things
Done" seminar last week. He will be celebrating
Discardia in a couple of weeks.

David C. Bloom stitched the picture together and
made sure he was in it.

Mark Smith is also at Pearl Crescent, coincidentally,
he is married to Kathy Brade.

Not pictured: Carol Sun of Eastern Accents who
provided the cake at the end. Thanks Carol!

"the simplicity of the semantic web", Dan Cooney

Kathy Brade asked about Dan Cooney's
painting. You can see it through this

notes from lunch 12/1

a non-review of what happened at lunch

Who was here:
* Mihira
* Joe Cothrel
* Dan Cooney
* Larry Kestenbaum
* Jose Nazario
* Edward Vielmetti

Some notes.

Ed showed off Graphviz and a map of what he had worked on yesterday.

Dan has a painting, The Simplicity of the Semantic Web, which has had
over 1000 hits on Flickr. Ed would like a postcard of the painting -
if anyone knows how to do postcard production in quantity let me know.

Joe found pictures of his parents and grandparents houses on a
municipal website in Toledo, and we noted that the city assessor's
office in Ann Arbor also has housing photos online.

Larry handed out free copies of a Washtenaw County directory his
office produces. He expressed an interest in getting all kinds of map
data visible, things you might not normally think about like postal
and garbage routes.

Jose kicked off a discussion of the AATA and how it would be good to
get more real time data about the buses onto the net for the benefit
of commuters. (I've subsequently contacted Murph who forwarded the
question to Chris White at the AATA.)

I was sitting at the opposite end of the table from Mihira and I got
there late so we didn't talk much.

thanks all, hope to see you next week for ED41! We'll be at Seoul Garden.

thanks

lunch report with Jeff and Anjali Lopez-Stuit

here's a non-summary of the lunch with Jeff and Anjali.

Jeff and Anjali are visiting from Seattle for a couple
of days; they flew into Grand Rapids and will be heading
back tomorrow.

Jeff has been practicing his oud and entertained us not
with music but with an account of the various rhythms
and tunings he has needed to learn to play it.

This was Anjali's first time having bi bim bop and she
made a good go of it.

Sam is back from Shanghai (three weeks) and he reports
that it's way more capitalist there than anywhere here.

Kat has recently enjoyed some Buster Keaton movies - I
didn't catch the title but it was the one where he did
all of his own stunts on a moving train.

Lou was kind enough to lend me money for lunch, so I
owe him one in return.

Thanks all for coming out to see Jeff and Anjali!

I'll certainly try and stop in tomorrow. Will probably be a little
late since I'm coming from the other side of town.

This week's a2b3 resumes at Seoul Garden (again), on Boardwalk near
Eisenhower. We'll meet at 11:45 there. Please do allow a little more
time than ordinary for lunch there, based on last time's efforts, it
took 20+ minutes to get the meal to the table. But it was really good
and distinct from campus area diners.

There was no a2b3 last week, instead I was at an IT Harvest security
summit organized by Richard Stiennon, in Novi. No bi bim bop.
Instead there were very good presentations on the current (sorry)
state of computer, systems, and network security, and what we have to
look forward to. Eye opening and sobering. I was on a blogger's
panel which was good fun (bloggers are routinely ready to talk
extemporaneously about anyone at all).

Hope to see you Thursday, let me know to expect you.

thanks

Ed

I meant to post this earlier, but ... What happened at lunch last week, Thursay, September 22? I got to Eastern Accents at 12:11 and didn't see anyone from the group there.

Hey Ed,

Hope to see some of you there.? I know it's a hike
from downtown.? I'll be driving out there and will
have two seats available to take whoever needs

The following week Oct 6 it looks like I might be
at a conference in Novi - anyone know about good
