Hi Martin,

I have a question hope you can help...

I recently sold my Yamaha DX21, it had some custom patches programmed in
bank a2 9-16, b1 1-8 and b2 9-16 before I sold it, I hooked it up via MIDI
and used a program called MIDIOX to "bulk dump" the patches into a syx
(sysex file).? I then bought a Yamaha TX81Z, would it be possible to dump
the DX21 syx file into the TX81Z and play those custom patches.? Please
advise if not, would your program help to "convert or translate" that sysex
file so the TX81Z can read it.? Thanks for your help.
You don't need DXconvert for this. (DXconvert is for 6-op DX synths.)
TX81Z should load DX21 SysEx patchdumps without much problems. If you wish
you can use that MIDIOX program again to dump the SysEx to your TX81Z.
Make sure MIDI SysEx is enabled, the correct channel, memory protect off,
cables are connected correctly, things like that.

Note: Two important things will get lost. The TX81Z does not have a Chorus
effect, and the TX81Z does not have a Pitch Envelope Generator. These
parameters will be ignored, but the patches can still be used anyway.

DXconvert-1.1.5

Hi,

I made a minor change in DXconvert-1.1.5.
When converting a big library into separate 32-patch syx files, the outfiles are now numbered using zero-padding. For example:

python dxconvert.pyw VERYBIGFILE outfile.syx

would produce something like

outfile(001).syx ... outfile(099).syx ... outfile(999).syx

Now available in YamahaDXFiles/files section.

Which sounddiver lib ?

I very quickly tried some soundbanks, using DXconvert-1.1.5, and I can
see, play, and hear a lot of usable DX7 patches. Not all garbage at all!

But, as Renata says, there is indeed a LOT of them :-)

Hello :)

About 10 years ago a friend picked up a DX7 and the gentlemen who sold it also threw in a disc of files that were used in Michael Jackson's Thriller album as well as MJ's Bad Tour. The problem we have, now ten years removed, is i'm not sure what format these files are.

Could someone here please take a look at them to see what type of file extension or what work we need to do to be able to use them? Ideally we'd like to convert them into sysex so they can be imported into Native Instruments FM8.

Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

I've uploaded the files in a .ZIP archive here

I will analyze the files and see what I can do. I expect DXconvert-1.1.5 will be able to convert most of your files to DX7 sysex.
I have uploaded DXconvert-1.1.5.zip to the following locations:

NEW in version 1.1.5:
I have implemented a new simple and effective "--offset" commandline option. (Not available in the GUI version). I have found I can convert many, but not all, of the DX7 files in the collection uploaded by geminisolstice if I use --offset=2

python dxconvert.pyw --offset=2 INFILE OUTFILE.SYX

This seems to work with the files with a filesize of 4098, 4128, 6146 bytes.

This new option can be a simple workaround for files DXconvert does not recognize (yet).

Re: Controller assignment in DX7 family

Greg

Further to this.
1. I have confirmed with a user of the DX200 that it received Mono/Poly, PB & porta from ACED parameter change (3b.), but did not receive PLG150DX's XG controller-assign parameter changes (4b.) We tried the following but it didn't work:

F0 43 10 4C 07 02 00 0F F7 - assign PLG150DX part no. 16
F0 43 10 4C 08 0F 04 0n F7 - set part 16's receive channel to n+1
F0 43 10 4C 08 0F 20 00 F7 - turn part 16 mod-wheel pitch-mod off
F0 43 10 4C 08 0F 1E 60 F7 - turn part 16 mod-wheel filter up

So it seems DX200 users are stuck with mod-wheel pitch-mod & inoperative aftertouch.

2. The FS1R receives operator AM sensitivity and pitch-EG parameters from DX7 single-voice ACED bulk dump (3a.) sent before DX7 single-voice VCED bulk dump, but mono/poly, PB and porta are in FS1R performance part parameters and controller assign in FS1R performance common parameters.

3. The DX5 and DX1 receive TX7 performance data (2a., 2b., 2c.)

--- In YamahaDX@..., "Greg" <gholwell60@...> wrote:

1. This also affects Mono/Poly, pitch-bend range and portamento mode/time.

2. The DX200 manual says that the ACED controller-assign parameters (3a.) are not used but does not include the XG multi-part sysex (4.) used by the PLG150DX. Someone out there with a DX200 (which, according to another post, includes the PLG150DX board) may be able to confirm which of these work.

Among Yamaha's 6-operator FM synths I have found 4 different ways of assigning

controllers to various functions (e.g. pitch modulation depth for the mod wheel).

1. DX7 Mark I Function parameter changes (F0 43 1n 08)

2a. TX7/TX816 Performance bulk dump (F0 43 0n 01)
2b. TX7/TX816 Performance parameter changes (F0 43 1n 04)
2c. TX7/TX816 64-Performance bulk dump (F0 43 0n 02)
(These synths also receive 1.)

3a. DX7II/DX7S/TX802 ACED (single-voice supplement) bulk dump (F0 43 0n 05)
3b. DX7II/DX7S/TX802 ACED parameter changes (F0 43 1n 18)
3c. DX7II/DX7S/TX802 AMEM (32-voice supplement) bulk dump (F0 43 0n 06)

4a. PLG150DX XG multi-part bulk dump (F0 43 0n 4C LL LL 08 0p nn)
4b. PLG150DX XG parameter changes (F0 43 1n 4C 08 0p nn)
(These synths do not use the controller-assign parameters in 3a.)

The Java program in dx7param.zip in the Files section generates 1. before 2a./3a. so

the same bulk dump can be used for both DX7 Mark I (with channel changed by the Java

program in dx7chan.zip) and either DX7II or TX7.

For 4a./4b. use an XG editor such as:
XGC (free from www.midiox.com, base XG + DB50XG/SW60XG/MU10 2-element voice loader)
XG-Gold (base XG + QS300/DB50XG/SW60XG/MU10 4-element voice editor)
XG-Wizard (SW1000XG)
XGedit, XG-Pad (generic)
Note that filter modulation is inoperative here.

Sounds like a nice job for my DXconvert software. Many of the files seem to be DX7/TX816 patchbanks in a format even DXconvert does not recognize yet. Looks like I will have to add yet another file format to the many fileformats DXconvert already recognizes. I will analyze the files and see what I can do. I expect DXconvert-1.1.5 will be able to convert most of your files to DX7 sysex. Be patient, I don't have much time to work on it right now,

P.S: Your files clearly demonstrate that file extensions are a BAD way to identify files: most of the files in the zip have NO extension at all :-)

Re: Please help with mystery "Michael Jackson" DX7 files (No File Extension)

i looked at them too martain and i don't have any hand written software
which converts them either

i did see opcode in there and i think thats the mac software bank manager
for sys ex

anyhow its functions and voices in some and just single voices in others.
