TX802 - How do I save voice edits, from the front panel?

I just got a "new" TX802, and among other things decided to try tweaking patches from the front panel.

All was (sort of) going well, until I tried to save one, and of course lost my edits, first time.? So, I referred to the manual, which referred me to the page about storing voices with the Store / Compare button, rather than telling me how to do it from Voice Edit mode.

The thing is, while editing a voice, the Store / Compare becomes the Compare button - letting you listen to the previous version of the patch.? Pressing it a second time just returns you to edit mode.

Pressing Voice Select instantly trashes my edits - but at least it does it consistently.

Any clues?? It seems the manual is useless, on this point.? I'm surprised I haven't read about this before, along with comments about how relatively easy it is to edit it from the front panel.

Here's what I see on my two TX802s:

  • Pressing Voice Select shows the voices used in the current Performance.
  • Pressing Voice Edit I or II allows one to edit a voice.
  • Afterwards, pressing Voice select returns to the top-level Voices page.? If a voice has been modified, the selected voice will now have a lower-case index (ex: a23 vs A23).? Pressing Store/Compare at that point will allow one to save the voice selected (by the arrow) to the Internal (I) or Cartridge (C) bank -- if a cartridge is installed -- along with an "Are You Sure?" message.? After saving, the voice will have an upper-case index.
  • Banks A and B cannot be overwritten, as they are ROM based.? New sounds must be stored to Bank I or Bank C.

Are you seeing something different?

Thanks, Bruce.?

Yes, that works for me too? - now I know what to do.? I've been over and over that part of the manual, and it just doesn't explain how to save it, as far as I can see.? I've lost every attempt at editing, before knowing to do that.? It had taken on a bit of an unexploded bomb feeling.

I did find a bit about restoring the edit buffer, from the utility menu, but it didn't explain what would happen if I did - I fully expected to find myself back in the edit mode, still without any way to save it.? I didn't want to try doing that, because I'd left it in edit mode, rather than lose another attempt at altering a patch.

Now I've got a TX802 in front of me, the manual seems lightweight and woefully inadequate.? I've read manuals for other Yamaha FM synths I own, and never had that feeling before.

Somehow Yamaha expected that this expander would be used by experienced owner’s of DX7 II D, but still it’s different. Even detailed MIDI implementation was missing in the manual, I remember my reverse engineering of Sysex control (successful, how I could after many years when finally I have found a printed copy in Yamaha Europe HQ during one of my visits there). And DX7 II D manual was also not too informative, so later they published all those Supplemental booklets.

Hi Andy,

HTH.? To be fair, it was confusing the first time I tried to edit a voice, too. '80s Yamaha manuals are among the worst I've ever seen!

Good point, Daniel.? I was just thinking maybe I should read the DX7 II D manual, but I'd forgotten about the booklets.? I saved them when I saw them on the Yamahamusicians forum, but I'd forgotten all about them.

FWIW, I saw them here:

and also here (not sure why there's two threads) :

Yep.? Thanks again, Bruce.? I couldn't see any way past that problem.? It was really bothering me.

I'm now trying to rethink the ergonomics of using it.? I'd planned to just put it on a shelf, and edit it with SoundDiver, or maybe JSynthLib, but it seems to benefit from direct interaction with the screen and buttons... Also, I'm not sure SoundDiver actually works with it properly - unless it came with a lot of corrupted patches.? I tried SoundDiver a bit too early in the process to be sure.

JSynthLib seems more promising though.

I've been wondering if anyone wrote a remote control program for it - the buttons can be operated by sysex, and I've seen something that can do that for the VL70-m.? I guess I could try to make something in Ctrlr, but I only vaguely know how to do that.

It's definitely more fun than my TX7, anyway.

- Andy

That's been possible since the original DX7 but I've never seen it documented except for 3rd party web pages. Is this more common knowledge than I thought?

It's in the TX802-SYSEX.pdf document, somewhere in the Files section.

Look under:

1. Parameter Change

1.7 Remote Switch Parameter Change

and

Table? 4 - Remote Switch Parameter Change

(on page 8) - which gives the actual values to send for each button.

It was my idea to scan them few years ago, and publish it with approval from Yamaha, so I’m glad this project was successful. We did it together with another member Rawl. Recently only one or two booklets are missing, I’m still trying to get them. Somebody promised me to rent one of them for the scan but it has a big delay, don’t know why.?

Thanks for starting that off, Daniel.? I expect it will take me a while to read what's there already, so no rush on my account :)

I found a Ctrlr panel for the TX802.? Actually, I found it a while ago, while looking into getting one but forgot I had it.? I altered the layout a little to suit my smallish screen.

There are voice on/off buttons, which may have been working already, but they seemed a bit mysterious, and didn't send the sysex as it's shown in that document - so I've done them again to check it.? I've also added Performance Select and +1/-1 from the keypad.? Visually, it's a mess and I really don't know what I'm doing, but at least those now work.

I'm not sure how much of the Ctrlr panel is meant to be functional.? It might just be a work in progress; I'm not sure.?? I may just turn it into a full remote control, eventually.? I'll still need a periscope to see the LCD display, once it's on the shelf above me though. I tried a web cam but the lens angle isn't wide enough to take it all in from a reasonable distance (for a webcam on a stick, protruding from a shelf).? Early days...
