[sdiy] Fantasia patch for DX11/TX81Z/V50

Any chance to get a brief audio file to listen to somewhere? Alas I sold my TX81Z a long while ago. Thanks, Michael.

Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Synth pattern like guitar
6
Hi people! I'm curious about the synth part at the beginning of the song - the arpeggiated synth. "...another unusual part was created with a MIDIed synth stack for the main guitar part in the verses of "Everyone Wants To Rule The World". We MIDIed the two DX-7's with the (Prophet) T8, all roughly playing guitar sounds, and programmed the sequence, Stanley describes...then the guitar played the same part in the same register and triggered the sequence at the same time. It helped the synth sounds become a bit more organic with the sound of the guitar."-- It's kinda similar to ROM2B - 17. HARP-FLUTE, but not exactly equal. []' - Walter

DX21 and TX7
17
Hi All, I got a chance to get a DX21, and I already have a TX7 and was wondering does anyone know if the sliders on the DX21 will work on the TX7? Is there any functionality between the two? I've looked on the manual's but didn't see anything obvious. Thanks for any answers on this. Mark

QX7 manual search: Dear DX7 LIST
7
Dear DX7 LIST: I am searching for a manual for the QX7 sequencer and for info on how to use one. I would like to test one with the synths. Will it work across different brand names ? If any of the members wouldn't mind writing to me about the functions and capabilities of the unit I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any assistance, Pete Francz

KX88 repair
2
Hi everyone, I recently acquired a yamaha hx88 however it's a bit scuffed up. Everything seems to work except the battery (easy fix) and the top row buttons (A1~A16) My tester says the buttons and flat cables work. I see no visual problems. What could it be? A bad contact? Should I spray some deoxit? Does someone have any schematics? There service manual doesn't include them. DX7 question

Hello, Just bought an used DX7 and my question is about how to hook it up in logic pro x to record. Can you use a Midi to usb cable? Or do i just use the midi conections and the audio out in to my interface? Dora

Hi All... On a different topic..... assistance needed.....
13
Looking for some insight and assistance here. I picked up a Yamaha wireless bluetooth MD-BT01 Bluetooth Wireless MIDI Interface to use with my DX7. My understanding is that the device can/could be used with an instrument that has midi in and out sockets. It connects very easily of course, the IN to the midi IN and the OUT to the midi out on the keyboard. The purpose of this was to see if I could modify some of the DX7 sounds with my Ipad. I was able to download an app which allows the Ipad to recognize the Bluetooth device, but from there I'm lost. Is there a particular midi channel on the keyboard that I need to use? Or is this an exercise in futility in that the DX7 is just too old to be able to use this technology..... Thanks to all for your assistance Regards, L. David Covino CFE ALHC

Chorus chip on DX27s / PCB of DX100/DX27?
14
I'm trying to figure a bit out about the DX27s. As with the DX21 it has chorus, but then again, the DX27 and the DX100 do not, even though they share the same main PCB. According to https://www.polynominal.com/yamaha-dx21/index.html the DX21 uses a Panasonic MN 3209 as a chorus. But on my DX27s I could only find a MN 3204, which also is a BBD, but with 512 stages (instead of 256 on the MN 3209). That would mean the chorus should be slightly different - fine for me. Unfortunately I was not able to find good images of a PCB of DX27 or DX100, now I really wonder if IC 12 is populated on a DX27/100. I do have a PDF here called "DX27 - DX100 Overall Circuit Diagram", but according to that, IC 12 is a memory chip... But the chip numbers in that diagram have nothing to do with the silk screen numbers on the PCB anyway. Does anyone have a good picture of the PCB with the area around IC 12/13? Cheers, Florian

DX21 MIDI: can I request Operator Enable?
3
I'm playing a round with creating my own MIDI-Editor for - among others - the DX21. As I look through the manual, it appears that the DX21 (YS200 is no difference...) only transmits the firs 93 bytes (0-92) of the voice parameters. But Operator Enable and Operator Select are parameters 93 / 94. After a lot of digging, I was not able to find anything how to get these parameters from the synth. So I would be flying blind if I set these parameters from my program. Other voice editors seem to suffer the same issue, and when I read a voice from the DX21 with them and store it back, operator combinations can be shot. First I thought, these other editors are kinda crappy here, but if parameter 93 cannot actually be read, that would explain it. Is there a way to read those, or is my assumption correct that setting Operator Enable is a stab in the dark? Cheers, Florian

TX816 getting older
13
It still works. Mostly. Lately, I’ve noticed two of the TF-1 modules that don’t power up the same way everyone else does. Nor do they have that reassuring click of the relay. BUT, when you hit the function button up front, they join right in with the same display. Is this a relay thing? or one of the aging electrolytics nearby? Because unlike other synths, this thing is really hard to service on the bench, being detached from its host power and all. That, and schematics seem impossible to find. I’m secretly considering selling it, too. But that comes and goes. I hate to break up the ensemble of indulgent spending. :-) L.

Patch Purchasing from eBay
32
Has anybody purchased a patch / sound collection from eBay? One seller (SoundEngine.com) is selling 250K patches and I'm wondering if anybody has, and are you happy with the purchase? It's only $5. So, obviously not a bank breaker. The patches come in SysEx banks. Supposed to be a download and not a CD or any hard copy. I just don't want to end up with hours of wasted time.

TX802 - How do I save voice edits, from the front panel?
11
I just got a "new" TX802, and among other things decided to try tweaking patches from the front panel. All was (sort of) going well, until I tried to save one, and of course lost my edits, first time. So, I referred to the manual, which referred me to the page about storing voices with the Store / Compare button, rather than telling me how to do it from Voice Edit mode. The thing is, while editing a voice, the Store / Compare becomes the Compare button - letting you listen to the previous version of the patch. Pressing it a second time just returns you to edit mode. Pressing Voice Select instantly trashes my edits - but at least it does it consistently. Any clues? It seems the manual is useless, on this point. I'm surprised I haven't read about this before, along with comments about how relatively easy it is to edit it from the front panel. - Andy

MIDI interface for old PowerBook?
8
I have a G4 PowerBook that isn’t really being used, so I thought I would run Sysex Librarian on it (there are still old versions on the snooze.net website), to use with my DX7II. It’s pretty ancient though, with a PowerPC CPU, and is running Mac OS X 10.4. I’ve looked at a few MIDI interfaces, like the IK Multimedia iRig MIDI 2, and the M-Audio MIDISPORT 2x2. The iRig MIDI lists OS X 10.6 and later as compatible, the MIDISPORT does list OS X 10.4.9 as compatible. There’s also a mystery brand interface on Amazon (DigitalLife) for $60 I might take a chance on. Does anyone have some experience with MIDI interfaces and elderly versions of Mac OS X? Are the interfaces generally compatible, and the manufacturers just list recent versions of OS X to be safe? Or do the interfaces really have problems, or not work, with older versions of OS X? Thanks in advance for any advice.

TO ALL MEMBERS of YamahaDX
23
Dear subscribers, Although I'm personally not really involved in the ongoing matters here anymore I certainly don't want to lose this treasure-trove of information for all those ppl who live here. Therefore I've setup a [email protected] account and will export all the messages AND members over there. My time is scarce so I'll have to squeeze this in somewhere but I've understood that this process should work and then we're not reliant on Yahoo anymore :-) Wrt to the storage we have 1GB file space which should be enough for everything here and in YamahaDXFiles. The latter will not be moved to Groups.IO because it was only created due to the limited space we had initially in this group. The files will be moved one way or the other. I intend to keep the joint-staff of owner/moderators as it is now, as soon as I've figured out how to set it up. Another thing I don't know how it will work out is the login of all members. Apparently one can move all subscriptions too but as of now no clue going on from there... It should always be possible to subscribe to this new list. If it's done I'll notify this and close this group wrt posting/replying to messages (if possible). To a new life in Groups.IO ! rg,rg

Issue receiving sysex dump from DX7
30
Hi there and thanks for accepting me into this group. As a quick introduction of myself, I'm from Germany, I have a number of 80s and 90s Yamaha synths, a nice bit of other equipment and some, albeit limited, knowledge in electronics (more of a software developer). I recently bought a DX 7 Mk 1 - according to the chips' timestamp it's probably built in fall 1983. I have an issue with it where I am a bit stuck. When I try to dump the internal memory, no MIDI interface recognizes any data, but something is being sent. The setup I have for testing: DX7 Mk 1 - MIDI out to a MOTU MIDI Express No-Name USB-MIDI converter connected to the MOTU Behringer FCA1616 connected to the MOTU Process for dumping the memory (if I understood the manual correctly, there should not be an issue there): Switch on DX7 ... :-) FUNCTION - 8 (MIDI Channel 1) - 8 - YES (Sysinfo avail) - 8 - YES Then I can see that the MOTU receives and relays something (the appropriate LEDs are all on for a time). I can see on both MIDI interfaces (no-name cable and FCA1616) that something is coming in, BUT no software on a PC (including DX Manager) sees any usable data. It's the same if I plug the interfaces directly into the DX7 (the MOTU helps sometimes, my no-name cable for example has issues talking to a CS1x directly, but all is fine if the MOTU relays the data). The DX7 can receive sysex, so I can send patches to it. Controller messages come out of the DX7. When dumping the sysex, the interfaces recognize the controller message for the "+1 YES", but after that nothing. Another thing that makes me wonder if there is an issue with my DX7 is: when I switch it on, the MOTU registers a repeating signal coming in, but it is not relaying that (maybe the incoming is not strong enough?), but after having tried to dump sysex, this quick repeating signal is relayed (output LEDs start flickering). And yet another potential hint: when the MOTU relays incoming signals back to the DX7, I actually see some data which looks very much like a sysex dump, but only the FCA1616 recognizes this f**ed up data stream, a small snippet of the data is: F2 48 45 F2 41 56 F2 59 4D F2 45 54 F2 4C 32 F2 35 40 If you remove the "F2"s, you get the name of one of the stored voices "HEAVYMETAL25" So, something somehow is coming. Is it an issue you have seen? My only ideas are that either the sending rate is somehow wrong or the electrical level is not "strong enough", and the factual feedback when the MOTU sends all back to the DX7 barely raises the level above recognition? I mean, I'm purely guessing here, I also suspected the firmware, but according to https://narkive.com/7ucQVoto.10 the ability to dump a sysex is not known to be a problem of a firmware. Any sensible idea, anything I could try, would be most welcome. Maybe one more piece of potentially relevant info: when I pluck my TX7 into the same cables, all is well. In the end this is for me more of a purist problem, as I would like to have my synthesizers all work to spec. I'm not planning on programming voices on the DX7 itself, I use software editors for that, and as I can send the patches over... Anyway, I don't like broken hardware :-) Cheers, Florian

Patch Demo Page
Hi all, There are probably 100,000 Mark 1 DX7 patches out there, but far fewer of the DX7ii Performance banks. For the Mark II fans out there, I'm trying to make demos of both the classic (late 80's/early 90's) commercially available banks, as well as the solid homebrews out there. I hope you'll check it out and subscribe (link below)- I try and do one a week, it's a great excuse to play keyboard more often. Also doing a little series on attempts to ressurect/convert old 720K floppies and the like. Also thanks for the quick-thinking in moving the group over. -- Check out my DX7iiFD/D patch Demos!

Yamaha DX-1 Servicing
13
I recently started playing my Yamaha DX-1 as I've had it storage for some year. Not really sure if it could need calibrating so I was wondering if anyone has anyideas on how to tune up/calibrate a DX-1. I check the battery and it read from the keyboard display 4.7 volts. I've never changed it since the 18 or so years that I've had it. I also noticed that it has this sustain to most patches and I'm trying to figureout if there's a sustain mode somewhere on the keyboard where I can decrease that. Thanks for Any Suggestions. GAT

PayPal charges a fee only if it’s from or to to a PayPal business account. If its from and/or to a personal PayPal account, there’s no fee. A simple e-mail address that the web-master has linked to his personal PayPal account is all any of you need to send money via PayPal to his personal PayPal account! I wish I wasn’t a senior living on very tightly-fixed monthly income or I'd throw in something, but I’m just barely making ends meet each month as it is. Maybe this 2-cents worth is my sufficient contribution. Catch ya later. Bye for now. Dan.

Yahoo's email
4
Since the old group is shut down, I don't know if you folks got this email. (I received it from another group still in transition.) Apparently, Yahoo has sent this note to every member of every list. First of all, it's late: the first portion of the change already happened. Secondly, the spin doctor on this one must be getting dizzy by now! They're not taking Yahoo Groups away -- they're making it better, um ... by removing some of the most useful features of the lists (file storage, email archives). :-\ ________ Here is the text from the email: "Dear Group Moderators and Members, Thank you for your commitment to Yahoo and for helping us define the power of digital communities. Eighteen years ago, we combined the functionality of a site called eGroups.com with a precursor community platform called Yahoo Clubs to launch Yahoo Groups. Since then, you and millions of others have helped prove our hypothesis, by creating and joining more than 10 Million groups. A lot has changed about the Internet since 2001, including the ways most people now use Yahoo Groups. Today, most Yahoo Groups activity happens in your email inbox, not on the bulletin boards where Yahoo Groups started in the pre-smartphone age. Increasingly, people want content and connections coming directly to them, and this is why we continue to invest in Yahoo Mail -- including the recent launch of a new Yahoo Mail app that is currently the highest-rated email app in the App Store and Google Play. So, as our users’ habits have evolved, we have begun the process of evolving our approach to help active Yahoo Groups thrive and migrate to our email platform. To help you plan for these changes, below is the schedule of how this transition will happen. Beginning October 28, 2019: Users will be able to join a Yahoo Group only through an invite from the Group Moderator or by submitting a request to join a Group, which requires approval by the Group Moderator. Since we are moving Group communication from posting on message boards to email distribution, uploading and hosting of new content will also be disabled on the Yahoo Groups website. Beginning December 14, 2019: All Groups will be made private and any content that was previously uploaded via the website will be removed. We believe privacy is critical and made this decision to better align with our overall principles. If you would like to keep any of the content you’ve posted or stored in the past within your Yahoo Group, please download it by December 14 by accessing this link. As these dates get closer, we will send follow-up reminders. More information about the upcoming changes can be found here. While this evolution of Yahoo Groups is inspired by how we see the platform being used today, we know change can be difficult. Here are a few important facts as we make this transition: 1. Yahoo Groups is not going away - We know that our users are deeply passionate about connecting around shared interests, and we are evolving Groups to better align with how you use it today. 2. New groups can still be formed - Users can continue to connect with others around their common bonds and interests. From animal rescues to sporting and activity groups, civic organizations to local PTAs, members of our Yahoo Groups will remain connected and able to share their activities and interests. All of the content that you have shared previously on the website, can continue to be shared via email. We know that Yahoo Groups is an important online extension of your real-life group of friends, interests and communities, and we are committed to supporting communities that rely on Yahoo Groups. Thanks for coming along with us this far. We look forward to seeing where the technology -- and you -- take us in the decades to come. Sincerely, The Groups Team" -- Regards, -BW Bruce Wahler Ashby Solutions.com? bw@... http://music.ashbysolutions.com http://halfmoon-switch.com http://ashboys.com 978.597.7008
