Re: Boster Pin Chart

Michael Hilliard at one time was making some nifty SMALL decals that
had both colors and your initials plus other characters. I forget now the number of combinations he had but it was in the order of several hundred million. Plenty for train nuts around the world, Z or otherwise, where the bolster colors are severely limited to around a hundred combinations or less. ...don --- In Z-Bend_Track@..., Randall Smidt <randy@...> wrote: ever seen anyone raise before, wouldn't the way to avoid confusion in this case be to simply use a color in a spectrum that you CAN indentify. Just wanted to thank the guys for such a warm welcome on my visit to
Swann Avenue on Sunday to get some advice/tips/comments/suggestions on my newly started module. Specifically it was great to meet Art and Justin and again see Rob and Brian. Hopefully I can get the module in working order in the next month or two and actually make it to a train show this year (I'm currently targeting Fredericksburg). Thanks for all your suggestions and encouragement. Wish I could have stayed longer, and watched/helped your progress on the yard modules. I'll try to make it down there again, perhaps even before my kids go off to college ;-) Pat |

Mark, Although you make a very good point that I don't think I've ever seen anyone raise before, wouldn't the way to avoid confusion in this case be to simply use a color in a spectrum that you CAN indentify. For example, if you have a problem with green and blue, most common I believe, use some other colors like red, gold, etc. Typically, you are only looking for your own colors. Everything else that is not your color you don't go home with and someone else would check to see if it's theirs. For 7 or more years this system has worked well. I have also seen some folks paint their name or put coded decals on the bottom of their cars, but the bolster pin colors caught on because it is so easy to do.
By the way, some of us have used ours colors on items that don't have bolster pins, like Marklin 2 axle cars and expansion tracks. Even if a lot of us have a color deficincy, most of us use paints that have the colors printed on them. IF you select red/green use caboose red and burlington green and you will be OK. Re: Boster Pin Chart

Fundamentally, any kind of color coding is a bad idea. Approximately 12% of the male population has serious deficits in color vision, mostly along the red-green axis. In about 3% actual color perception casts the entire spectrum into what people with normal color vision would call either yellow or blue. All this is complicated by the fact that most of the people with deficient color vision are not aware of their problem.
I would urge the Z-Bend participants to develop an identification method that uses color only for redundancy. Mark On Jan 7, 2008, at 9:50 AM, Ztrack@... wrote: =========== Mark Lewis =========== |

Just curious. What is a bolster pin?The bolster pin holds the car trucks to the car body. The concept of for the chart is that club members sign up for color positions. This way, if you are running trains and mix and matching members cars, it is easier to determine who own the car by the color of the pins. We find this very invaluable during shows when a lot of cars can be moved around in a weekend. The bolster was choses since every car has two. If you color position in red/yellow, paint one bolster red, the other yellow to mark you car. Ztrack does maintain the official color chart. We encourage club members to sign up for color positions, especially if you are planning to attend and participate in shows such as NTS that may see a number of different operators on the layouts at any one time. Any cars that do not have painted bolsters become the official property of Ztrack Magazine. The chart says so! LOL! Rob,
Thank you so much. Being I'm a military type your payment will be sent out promptly upon congressional approval of the funding expenditure. I ask for your patience in this manner as it takes some time occasionally for these matters to be properly routed and resolved, but please continue to reserve the maroon and yellow position until that time. :-D While I never had the opportunity to meet Bill K, I know he is much revered in the community and retiring the silver and gold position only seems fitting. ~Paul --- In Z-Bend_Track@..., ztrack@... wrote: still open. Subject: [Z-Bend_Track] Ztrack, Plans for 2008 With today being the last day of 2007, I thought I would share our plans and thoughts for 2008. First, I would like to announce that two long running columns will be ending. Jeffrey MacHan's Last Spike will end with the January/February issue. This long running column has chronicled Jeffrey's VEC and travels. Over 40 articles have appeared in Ztrack during the past 7 years. It has been an amazing run. John Bartolotto's Z Web Search column is also ending. At this time, it appears the November/December 2007 column will be his last. John has been sharing amazing Z scale-oriented web sites in every issue of Ztrack. John is moving on, as is his column. Of course both will live on in our back issues! We are sorry to lose these outstanding columns, but we are very grateful for the work Jeffrey and John have done. Thank you to you both! With one door closing, another opens. I feel there are areas of the Z scale community and interests that we need to enhance our coverage on. The first area is track plans. We have been trying to increase track plans in Ztrack, but with little success. We are looking for track plans of Marklin track, Micro-Trains track, flex track and even module configurations. Ztrack is also looking to add a column for someone who can help us create track plans, associated art and graphics as well as conceptual plans. If you are interested, please contact us off-line. The second area we would like to focus on is module clubs and modules. We would like to see at least one article in every issue of Ztrack dedicated to modules. This would include club news and a featured module of the issue. I think modules are one of the most exciting aspects of Z today. I think it is important we share the work of module builders with the Z community. The November/December 2007 issue of Ztrack will feature Robert Ray's Time Saver Module. We hope this article will be a kick off to regular module features. The third area is increased coverage of European Z layouts. About 40% of our readers are interested in European prototypes. We need to increase our coverage of these areas. Finally, we are looking for more how-to and instructional articles. We see so much amazing work being done on the forums, that it is amazing. I do hope and encourage those doing this work to submit articles to Ztrack. A large portion of our readers do not follow the forums and we would love to share your creations with our complete readership. Ztrack is also working to increase our page count and content. Deane Shepard is working extremely hard to bring in new advertisers, which will allow Ztrack to grow and increase our content. This is not necessarily an easy task, but Deane is already doing an exceptional job. Thank you Deane! The last area I want to talk about is the web. John Cubbin has created two outstanding websites for us. Ztrack.com is a beautiful site that promotes Ztrack incredibly well. We are planning to increase content on the site. John has visions of creating an HTML newsletter and we will be working on that in the new year. Ztrack Center is our new retail web site. Look for new products to appear in 2008. Ztrack is in the process of bringing in two new lines from Germany, which will add almost 200 more products to the site. Thank you John for all of your hard work and dedication! Ztrack will continue to offer subscriber specials on AZL new releases and spec ial imprint cars from FR. We are also looking to continue special car runs with Micro-Trains. As we move into 2008, it looks like another exciting year for Z scale. Ztrack is growing and adapting as the scale grows. It is a wonderful time to be in Z! Happy New Year! Gee, I should have paid more attention in economics class 101. I like your plan for early retirement. I don't suppose you'd like to go 50/50 would you on this marketing plan? You see, I only charge $750.00 for the same service, and I smile bigger when I take the money..:o) I'm afraid if you don't agree to my terms, I'll have to go public with my plan and I'm sure that once folks realize the huge savings they could get with my car marking plan........well, your retirement nest egg could crack and become scrambled!!! Well, it was just a thought. Never mind, go back to your envelope sealing and stamp licking...........I'll have to devise another way to get rich before I turn 110. Happy New Year to you and all the fine Z folks out there. Loren PS. One of my main New Year's resolutions is to find more time to devote to actually working on my railroad..........a noble goal indeed!! ----- Original Message -----
