My Vintage Tank Cars
Here's most of my tanker fleet. Front left to back right: Varney welded Koppers, two Varney Sinclair's (same number), a plastic Athearn AT&SF, a Mantua metal Hercules Powder, an immaculate Laconia Dow Chemical and a Red Ball Monsanto (not built particularly well). Jeff jppellas@... |

My apologies for It has been over a month and I just haven't gotten going again on the roundhouse or layout. I know I need to put in the bridge so I can run the long Mainline track. That would be nice to get done first. We'll see if I can get started once more. I do hope so.

?????? ** Lehigh and Susquehanna Railway ** ??????????????? ** ?Locomotive service area? ** ·?????? ???Focusing on the details seen in the photo you can count the number of stalls by the exhaust stacks see in the photo. You can count 5 stalls then the turntable entrance stall, then the remaining 10 stalls. Of the large decorated roof vents 7 can be seen on even numbered stalls 2, 4, 6, 8, 10,12, and the last being odd number 15. These vents are of a highly detailed style. They have at least 8 flat louver vented sides to them with a wider base and overhanging roof also showing 8 sides with nice molding along the edges. ·?????? * A drawing of the PRR Mount Pleasants yard roundhouse shows a very similar 8 sided roof vent. You can see just how detailed this style of vent is. ·?????? * The locomotive door sections have round roofed doors lined with raised brickwork arches which come together on some sort of keystone and then brickwork continues down a brick column between each door to the ground. The door sections show layered brick work between the door arches and the roof line with teeth. ?Corner square Brick columns topped by a raised brick ledge with teeth that blends in with the roof line teeth. the building has a overhanging roof lined with raised brick teeth all the way around the Roundhouse. The brickwork on the sides shares the same detail as the front and back. |

?Here is 3 photos one showing the grouping of shops behind the roundhouse, another the detail of the side of the roundhouse, and the last the detail around the locomotive doors. Sorry about deleting the first of this message. it just wasn't right.

In both photos you see my masonite base for the roundhouse. The turntable is a Kibri oneand is a scale 85 foot armstrong table. I have made it to HO scale and it is big. The overhang will be filled with a triangular shaped fill piece.

Don't forget about Thomas models, they made all metal tank cars, I have 2.? I have the highly sought after Roma Wine, six dome, and a Philgas car.? The frames are metal casting as are the domes and ends.? The tank is a rolled piece of sheet metal.? They made
these cars in O scale as well as HO.

Hi Bob, I am not sure, but I don't recall varney making metal tank cars. If they did, finding some would be a big problem. They had plastic body car made from the 1960 on, with metal frames in a large selection of road names, different numbers, and colors. They changed the line to all plastic parts and kept the nicely done tanks. Athearn along with Champ, Silvine, and maybe some else I can't recall made all metal tank cars. Mantua made them but covered the tank with different decorated embossed paper tank coverings. Silver streak had a metal frame but nothing else was metal except the dome (wood tank with printed metallic paper covering and cast metal dome).? ?In varney I have 26 or 27 different ones.? ?frank |
Varney Tank Cars???
I am familiar with the Varney box cars and reefers of the early and mid 50's.
I have some with metal sides and wood floors and roofs. Then I have some with metal sides and plastic floors and roofs. One is reefer wit plastic floor and roof. It is in a yellow box. It was purchased in 1955. I was at Edwards AFB at the time. What I am wondering about is Varney metal tank cars of the same period. I have seen some Varney metal tank cars with cast metal frames. What should I expect when looking at Varney tank cars of the early 50? I'm trying to relive my childhood! Bob Macklin Seattle, Wa |
A Scratch Build of the Ashley PA roundhouse circular 1880.
toptrain2100
Ashley PA Locomotive roundhouse; Build by the Lehigh and Susquehanna Railway then leased by the "Central Rail Road of New Jersey" who's abbreviated initials were
"C. R. R. of N. J." A scratch build of this building in how it appeared in 1880. My drawing shows a size comparison with "Locomotive Erection Shop" with the interconnecting tracks from turntable to shop. ? The only view of this shop was sent to me to help with the build this first time I tried to make it and started with the more difficult erecting shop. Other views are in the book by Benjamin L. Bernhart on stations, structures, and marine equipment of the C. R. R. of N. J. . I show to scale a 75 foot turntable while the original drawing showed a 70 foot one.? ?I started on this build yesterday. I am trying to make the round house with its turntable on its own masonite platform for strength like those old Faller HO ready made buildings sold in the 1950's before they made plastic kits of many of the same buildings. I have 5 or 6 of these old Faller buildings that are still after 70 years solid. Only the about 90 foot HO scale station is in need of a re-detailing.? ? well this build starts here.? frank Note 1: The alignment seen here will most likely not be possible because to my table size. The turntable entrance through a rear locomotive door through stall #6 can't be done.? I don't know for sure till the building is more complete which stall will be used for entrance to turntable.?? frank |
