Re: Joseph BENTLEY 1814-1874

Thanks for your musings, Lin. There are definitely two Josephs born around the same time in the same area. However, the clincher for me is the 1851 census where Lidian (Lydia Ann BENTLEY) is living with her father and his second wife, Mary WESTERMAN and he’s a wool carter.

Joseph’s death certificate says he was ‘an overlooker at a woolen mill’ as he was in the 1861 and 1871 census. So that rules out the shoemaker, Joseph and makes it likely that the Scholemoor burial is the shoemaker. I think I have the right one and that Jonathan and Mary are his parents.

Just working through the permutations of your musings has been very helpful and I’m very grateful you took the time to look at all that information.

Most, if not all, trees on Ancestry have Joseph dying on 13 Mar 1874 Morley (which is the date you have for your Joseph). There is another more likely candidate (for Joseph son of Joseph and Martha) whose death was registered Bradford (where he was in 1871) Jun Q 1874 aged 60
Findagrave memorial Joseph 23 May 1874 Scholemoor Crem. (spouse Hannah), child Manoah appears to back my theory

?

1881 census Bowling
Hannah, 58, widow Manoah, 27, his wife Hannah, grandson, Joseph 5, granddau Sophia, 1

?

Noted that your Joseph named one of his sons Jonathan after his father, the other Joseph, a son Manoah after his brother.

?

To me there are two Joseph BENTLEYs.

?

My thoughts anyway.:)
