Re: Connecting QY100 to Computer Via USB to Serial Adapter?
Hi Jim although coupling vintage with vintage is fascinating indeed, I recommend using a cheapish MIDI-to-USB adapter: I also tried for both 100 and 700, and something like this would solve the problem. Keep the switch on 100's back set to MIDI. I'm conveniently using this and a Windows 7 laptop with the 100 Data Filer. Best |
Connecting QY100 to Computer Via USB to Serial Adapter?
Hello - I'm looking to use the QY100's Bulk Dump utility to save song data to my computer, which is an old Apple PowerBook G3 (running OS 9.2.2). Since this mac and the QY are of a similar vintage, it should be a good option ... So I installed the QY 100 Data Filer software, and then added it as a setup within OMS (2.3.8). Also, when setting this up, I chose the 'Serial Port' option within the Data Filer's settings ... However, shortly after this, I realized the computer doesn't have a serial port (or a printer port). Instead, it happens to be the first PowerBook they introduced with USB ports, and when adding those Apple removed the serial port. So I found a USB to Serial adapter (Keyspan USA-28X) online that runs on OS 9.x, and am thinking this might do the trick. However, I'm not sure how OMS (and/or the Data Filer) will handle this scenario ... Will the QY100 be recognized by the PowerBook via the 'Serial Port' setting even though I'm actually using a USB port on the Mac? to connect to the serial port on the QY100? I'm hoping this will work, but am hesitant to purchase the USB to Serial adapter until I have a little more confidence in this solution! Thanks for any advice, Jim |
Re: Getting QY100 Songs into an Rm1x
Hi Eric, Thanks so much for the excellent information. I wish I would have known all this back in 2004, since I would've wanted to record in multi-track format. In my naivety, though, I just turned on the QY and started recording without changing anything ... So unless what you're describing are the default settings, then I guess I'm looking at one bloated track... I'll know for sure soon enough (hopefully), but in any case this is super helpful to know whenever I want to try this again! Best regards, Jim

Hmm, I don't think it can make use of a database, it's an index of separate HTML files. Because there are over 4000 files, I wasn't able to upload them on the groups.io File section, so I had to do it via FTP, then zip and unzip.

I uploaded the contents of the mbox files on a free host: 1999 to 2003: 2003 to 2013: 2013 to 2019: I also uploaded all three here as a zip, if anyone wants to give it a more permanent home, maybe even make a nicer index page : It's possible , but hopefully Google will do it by itself and people will be able to find info on there. One last thing, some messages were skipped because of a lack of title or some other reason. It looks like they were mostly spam or unrelated to the topic. First mbox error messages during export: |
Re: SmartMedia Card unreadable in QY100 after opening in Win10
Hmm, that's a good point, I'll try getting a 32Mb card too.
I can still read and format the 128Mb card in Windows and Linux, though, and from what I read in my research, it's common that the USB readers corrupt some sort of layer and make it unreadable on devices like cameras. I ended up ordering a Microtech CameraMate, they are one of four readers that don't corrupt the card, and they can be used to do the low-level format. Apparently, it has to be done on Windows 2000, though... to be continued. |
Re: SmartMedia Card unreadable in QY100 after opening in Win10
Bill,
Probably just a bad card, you might find getting another one on eBay makes the issues totally go away. Generally speaking a 128mb card is the max but that size is more prone for issues on a QY (including *potentially* slower reads and writes) so I usually play it safe and go with a 32mb card since that is still a HUGE amount of storage for MIDI/QY files (since MIDI/QY are generally very, very small) and 32mb cards are pretty cheap. On the other hand, in my RS7K I use a 128mb XD card with a XD-> Smartmedia adaptor and it has always worked flawlessly (and the bigger size is needed due to ability to load samples). I had been meaning to try the combo on the QY, but I never bothered since I have so many 32mb, 16mb, and 8mb cards for the QY100...so storage has never been an issue. 开云体育Bill,Your effort ?is greatly appreciated. ?(I have had that on my todo list for sometime, but have not had the time to look into it). ?In any case, PLEASE make sure that if you upload them you are not re-creating a thread for every yahoo conversation (as that would generate an email for each post to many of the groups members...which would not just be annoying, but also could potentially fill up their mailboxes with 1000s of messages!)? I think a better place for all those messages might be a searchable archive that could be placed into the files section and then linked to (via a permanently pinned thread in the group). ? ? Another option would be to load them into a groups.io WIKI for the QY70/QY100, though I am unsure what the format would be to automate it’s creation/loading of the messages in an organized format.? Of course, I am open to any/all alternatives you (or others) might think would be a better solution. ?? Re: Getting QY100 Songs into an Rm1x
Jim,
?
The QY will record/playback to multiple tracks simultaneously if you have it set up properly… Or more specifically if you had it set up properly when you used it as a MIDI recorder.
?
The settings in particular that you need to look at are via the following button sequences:
1) Set MIDI Channel to ALL
(From song view)
Menu->F4 (Utility)
Menu-F4 (Fingered Zone)
Then Right Arrow to
MIDI Channel (should be set to ALL by hitting Minus(-) button several times as needed...Range is ALL, 1,2,3....16)
?
2) Set Echo Back to OFF:
(From Song view)
Menu->F4 (Utility)
Menu-F2 (MIDI)
Arrow to Echo Back and set to OFF
?
3) You may also need to change some other settings in the MIDI screen in step two depending on your setup. ?
? ? ?For example, if you recorded to a pattern, you would need to set Pattern out channel to 1-8 or 9-16 (but only if the RM1X cannot handle the pattern’s normal record/playback channels (which are 17 to 24)).
?
4) ALWAYS Double-Check the hardware switch on the QY and make sure it is set to MIDI. ?(It can get switched by accident so it is always a good idea to check it).
?
Lastly, since the RM1X was also made by Yamaha, you may need to similarly setup the above on that unit (particularly Midi-channel/OMNI mode). Of course, the steps would very likely be different on the RM1X. ?The most important is that the REC-Monitor field NOT be set to YES/TRUE, since doing that will force all incoming MIDI data to the currently selected track on the RM1X.
?
It should be noted that if the QY70 was not setup similarly to the above during the recording phase (to the QY70) then the data might all be located in one track, if that is the case then I am not sure how to split it back up into multiple tracks/channels (beyond doing it manually). ??
?
Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Eric

Re: SmartMedia Card unreadable in QY100 after opening in Win10
Hi Eric,
Thanks for your reply. My research ended up bringing me to similar conclusions, specifically the "low level format" solution on some forum. I tried using , but it didn't help... so it might necessitate a hardware solution. I found some other clues but it seems very complicated, so I might just cut my losses and focus on making music. |

开云体育?Hi Bill, I think you may be running into a known issue that sometimes occurs with Smartmedia cards. ?Apparently, it is fixable and even the data is recoverable. Re: Getting QY100 Songs into an Rm1x
Hi Mark, Thanks so much for the replies - and especially for digging up that Gearslutz link I should have found w/ Google myself!? As it happens, the Rm1x can import SMF files, and if the file is Type 0 it includes a job that will 'explode' that file out to separate tracks ... I guess the only QY-specific question now is whether a multi-track performance on the Rm1x would be recorded onto 1 track on the QY or retain its multi-track nature while recording. If it's the latter, then I expect the QY should export as SMF Type 1. And if it's all on 1 track, then it appears some extra steps will be needed to get back to multi-track format on the Rm1x. In any case, this is helpful info. and I'm glad that one way or another it looks like these long-lost song ideas might actually be retrievable :) Thanks again, Jim

SmartMedia Card unreadable in QY100 after opening in Win10
Hello all, I just got a QY100 that came with a 128Mb SM Card. I purchased a and tested it initially on my Linux Mint machine. It detected the reader, but not the card, so I tried it on Windows 10, and it mounted it properly. I was able to back up the files that were on the disk. |
Re: Getting QY100 Songs into an Rm1x
Hi Jim I guess it depends on whether the RM1X can import SMF .
You could try by exporting a QY100 song in SMF format to a PC/Macbook (maybe via smart media card slot in the QY100) and then try and import via the USB floppy drive to the RM1X. If the RM1X doesn't like the SMF format you could change the format on your macbook using a free software like GNMDFMT and try to import again |
Getting QY100 Songs into an Rm1x
Hello QY group! A long time ago, I recorded some real-time 'jamming' on a Rm1x into a QY100. Basically, I had a style (in Pattern Mode) ready on the Rm1x, and connected the MIDI out from the Rm1x into the MIDI in on the QY100 ... And then I recorded the MIDI output of the Rm1x into the QY100 while using the real-time controls on the Rm1x ... So I was essentially using the QY100 like a Roland MC-50 or Alesis MMT-8 to simply record what was happening on the Rm1x. I recorded a handful of performances like this, until such point as I finished one of these 'songs' and noticed that the QY100 had stopped recording and was showing a message saying that it was full. And now I'm ready to (finally) revisit these performances and see what I actually have. I figure the most logical (and easiest) option will be to import these files into the Rm1x ... But I'm curious about how this would be done. I've been having a look online and at the QY100 manual, and it looks like I'd want to use the 'Save' function and save as a SMF to a memory card. Alternately, it appears I could use the 'Bulk Dump' function and import to my computer ... So first I'd be curious if anyone has advice on which of these options will be best in this case. And then after that, I'm not sure how I would get this data back into the
Rm1x. Although I do have a USB 2.5" floppy drive that I can connect to an old MacBook Pro ... But before going further, I'm hoping someone on this list has done a similar thing and can provide some insight. Since I've only really used the QY for this purpose, any advice will be appreciated! Thanks, Jim |
Re: QY100 display light
You hit the nail on its head...
I'm using a headlamp... I'have a QY700 since a few years, and the idea is to use the younger brother as a sketchpad when not in thew studio... was the lesser QYs dubbed as "walkstations" twanty years ago? Trouble is that I'm well used to the one-acre, backlit screen of the QY700 ;) I'm ordering the front light for the Game Boy Advance, have already checked that - there is enough room to place the LED diffuser on top of the LCD panel - light will come from bottom margin of LCD, so possibliy "song" and "pattern" names will be less readable, whereas mixers cursors and step sequencer bars will full alight - no need to use optical clear glues or to tamper with the original display - alas, the Game Boy Advance display is a few millimeters smaller than the QY100/QY70 one, but can live with it - there are plenty of places where to solder the power wires fir the LED plate At present, I plan to have the front light always turned on, although the microcontoller solution using [SHIFT] [F3] is as clever as complex... More to come, I'll check in when I'll made the modification, the front light will take a month or so from China to Italy... viruses allowing ;) On 05/02/20 15:37, squishy via Groups.Io wrote: I have agonised with this over the years.[Edit: deleted useless signature] |
