Hi Maureen
Ancestry have the parish registers, which include baptisms, for Bradford, St Peter (Bradford Cathedral) from 1596 & Bradford, Wibsey Chapel from 1674. There was no civil registration of births prior to July 1837.

Hi Listers,
I am trying to verify the birth /baptism of the following children who were born to Henry FARRER and Sussanah FARRER (neeJOBSON) They were married in Bradford Church in 1757. The children were. William Benjamin b.1761 Christiana John Joseph. I have verified the death of both Benjamin and John and marriages of both John and Christiana. Benjamin never married. Thanks, Maureen in Oz. |

Tracing merchant seamen in the 19th century
Trying to trace a merchant seaman in the later parts of the 19th century is fairly difficult. There are no records of service, ‘pouches’, or central records. If you know the name of ship, then you can trace their service back through crew lists and agreements but otherwise you need to consider other avenues. ? Fortunately, for officers, there are registers of certificates for masters and mates. These give certificate number, date and place of birth and date and place of where certified. They also give details of voyages. ? These records are now searchable on Discovery by name, details of birth or certification. This is thanks to our offsite volunteers.? ? Re: Hannah JACKSON
Hi Birth certificates didn't come in until 1837, unfortunately, when civil registration was introduced. Before this time you're relying on parish registers.? I couldn't find Hannah and Robert in the 1851 census - but there is a Hannah and Thomas ALVIN in Sunk Island - he's the innkeeper (maybe Robert's brother?)? I found Hannah and Robert ALVIN in the 1861 census in Paull at?Land Cottage, Saltagh Lands, Paull, Patrington.? Robert was 61? - so born 1800, in Paull and an agricultural labourer Hannah was 62 - so born 1799 and gives her birthplace also as Paull - so that gives a timeframe and means Hannah would be about 23 when Grice was born and about 29/30 years old when she married Robert.? There is a Hannah GREENSIDES daughter of Elizabeth JACKSON baptised in Paull on January 12 1796. Unfortunately she was buried the same day. The only other one I could find around that time was Hannah WATSON - daughter of Ann JACKSON baptised in Keyingham December 20, 1798. That's a better fit time-wise - and - Hannah ALVIN died aged 84 in Hull in 1883. Her death was registered in Sculcoates - reference March Q 1883 9D 125 - but Hannah ALVIN of Hull was buried on Feb 14 1883 at Keyingham parish church. Sounds to me like Hannah being taken 'home' for burial.? There are three Ann JACKSONs baptised in Keyingham in time to be Hannah's mum 1772 Ann - June 9, daughter of William (would be 26 when Hannah was born) 1777 Ann 19 Jan - daughter of Thomas (21 when Hannah born) 1780 Ann Nov 26 - daughter of Marmaduke (18 when Hannah born) There's also a burial in 1805 Ann - daughter of John and Mary JACKSON, July 20 aged 24 - so that gives a birth date of 1871. She would be 17 when Hannah was born. Ann JACKSON married George WALKER November 13, 1800 at Keyingham.... I wonder, though, if? Ann had a baby daughter, if they wouldn't have just called her WALKER - rather than her growing up as JACKSON?? Ann JACKSON married Henry Parker of Hollym - June 4,1811 at Keyingham I also found in the York Herald of Tuesday April 12, 1887 a death notice for Grice's wife... JACKSON - on the 9th inst, Jane wife of Grice JACKSON at Withernsea aged 66.? Hope that's some help best wishes Jane? I am trying to find the birth of Hannah JACKSON?mother of Grice JACKSON?and to see if the Hannah JACKSON?who married Robert ALVIN?is the same person. Any help appreciated ? 1843?? 21 Feb 1843 Marriage Grice JACKSON?Servant living @ Paull, father Mathew GRICE, Servant, to Jane DUNN, Servant of Sigglesthorne, father William DUNN Labourer - Parish Church in Sigglesthorne- witnesses Prudence CHAPMAN and George MOOR ? ?1821, 22 Apr Grice JACKSON?bap *(IGI) born Owthorne, mother Hannah JACKSON?spinster ??????????????? #123 Grice son of Hannah JACKSON spinster, ceremonies performed by Chas BARKER curate ? 1822 Grice JACKSON?living at Barb Lane Owthorne in one of 2 cottages left on the cliff. ? 1829 June 6 Robert ALVIN?of Welwick Patrington married Hannah JACKSON?of Welwick Patrington. Banns said living at Sunk Island ? The reason I think the Hannah JACKSON who married to Robert ALVIN is Grice’s mother is because in some bios of Grice he said he was living at Cherry Cobb Sands where his parents farmed a smallholding. Grice age 5 or 9 left Owthorne and went to Cherry Cobb Sands. If I can find Hannah's birth certificate I think I will have the answer |

Re: Joseph BENTLEY 1814-1874
开云体育Thanks for your musings, Lin. There are definitely two Josephs born around the same time in the same area. However, the clincher for me is the 1851 census where Lidian (Lydia Ann BENTLEY) is living with her father and his second wife, Mary WESTERMAN and he’s a wool carter.Joseph’s death certificate says he was ‘an overlooker at a woolen mill’ as he was in the 1861 and 1871 census. So that rules out the shoemaker, Joseph and makes it likely that the Scholemoor burial is the shoemaker. I think I have the right one and that Jonathan and Mary are his parents. Just working through the permutations of your musings has been very helpful and I’m very grateful you took the time to look at all that information. Julie

My musings.
?
Joseph BENTLEY son of Joseph and Martha ? Baptised 29 May 1814 Batley, son of Joseph and Martha, clothier, abode Morley ? 1816 birth of brother Manoah 1826 death of mother Martha 1827 father, clothier married Sarah BRUMLEY, widow ? 1841 census Morley: Joseph, 55, carrier Sarah, 50 Joseph, 25, shoemaker (unmarried???) Mary, 10 ? 1847 burial of stepmother Sarah BENTLEY ? 1851 census West Ardsley, Joseph, visitor, 37, shoemaker (marital status not stated) GLASSELL family ? 1851 census Morley, father Joseph, common carrier living with his dau Mary and son in law Benjamin DRIVER ? 1841-1853. Posssible marriages of Joseph BENTLEY?? as Joseph a widower in 1853 ? 1853 Joseph widower, shoemaker married Hannah ILLINGWORTH, ?father Joseph, cloth maker signed his name 1853 Feb 13, Joseph, 38, widower. Clothier, father Jonathan, made his mark ? 1855 son Manoah born MMN ILLINGWORTH??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? 1857 death of father Joseph ? 1861 census Bradford Joseph, 42, shoemaker, born Batley, wife Hannah, 37 son Manoah, 5 ? 1871 census Bradford Joseph, mar, 57, cordwainer, Hannah, 47, Manoah, 15 ? Most, if not all, trees on Ancestry have Joseph dying on 13 Mar 1874 Morley (which is the date you have for your Joseph). There is another more likely candidate (for Joseph son of Joseph and Martha) whose death was registered Bradford (where he was in 1871) Jun Q 1874 aged 60 Findagrave memorial Joseph 23 May 1874 Scholemoor Crem. (spouse Hannah), child Manoah appears to back my theory ? 1881 census Bowling Hannah, 58, widow Manoah, 27, his wife Hannah, grandson, Joseph 5, granddau Sophia, 1 ? Noted that your Joseph named one of his sons Jonathan after his father, the other Joseph, a son Manoah after his brother. ? To me there are two Joseph BENTLEYs. ? My thoughts anyway.:) ? Lin ? ? |
