Ztrack, Plans for 2008
With today being the last day of 2007, I thought I would share our plans and
thoughts for 2008. First, I would like to announce that two long running columns will be ending. Jeffrey MacHan's Last Spike will end with the January/February issue. This long running column has chronicled Jeffrey's VEC and travels. Over 40 articles have appeared in Ztrack during the past 7 years. It has been an amazing run. John Bartolotto's Z Web Search column is also ending. At this time, it appears the November/December 2007 column will be his last. John has been sharing amazing Z scale-oriented web sites in every issue of Ztrack. John is moving on, as is his column. Of course both will live on in our back issues! We are sorry to lose these outstanding columns, but we are very grateful for the work Jeffrey and John have done. Thank you to you both! With one door closing, another opens. I feel there are areas of the Z scale community and interests that we need to enhance our coverage on. The first area is track plans. We have been trying to increase track plans in Ztrack, but with little success. We are looking for track plans of Marklin track, Micro-Trains track, flex track and even module configurations. Ztrack is also looking to add a column for someone who can help us create track plans, associated art and graphics as well as conceptual plans. If you are interested, please contact us off-line. The second area we would like to focus on is module clubs and modules. We would like to see at least one article in every issue of Ztrack dedicated to modules. This would include club news and a featured module of the issue. I think modules are one of the most exciting aspects of Z today. I think it is important we share the work of module builders with the Z community. The November/December 2007 issue of Ztrack will feature Robert Ray's Time Saver Module. We hope this article will be a kick off to regular module features. The third area is increased coverage of European Z layouts. About 40% of our readers are interested in European prototypes. We need to increase our coverage of these areas. Finally, we are looking for more how-to and instructional articles. We see so much amazing work being done on the forums, that it is amazing. I do hope and encourage those doing this work to submit articles to Ztrack. A large portion of our readers do not follow the forums and we would love to share your creations with our complete readership. Ztrack is also working to increase our page count and content. Deane Shepard is working extremely hard to bring in new advertisers, which will allow Ztrack to grow and increase our content. This is not necessarily an easy task, but Deane is already doing an exceptional job. Thank you Deane! The last area I want to talk about is the web. John Cubbin has created two outstanding websites for us. Ztrack.com is a beautiful site that promotes Ztrack incredibly well. We are planning to increase content on the site. John has visions of creating an HTML newsletter and we will be working on that in the new year. Ztrack Center is our new retail web site. Look for new products to appear in 2008. Ztrack is in the process of bringing in two new lines from Germany, which will add almost 200 more products to the site. Thank you John for all of your hard work and dedication! Ztrack will continue to offer subscriber specials on AZL new releases and spec ial imprint cars from FR. We are also looking to continue special car runs with Micro-Trains. As we move into 2008, it looks like another exciting year for Z scale. Ztrack is growing and adapting as the scale grows. It is a wonderful time to be in Z! Happy New Year! Re: Is anyone maintaining the bolster pin color chart yet?
Paul,
Yes, I am maintaining the bolster pin chart. Maroon and yellow is still open. I have you reserved. I will need a check for $1,000 for processing and owning this coveted space. An annual maintenance charge of $250.00 is also required. Please make checks payable to cash. :) I am planning on posting the chart. One goal is to include more module information on Ztrack.com as well as the Z-Bend Track site. On another note, I am officially retiring the Silver, Gold position. This was Bill K's and I feel this color combination should always have his name associated with it. Lajos,
my best to you for the big job you've taken on to coordinate the Z-Bend modules for NTS-08. I'm pleased to know there will be a "gazillion" fellow zscalers at this show. Subject: [Z-Bend_Track] Hallmark ¨C Lionel ¨C Veranda ¨C Turbine - Tender Hello everyone Some info first, then a question for you at the end. I did a search in the archives on each of the words in the subject of this e-mail but had no results relating to the 2006 Hallmark Christmas ornament model of the Lionel O-scale model of the Union Pacific's Veranda Gas Turbine locomotive and tender. On some list or another I can remember reading about this ornament and how it was very close to correct Z scale, being just a little bit larger than Z, but looking pretty ok when sitting on the rails among real Z models. As it comes, it's wheel flanges will just make it and fit down between the rails of the track. In the past I did some measuring and did the calculations as to the exact scale of this ornament but can't recall the exact figures now, but I think it worked out that a true Z model would be just about exactly 5 inches long for just the loco (no tender) and the Hallmark ornament was 5 1/4 inches long, pretty close. Also I have some pictures that I saved from somewhere on the net of this loco and tender on some nicely ballasted track with some UP diesels in the shots and it looks very respectable, even though the handrails under the veranda are molded in relief and not free- standing like they'd be on a true model railroad engine model. I've done some tinkering around with these ornaments, a Micro Trains GP-35, and a dial caliper and it looks to me like a real possibility that the GP-35 could be kit bashed into being able to power these Hallmark ornaments, much along the lines of how the N scale Con-Cor Veranda Turbine and U-50 are laid out, with the first and last trucks being the power units and the inner two trucks being just cosmetic floaters. The truck side frames of the Veranda unit would be used on the GP-35 truck mechanisms (the truck wheel bases are very close) and the tender truck side frames would be retained as well, with either new scratch-built bolsters and MT or Marklin wheel sets, or a lesser favored option of the original side frames as an application on top of a suitable wheelbase 4 or 6-wheel Z truck from something else. I'll likely tear into one MT GP-35 just for my own curiosity and as a challenge to myself as to weather I could pull off such a conversion, but IF successful, would anyone have an interest in my making some of these for sale? No idea right now of what the cost could be, but if I get a process down, I could try and keep it reasonable while earning some green to support my hobby. With some of the rolling stock that is out there now from MT and Pennzee and others, a Veranda Turbine typically followed by UP's pair of GP-35s for additional power, and a long string of time-sensitive fast-freight cargo like 40' steel mechanical 60s era reefers would sure be an awesome site coursing down a long mainline run of Z-Bend Track modules. That's the image that always pops into my head anyway, when I think about this project. I hope I can bring it to pass. All opinions, thoughts, and comments are welcome. Re: Is anyone maintaining the bolster pin color chart yet?
John,
The bolster pins are the two plastic pieces that hold the trucks of a car onto the body. The are rounded and smooth, so painting these is fast and easy. Using a paint pen can make the job much faster. Orange and maroon is open so I will put your name down for it. Photo Contest
Hi everyone
There a new photo contest on Z CENTRAL STATION sponsored by me Hobby Crafts N More. The Theme is WEATHERING so let see some of the dirty building, engines, boxcars, etc. The Prizes is the Timecast Airport Terminal, which is 6mm and is close to Z Scale. Z Scale = 1:220 & 6mm = 1:260 6mm scale buildings are intended for use with historical miniatures games, and are compatible with ranges of miniature figures produced by a number of different manufacturers - most of whom seem to have different ideas about how tall the average person is! In order to ensure maximum compatibility with the different figure sizes, they have designed their buildings and accessories to an average scale of 1:260. In real life there are buildings that differ in size too. Codes change from year to year changing ceiling heights. This causes buildings to be different heights. In some cases there are large buildings that have been added on to where the floors don't match up from one end of the building to the other. If you want to see pictures and a compaerison of the differenece in 6mm and Z Scale go to then go to the hobby page ( green button at the top) and go to FAQ page (yellow link at the side) and see Then try is win the kit Good luck Kevin Hobby Crafts N More www.hobbycraftsnmore.com |
Bill K car
David George
I too received my Bill K. Car today and realized that I will need a 2nd car as "ZBend Track" is on one side and "Bill K 2007" on the other. When I display the car(s) at shows, on a prominent siding of the Golden~Blackhawk&Central City, I'll want to present the complete message with two cars.
So , Chad, my check is in the mail for a second car if there are any left after the initial purchase period. If none are left then keep the $ and let Sue K. decide its destination. Cordially, Mister Dave Spring, Tex. |
