Intonation on DX7 6
I've been wanting to hear for myself if the "Railsback" adjustments make a difference. I finally took some time to make two sound files, one which uses pure equal temperament and the other which incorporates "railsback" adjustments, using the chart linked earlier that came from a Yamaha digital piano manual. Folloing are the two links. The timbre used is a pretty common variant of a DX7 string synth patch. It's being played by a Java-based FM synth that I wrote. http://adonax.com/psychoacoustics/equaltemperament_stringsynthdrone.wav http://adonax.com/psychoacoustics/railsback_stringsynthdrone.wav 6 seconds of a low drone: A1 (midi 33, 55 Hz) 6 second drone of a high drone added, A6 (midi 93, 1760 Hz) then an arpeggio that spans A2 to A5 comes in. With the "railsback" version, the pitch adjustments range from -8 cents for the low A1 to +9 cents for the high A6. The difference between the two tracks is pretty subtle! I can hear it most readily when running both files at the same time, but flipping (solo/mute) back and forth between them quickly. I find it's easiest to distinguish the pitch difference between the high drones. It does seem to me that the "railsback" version sits a little easier, somehow. But I wonder if this high string synth would sound still better if it were yet a few cents sharper. There's some detuning built into the patch, but the Op stack which predominates is a pure 1 : 1 : 4 (where 1 is the carrier and 1 and 4 are modulators stacked in series). The other stack is a "feedback" loop with the pitch set via a 0.998 factor (i.e., for 440 Hz, the detuned stack is 439.12 Hz, and in that region, 0.247 Hz is 1 cent). I think its overtones phase with the main stack overtones more than they directly affect the perceived pitch. Maybe this stack does have an impact on the sense of the octaves. But I'm not at all clear how, especially since the exact same patch is being used for all the notes being played. I think the internal phasing of the timbre that results would tend to make clashes between the overtones and fundamentals of concurrent notes less prominent, as there is a baseline of considerable timbral activity regardless of the exact pitches being played. So, is it worth the trouble to correct for the octave stretch? IDK. I think it depends on the context. The producer (and the musicians involved) need to use their best judgment. Sometimes if a note is slightly "off" or "pitchy" it actually works better. A subliminally sharp note might give it a bit of edge or assertiveness, a subliminally flat note might add a bit of despondency or passivity that fits the moment.

V50 SSU (sound source) patches? 5
Hi all, After making Sound Source patch videos for the DX7iiFD and TX81Z I am now on to the V50. I found the first 4 disks online. Quite good! But disks 5 and 6 have not turned up. Has anyone found them? See attached from the old advertising (thanks to MIDI tech guy UK for his help). V505 Down Under Collection V506 Urban/Pop Industrial? -- Check out my DX7iiFD/D patch Demos!

DX7 key grease? 2
Hi all, I bought some secondhand keys to fill in some missing spots on my second-hand DX7. I want to clean them before installing them into the keybed as they are very dirty, though I'm concerned the existing grease on the keys will wash off. I'd rather clean them fully anyway as even the grease has accumulated quite a bit of dirt. Does anyone have key grease recommendations? I've read from a couple different sources (here and here) that white lithium grease works fine. Open to all suggestions. Thanks!

Intonation on DX7 37
I've been reading about the "Railsback curve". Is there a way to implement this on a DX7? For those not familiar, this refers to deviations to the mathematically pure 2:1 ratio for octaves that are often implemented by piano tuners. I'm curious about this, in part because of intonation issues when playing my oboe along with recorded DX7 parts. The higher notes of the DX7 sound progressively flatter compared to what I'm naturally playing on my acoustic instrument. I've been working to adjust my acoustic instrument's pitch to accommodate, but from what I've recently been reading about "subjective octaves" (that for orchestral instruments, they may in fact have a stretch-octave curve similar to the piano's Railsback curve), I'd like to experiment with having the DX7 accommodate my acoustic instrument, instead. DX7 Special Edition ROM splash screen text edit? 4
Hi there, I opened up the DX7 SER7 .bin file in a hex editor and was wondering, is it possible to change the splash screen text from WELCOME TO DX7 SPECIAL EDITION to something else by editing the .bin in a hex editor? Assuming I stick to 16 characters per line. Thanks!

[TG77]change multi voices on the fly? 8
(maybe a weird question): on a TG77, is it possible to change the voices, which make up a multi “on the fly”, with e.g. program change or a sysex command? i tried to figure out from the manual/midi specs, but couldn?t reach a conclusion. maybe someone has already tried / knows an answer. background: on my TX816 i can send individual program changes to each module on its own channel and thus change the composition of it as a “multi instrument”. now i was wondering if i can achieve the same on a TG77. thanks in advance, best hans

Assistance needed 5
Good morning, all. I need your help. My DX7 is one of those from Japan with the lamp cord power cord. Recently, I've received this display and figured the battery was bad, so I changed it out, and reloaded the sounds from the cartridge to internal memory. My problem is that the memory does hold the sounds for more than maybe 10 minutes, and internal memory reads as you see here, and it doesn't emanate any sound. Strangely, in cartridge mode, all sounds are normal and they work fine. Has anyone seen this before and have any suggestions? Battery voltage reads 4.6 volts with a new battery. (As I recall, these models normally read more than the 3.3 volts for the CR2032) Thanks very much in advance! Kind regards, L. DX21 and DX27S chorus effect 13
Hi, The DX21 and DX27s have a very basic Stereo Chorus effect with only one parameter: On/Off. I am looking for someone owning one of these keyboards, who can record a simple single note testtone - for example an INITVOICE with the Chorus switched on - and share a WAV or MP3 with me. I need it to try to find the most accurate speed/depth setting when converting this effect for use in my Reface DX Legacy Project. The V50 that I own myself has much more FX - but no chorus ... BTW: Is the DX21 chorus identical to the DX27S chorus? Can someone tell from the schematics in the service manuals maybe? Thanks for any info and help, -- MT http://refacedx.martintarenskeen.nl

The 4OP to DX7 Conversion Project 28
Hi, Many of you may be familiar with one or more of my projects like DXconvert, The Reface DX Legacy Project (RDLP), or - from the early Atari ST days - YSEDITOR. These projects are still going. For example: Recently I released an update of DXconvert with greatly improved Korg DS8/707 data import. In all these years one of the frequently asked questions was: Can I load patches from 4-operator FM synths like DX100, TX81Z, FB01, or V50 in my DX7 (or compatible) synthesizer? The short answer has been "No you can't". The longer answer "Yes you can, but the data need to be converted first using DXconvert". Today I am proud to present my latest project, powered by DXconvert: "The 4OP to DX7 Conversion Project". It is the easiest answer to the above question. I have converted a huge number of SysEx patches and banks from numerous 4-operator (and some 2-operator) FM synths and they are now available and ready to use on my new website in the form of DX7 and DX7II compatible SysEx files. These SysEx data are accepted not only by DX7 and DX7II but by many other compatible FM synths, modules, and VST plugins. Using additional software these files could even be converted to SY/TG77, SY99, and even Montage file format. You can find the project here: http://4opdx7.martintarenskeen.nl (Manually enter the address in your browser if redirection fails.) Feedback, comments, bugreports, and donations are welcome :-) Enjoy! Martin Tarenskeen

TX802 + RAM5
Let’s not forget another great mode on TX802 (and TX81z) - Alternate Assign. It is interesting when individual outputs are used, and set to different stereo placement. It can be used with the same patch programmed slightly differently, or with different patches. BTW, TX81z has also even/odd mode. I liked to combine Alternate Mode on TX81z with MIDI effects - Chord, Delay or Pan, and with Microtuning. Of course it is also possible to combine DX7 II D, TX802, TX81z, DX11 (= V2) and V50 - all of them have even/odd mode. Daniel Forro

Even/odd configuration (= two whole tone scales) was probably inspired by pipe organ, where prospect pipes have C and C# side - two whole tone scales symmetrically located, to get well balanced stereo image. Daniel Forro

FS: TX802 + RAM5 9
Hi All, I've been paring down my gear lately, and thought I'd pass these items by the list before going to eBay or Reverb. Yamaha TX802 -- I have THREE of these synths. I'm keeping one for my own use. This one is in fully working condition. Physical condition is about 8.5/10 by my picky standards: minimal scratches/nicks on front, back, top, and bottom; menu pullouts are still in place and working; the only major issue is that the original owner shortened the power cord to about 1 ft (0,3m). I don't know the age of the battery: I'll replace it before the final sale, just to be safe. Looking to get $400 + shipping. I will ship almost anywhere Yamaha TX802 -- I bought this one as a spare/parts. It comes up with a partially corrupt display, and fails the self-test with "TEST 01 - RAM IC8 Error!" Scrolling through the self-tests and other menus, it seems like most of the functionality is OK; but the failing RAM causes corrupt display characters and references to sounds in the (non-loaded) memory cartridge. I don't know if this is an easy fix, or something more involved. Physical condition is 8/10 -- except the pullout menus are gone. I'd like to get $175 + shipping; offers will be considered. Yamaha RAM5 -- genuine item, with original box. I have a PDF of the brief owners' manual. I've seen two different versions of a 'AM5' online lately: this is the one with a Multi-Bank Mode switch on the front, and three more switches on the top for manual bank selection and memory protect. Everything works, including Multi-Bank Mode with a TX802. Physical condition is a 9/10. I'd like to get $75 + shipping. Please email me directly with questions. -- Regards, -BW Bruce Wahler Halfmoon-Switch.com? bw@... http://halfmoon-switch.com 978.597.7008 PLEASE NOTE: The AshbySolutions.com domain will be closed soon. MUTEGTR lost patch (is it XG or General MIDI ???)
The only reference I can find to MUTEGTR is Yamaha XG and General MIDI patches. None of which were DX7/TX816.

MUTEGTR lost patch
Looking for a lost obscure DX7/TX816 patch. It's called 'MUTEGTR' (named exactly like that) and it was used heavily in a show I grew up watching. I've seen a patch list printout from the composer's TX816 which confirms the patch name, but I've been unable to locate it. It needed to exist before 1992 at the absolute latest. The rest of the banks are a hodgepodge of patches, some also seemingly lost, some very common in the banks floating around today. My theory is the patch came from a bank on Usenet or similar service that, for one reason or another, missed the archiving trawl. I've manually looked through the original DX People archive and just about every single bank I can source on the web, as well as searched the limited patches.fm database, and nothing. It's definitely not 'MUT-GUITER', 'MUTEGUIT', 'Guit.Mute', or Patchman's 'Mute Gtr.' I've attached some sound examples of the patch, it's a constant rhythmic element. I'm hoping someone here recognizes it or has a copy? This is a really unique sound and finding the original is my only hope. Thanks!

Transmitting tx802 banks from an mo8 sequencer? 2
Hey folks. I'm in the process of going DAWless, but one sad drawback of this is that I can no longer send patch banks from the computer to my tx802. (One of the ONLY drawbacks tbh - otherwise I'm loving the lack of instantly available distractions). My Yamaha mo8 keyboard - a scaled back motif es essentially - does have an internal sequencer, however, and I'm wondering if it would be possible to send patch banks from it to the tx802 embedded in a .mid file somehow? I've tried it a couple different ways and haven't been able to get it to work. To the best of my knowledge I've made all the correct settings on the tx802, the mo8 manual is here for reference: https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/5/334005/mo6mo8_en_om.pdf I'll probably post this on the motif forum for advice as well, if there's still such a thing nowadays. Curtis.

DX7IIFD Manuals and Documentation. 30
First off, let me add this to the mix. Since Yahoo's "upgrade" of the groups pages I've been unable to access the files page on any group. I'm looking for just about everything on the DX7IIFD, without the E! expansion. Here's what I've got: 05 Voicing Parameter Reference Guide 06 Utility Parameter Reference Guide 07 Advanced Controller Usage 08 Realtime Parameter Change 10 Midi Technical Data and Charts 12 Creating New FM Voices 13 Understanding Fractional Scalings 14 Programming Fractional Scalings 15 Exploring the Preset Microtunings 16 The Mathematics & History of Microtuning 17 The Acoustics of Microtuning 18 The Psychoacoustics of Microtuning 19 Advanced Microtuning Data 20 Macrotuning That's about it, save for a PDF of the very last Aftertouch. So I'm missing some booklets there, along with the other stuff. Back when I could see I bought Howard Massey's great book on the DX7IIFD, so if I could find that it'd be cool too. Anyone out there have a source where I can grab the rest of what's available? Thanks for any help you can provide. Nyyki Sent from my HAL 9000 in transit to Jupiter

For the DX7II - "ADP-1"For sale
Please remove if not permitted: I sold my DX7II-FD a long time ago (Still have a TX-7 and FS-1R). I have an ADP-1 (adapter for original DX7 cartridges to be used with "DX7-II" versions). It's in great shape. $50 or best offer (you pay shipping). I don't have a need for this any longer, nor do I feel the need to charge the high prices that ebay wants for this adapter. I'm in Milwaukee. Thanks. Robert

DX7ii patches
Hi everyone, I did a fun little project where I adapted the factory patches from the DX5 so they'll play on the DX7iiFD. They both are bi-timbral and have performance memory, it was a natural fit. Demo below with link to patches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBtNEOuT1R4 --
