Know anyone who can design a kid's craft project? 4
Hi, I am the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor's PR guy. We have been approached by Angela Kline, head of the Ann Arbor Art Fair Association, to participate in the Ann Arbor Street Art Fairs Kick Off. They suggested we have "some handouts to promote our club, especially something younger folks can do in the way of an art or craft take away.¡± I have no clue what would make a good project that kids could easily complete and take away. Would any of you happen to know anyone who could help us design some kind of Rotary-themed kid¡¯s craft project? Regards, Dan Romanchik

Hunting Facebook pages? (Not raccoons)
I'm looking for a volunteer or two, to help me hunt down Facebook pages. (Hopefully a respite from hunting raccoons :-) ) I'm relatively new to this list (and the lunches), but I've known a few of the folk from many years back (Hi, Ed V! Hi, David Bloom!). I hope this sort of post is appropriate for the group -- if not, I trust that whatever passes for leadership :-) will let me know. Specifically, I'm looking for someone to write a tiny bit of code (any language that will run on a Linux server) that calls the Facebook API, and tells me if any given (arbitrary) FB page exists (and is public) -- or not. (No, curl-ing the page will not suffice, I've been down that road. It has to be via the FB API.) Why on earth would I want to do this (I hear you ask)? Long story, stop/delete now if you're not interested. Since the 2016 election ("a date that will live in infamy"), I've been using my software architect skills to help build infrastructure for progressive and Democratic campaigns in Michigan. (The anti-gerrymandering amendment of 2018 was one of our successes.) I retired in 2024, and now I do this (volunteer) work full-time-ish. One tiny piece is keeping the list of Democratic organizations (county parties, caucuses, clubs, districts, etc.) up-to-date. Including (finally!)... if their Facebook page URLs are correct. Anyone interested? In this specific task, or the general idea of bringing the Michigan Dems into the 21st century? -- "I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Dan Friedus in today's "a2view" from the Ann Arbor Observer on NYPL cookbook collection 3
quoting now: A2 collector donates rare cookbooks to New York Public Library collection: Daniel Freidus, a retired U-M academic adviser, has given Dorot Jewish Division more than 250 items that he acquired online, at book fairs around the country, and by browsing specialized bookstores, according to an NYPL blog post. Among the books he¡¯s gifted are ¡°Like Mama Used to Make: a Collection of Favorite and Traditional Jewish Dishes,¡± which was published by the Women of the Ann Arbor Chapter of Hadassah in 1952. From NYPL: https://www.nypl.org/blog/2025/03/03/daniel-freidus-building-dorot-jewish-divisions-cookbook-collection Daniel¡¯s incredible dedication, commitment, energy, and enthusiasm are well captured by the Yiddish word zamler, meaning a voluntary collector¡ªone of those great lovers of libraries who played a crucial role in building Jewish collections in Europe in the first half of the 20th century and brought this tradition with them to America. And there is yet another deep connection that makes Daniel¡¯s contribution even more meaningful. Daniel Freidus comes from a family with roots in Riga, Latvia, directly related to Abraham Freidus, the first Head of the Jewish Division of The New York Public Library (1897¨C1923). One can tell that passion for books and libraries really runs in the family, whose spiritual connection to NYPL seems to pass through generations. -- Edward Vielmetti +1 734 330 2465 edward.vielmetti@...

Possible vermin in the eaves, who to call? 18
Hi, all, The past week, there have been a few times when we've heard noises like critters scrambling at the window, but didn't see any signs of them. They're very annoying noises. My son went outside, and said that from where he stood, it sounded like they were in the walls. Our house had a gambrel-style roof, and we are wondering if some critters may have found a way inside the lower eaves there. We aren't sure who to call to have someone check, and if they are there, remove and block whatever hole they found. (We haven't found a hole yet.) No idea where to start with this! Boy, it's been a lot of house expenses recently. (FYI, the ongoing sewer problem turned out to be a workman that didn't do their job.) /PF -- PF Anderson, pfa@...
