Looking for some insight and assistance here.? I picked up a Yamaha wireless bluetooth MD-BT01 Bluetooth Wireless MIDI Interface to use with my DX7.? My understanding is that the device can/could be used with an instrument that has midi in and out sockets.? It connects very easily of course, the IN to the midi IN and the OUT to the midi out on the keyboard.? The purpose of this was to see if I could modify some of the DX7 sounds with my Ipad.? I was able to download an app which allows the Ipad to recognize the Bluetooth device, but from there I'm lost.? Is there a particular midi channel on the keyboard that I need to use?? Or is this an exercise in futility in that the DX7 is just too old to be able to use this technology.....?

I do not think the DX7 is too old as MIDI is just a? protocol (although I heard MIDI2 is in the pipeline) . I would check the instructions of the Bluetooth device as nominally in MIDI, IN goes to OUT and vice versa,not IN to IN and OUT to OUT,it depends on the way the cable has been labelled. On the basic DAW set up diagram shown on this page,you can see IN going to OUT and OUT to IN. If you are experiencing no data,possibly the ca bles are in the wrong sockets.
One of the possible drawbacks of the MIDI spec is they did not make it impossible to get the cables back to front.

The setup video on the yamaha site doesn't really indicate which plug
goes in which socket - hopefully that is evident from the way the loop
of wire is between them,unless they are marked. I
doubt you should need an app to connect bluetooth - that's in SETTINGS
on the ipad,and Yamaha are referring to something called PIANO DIARY
which I presume is a music app,and to select the comms device within its
settings. To edit the sound parameters on the DX7 would need some sort of SYSx dumping software on the IPad and the instructions Grant just provided.

A couple of 'startup' questions and general comments --
- Does that iPad recognize that a BT MIDI device is connected??
If so, the MD-BT01 is probably plugged in correctly.? (From your
description, it sounds like this is the case.)
- Set the MIDI channel to CH1.? Do you have a program that can
monitor MIDI traffic?? Can you send/receive notes?? (On a PC, I
use MIDI OX; I'm not sure what/if the equivilent program on an
iPad is.)
- MIDI SysEx doesn't have a channel per se.? Devices send an F0
byte, the Manufacturer ID (either 1 or 3 bytes), and end with an
F7 byte.? In between the Manufacturer ID and the F7 can be a
string of bytes defined by the manufacturer, and may only work
with certain products.? There *may* be other tags such as the
Model ID and Device ID (number) to define compatibility or
direct traffice, but these aren't absolutely required to be a
SysEx message.? Some of the gritty details of SysEx were being
flushed out while DX7 was being released, so it wouldn't
surprise me if it cuts some corners in this respect.
- The biggest potential hurdle is connecting the BT MIDI to
editing software that supports the DX7.? Many older MIDI
editor/librarian programs only work (or work well) with specific
MIDI interfaces.? I doubt that something as comparatively
complex as Bluetooth MIDI was part of the discussion.

Unless you've seen instructions that say so, I wouldn't assume IN on the device goes to IN on the synth, in fact I'd assume the opposite, because that's how MIDI devices are normally labelled - IN normally means MIDI IN to this device, and OUT normally means MIDI OUT from this device.
I have an M-Audio Uno, which as built in MIDI leads labelled "To IN" and "To OUT", which still tends to confuse me because I don't always notice the "To" if I haven't used it for a while.

I have this adapter, too. It's powered by MIDI, and not every device provides this power (and if so, at the required voltage). Dave Smith's Evolver and Mopho don't, for instance. Does the adapter's LED start blinking when it's plugged in, and your DX is turned on? If not, you're probably SOL.?

I see this guy has posted a video on YouTube about connecting this so you might want to watch that to make sure it is connect correctly. Then I would test getting your DX7 to send notes to a software synth, when you get that working then I would work on transferring patches (sysex). Not all devices that handle MIDI connections can handle sysex transfers so you might want to see if Yamaha say it can do sysex. One suggestion is to use Dexed to transfer sounds to your DX7, it is a software synth that emulates a DX7 so you can audition the presets and it also works as a Librarian so you can transfer patches back and forth. Hope that helps.

I was a MIDI Solutions dealer for many years, and learned to deal
with this problem all the time.? The good news is that older MIDI
gear is more likely to work than newer gear -- at least, from a
hardware perspective.? The original (1982) MIDI spec shows suggested
In, Out, and Thru circuits, and they all run off 5V.? Over time,
electronics has moved to 3.3V and lower, making it harder to provide
enough voltage to provide "MIDI power" -- which does NOT actually
have a standard!
I would bet that the DX7 provides 5V power; my TX802 does.? If it
does not, then the other culprit is that the shell on the Out jack
must be tied to power ground.? Again, the 1982 spec shows Out and
Thru cables tied to ground, but In cables left floating.? 95-99% of
devices follow this convention, but I've seen a few that don't.?
Fortunately, it's an easy fix:? just solder a wire from Pin 3 (the
middle pin on the DIN jack) to the shell pins, or to PCB ground.

The problem is your first or second gen ipad. The DX is fine.? The interface is fine.? Your iPad doesn’t have the smarts to deal with BT and MIDI and if it’s 1st gen, as was mine, the opsys can’t be updated far enough. I know this because I went through the same thing a year or two back.? iPad running Korg suite. Was stuck running the midi-to-30pin adapter. It was my wife’s “old iPad” so I put it to good use.? But the gig wasn’t enough to shell out the clams for a newer one. ? L. ?

Looking for some insight and assistance here.? I picked up a Yamaha wireless bluetooth MD-BT01 Bluetooth Wireless MIDI Interface to use with my DX7.? My understanding is that the device can/could be used with an instrument that has midi in and out sockets.?
It connects very easily of course, the IN to the midi IN and the OUT to the midi out on the keyboard.? The purpose of this was to see if I could modify some of the DX7 sounds with my Ipad.? I was able to download an app which allows the Ipad to recognize the
Bluetooth device, but from there I'm lost.? Is there a particular midi channel on the keyboard that I need to use?? Or is this an exercise in futility in that the DX7 is just too old to be able to use this technology.....?

completely different. In the DX100 the rom starts with code and ends
with the voices, in the DX21 it's the other way round. Also the DX100
uses only 43 bytes per voice, so no simple direct comparison between

and HD6303XP in DX27S),only difference is the speed of the processors.

I have this adapter, too. It's powered by MIDI, and not every device provides this power (and if so, at the required voltage). Dave Smith's Evolver and Mopho don't, for instance. Does the adapter's LED start blinking when it's plugged in, and your DX is turned on? If not, you're probably SOL.?
