I have 2 of the penn line decapods #5749 is a stock Penn Line. The one nearest #3446 is a Cary conversion. Both with long haul tenders and detailed differently. I'll put a few pictures in . They can use some touching up after 10 years in their boxes.frank |

AHM calcium carbide car
Hi folks,
I've been lurking on this list for some time, soaking up lots of interesting info.? A friend of mine, who is not on this list asked me a question and I think this is the place to ask.? He recently acquired an AHM calcium carbide car and wanted to know if there was actually a prototype for it.? If so, does anyone know what sort of containers it would carry? Thanks, Elliot Fishbein |
Re: Mantua side rod screws / open pole motor question
Bowser is out of the steam game, but they may still have some shouldered screws that could work.
You don't have to change the motors.? Isolate the brushes from the motor frame. I slide some insulation from 22 gauge wire over the spring wire that holds the brushes tight.? See?for an example.? Mantua also made a can motor adaptor around 1990.? It's a plastic frame that holds a can motor at the correct angle.? You might find one at a show or on eBay. |

开云体育All Mantua siderod screws were brass hexhead with a shoulder for the thickness of siderods being fastened and had 0-80 screw threads to attach it to the wheel. Slotted steel screws may be used if the head and shoulder are the correct size and length with the 0-80 screw threads. I have used both. You can also use an 0-80 SLOTTED PAN HEAD SCREW WITH A FULL SCREW THREAD BODY AND CUT A BRASS TUBE SLEEVE THE RIGHT LENGTH FOR THE SIDEROD THICKNESS TO BEAR ON, WITH A LITTLE CLEARANCE SPACE UNDER THE HEAD OF COURSE. THIS APPLIES TO ALL THE MANTUA I EVER HANDLED EXCEPT FOR THE MAIN ROD/ECCENTRIC CRANK SCREW... THERE WERE SEVERAL VARITIES ON THAT DEPENDING ON THE SPACER AND E. CRANK DESIGN. MOST OF THEM CAN BE DONE WITH AN 0-80 FULL THREAD BODY LONG ENOUGH TO HOLD THE E. CRANK, ROD SPACER AND SIDEROD BEARING SLEEVE. Hoping you success... Re: MDC HOn3 Kit identification
Mike,
Welcome to the fun of Shays. I know I have 5 of them in both Ho & HoN3, 1 built (2 truck standard gauge) / 1 under construction (3 truck standard gauge) & 3 in the closet. If you replace the gear tower gears you can get a descent running engine. The NWSL kit numbers are- 3-truck Bull Gear upgrade kit#188-6 / Partial re-gear kit#187-6 / Re-gear kit# 186-6. I have used the 186-6 & 188-6 with good results so far.? The kits I have are all square 4x4x12" red in colored box & one brown box. I bought the red boxed ones in the late 90's. The brown box was given to me in 2009.? A word of advice if you can locate the book The MDC Shay Handbook : Author - Johnson : Publisher Oso Then a good light, magnification visor, and patience.?? |
Mantua side rod screws / open pole motor question
开云体育? Group I find that I need some advice or assistance. I have several (10) Mantua Orange box kits that I am in need of replacing side rod screws for. There is nothing more irritating than opening a factory plastic covered kit and finding they shorted you a screw. And since I have several to build still I am going to source some extras if I can find some. Anyone have any ideas on a source? Also all of these kits are open pole motored and I plan to operate then on an all DCC system. So its replace the motors also. But I haven’t found a source or cross reference for these motors. So I come to seek the advice of the group. ? Sincerely; Patrick Connell Sent from for Windows 10 ? |

Subject: [YardbirdTrains] you missed out on a interesting
video. ?
The
video had the locomotive, Fleischmann's 2-8-2T? 97-374, with it being
viewed from a few different angles as it pulled it's two clearstory roof 60 foot
passenger cars along. First loop shows train at station and starts up moving
towards camera. As it get close I raise up and let it pass up, under, and around
the east turn following it along the back wall towards the west turn. The train
now ducks behind the 8 stall roundhouse, then the 3 stall one, goes out of sight
but I get it again in view as it come out from behind the roundhouse area.
Staying with it but in front I pace the train set making it look still and the
background is moving, I lead it in this manner back to the east turn. I only
shortly follow it in the back track walking to the west turn and get the train
as it is entering the turn behind the roundhouses. Following it along behind the
roundhouses to the front straight track being this time alongside above and a
little behind the train set as it races along like you are in a helicopter
filming this almost real train as it rushes towards the east turn where the
video ends. To bad you didn't get it. I tried. I spent more time waiting for
this video to process them anywhere else. I guess two and a half loops is just
to much. I guess you'll just have to look at a still picture and make believe
like child would.?
